Margit's Golden Root Turmeric Tea — Product Information
◇ ◆ ◇

Hand-Blended in a Small Apothecary on the Coast of Maine

Margit Halvorsen, 66. Whole turmeric root, true Ceylon cinnamon quills and whole dried ginger. Three ingredients, no powder, no fillers, no flavouring. Blended by hand in batches of no more than 40 boxes since 1998, from turmeric grown on the same family farm in Kerala for 28 consecutive years. Her shop closes at the end of this year.

Golden Root turmeric, cinnamon and ginger tea with whole root pieces and pyramid tea bags
The only three ingredients that ever go into a box: whole turmeric root, true Ceylon cinnamon quills, and whole dried ginger.

"I didn't design this blend for anyone else at first. I designed it for two problems of my own: hands that ached most mornings after years over a mixing bowl, and evenings I was too wired to switch off from. Thirty years later my regulars come back for the same two reasons."

Margit Halvorsen, Camden, Maine

Why People Reach For It

Six Reasons a Cup a Day Becomes a Habit

Margit has never sold this as a cure for anything, and she is the first to roll her eyes at that. What follows is simply what turmeric, cinnamon and ginger have long been used for, and why her regulars keep coming back.

◆ Inflammation

Curcumin, for the Body's Everyday Inflammatory Response

Turmeric's deep gold colour comes from curcumin, one of the most heavily researched natural compounds for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is studied for supporting the body's normal inflammatory response, which is why so many people reach for it after a long day on their feet or a hard session in the gym.

◆ Joints

For the Stiffness That Shows Up First Thing

The morning stiffness in the hands and knees is exactly the problem Margit built the blend around. Turmeric and ginger have both been traditionally used to support comfortable, mobile joints, and a warm cup is a gentler way into the day than waiting for the ache to pass on its own.

◆ Heart

Antioxidant Support for Heart and Circulation

Curcumin, gingerol and the polyphenols in true Ceylon cinnamon are all antioxidants, which help protect the body's cells against oxidative stress. Together they are traditionally taken as part of a routine that supports healthy circulation and normal cardiovascular function.

◆ Balance

Ceylon Cinnamon, Naturally Sweet Without the Sugar

True Ceylon cinnamon is rich in antioxidants and has long been used to help support blood sugar levels already within a normal range. It also gives the cup its natural sweetness and warmth, so nothing needs to be added, which is a small thing that matters if you are watching what you put in your tea.

◆ Calm

For a Calmer Response to a Demanding Day

Curcumin and ginger have both been studied for their role in the body's stress response, including helping keep cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, within a normal healthy range under everyday physical and mental strain. It is why Margit brews a cup at the end of a hard day, not only at the start of one.

◆ Digestion

Ginger, for Digestion and Warmth

Whole dried ginger has been used for centuries to settle occasional stomach upset and queasiness and to support healthy digestion after a heavy meal. It is naturally warming too, which is why her regulars on the Maine coast reach for it on cold mornings and at the first hint of a cold.

◆ Maker's Note

"Most people in the West are drinking the least interesting part of the plant. The moment turmeric is ground into powder it starts losing potency to light and air, and most boxes sit on a shelf for a year before anyone opens them. By then you are steeping coloured dust, not spice. I have never once let this blend leave my hands to be mixed by a machine. A machine does not notice when the ratio is off by a single gram. I do."

Margit Halvorsen · 28 years of the Golden Root blend, nearly 9,000 kilos of turmeric · Camden, Maine

When To Drink It

Made For These Moments in the Day

First Thing in the Morning Stiff Hands & Knees After a Heavy Meal After Training Winding Down in the Evening Instead of the Third Coffee Cold Mornings A Gift That Gets Used

Quality Promise

Five Things You Get With Every Box

Whole Root, Never Powder Cut a bag open and you will find actual pieces of turmeric root, cinnamon bark and dried ginger. Powder loses potency to light and air from the moment it is ground. Whole pieces hold their oils for years.
True Ceylon Cinnamon, Not Cassia Almost everything labelled cinnamon on a supermarket shelf is cassia: cheaper, sharper and far higher in coumarin. Margit uses true Ceylon quills only, the way she was taught in Kerala.
Pyramid Mesh Bags, Not Flat Paper A flat paper bag barely lets water past the surface. The pieces need room to move and swell to release themselves properly into the cup. That is the whole reason pyramid bags exist, and the reason most brands still avoid the cost.
One Farm, 28 Consecutive Years The turmeric comes from the same family farm in Kerala that taught Margit to dry and grade root in her twenties, dried and hand-cut before it ever reaches Maine.
Final Hand-Packed Batches, No Restock Never more than 40 boxes mixed at a time, all of it by hand. What is left is the last of it. The shop closes at the end of this year and the recipe retires with Margit.

100% Money-Back Guarantee

Brew a cup and judge it for yourself. If the Golden Root blend isn't the best turmeric tea you have had, send it back for a full refund. No questions asked and no hard feelings. Margit would rather you be honest than stuck with a box you don't reach for.

◆ A Note From the Apothecary

Every batch is weighed and mixed by hand, so the colour and the strength of the cup vary slightly from one batch to the next depending on the harvest. That is a natural part of working with whole root rather than standardised powder, and it is the point rather than a fault. Golden Root is a herbal tea, not a medicine, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant or nursing, taking medication, or living with a health condition, speak to your doctor before adding a new herbal tea to your routine.

The Final 49

Message from the porch:

After forty-five summers on the east porch of the house her late husband Frank built on Ocracoke Island, Ellie Hartwell’s doctor was clear: the arthritis in her right hand has ended the fine appliqué work for good. Every bag was crocheted with the same two olive-wood hooks Frank brought back from Florence in 1979 — and every motif is a summer from Ellie’s own life. The turtle morning of 2004. Her daughter’s porch wedding in 1998. Frank’s last swim in 2010.

These 49 bags are the last ones her hands will ever crochet. Each ships with a parchment-wrapped keepsake from her Mason jar — a shell, a sand-dollar fragment, or a sliver of driftwood from 45 summers of beachcombing.

When they’re gone, they’re gone — and the porch goes quiet.

This is the cup that tells mynervous system the day is over 🌙I used to sit up buzzing until midnight after work. Now the kettle goes on at nine and actually come down. No caffeine in it so it doesn't work against you.

Three weeks in. I'm not going to claim miracles but I feel better in the mornings than I did, my digestion is happier, and I'm drinking less coffee. That's three things for one cup a day, I'll take it ☕️

Karen Pruitt, Surf City, NC

I've bought turmeric tea from every health shop in the city and they all taste like drinking dirt. This one actually tastes good, which means I actually drink it, which is the whole point.

How is each Hartwell bag made?

Every bag is hand-crocheted by Ellie Hartwell on the east porch of the house her late husband Frank built on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, in 1981 — three blocks back from the Pamlico Sound. The cotton-polyester yarn comes from a small Wilmington mill that closed in 2020; Ellie bought the final stock. Every stitch is made with one of the two olive-wood crochet hooks Frank brought back from Florence in May 1979. Each 3D motif — the loggerhead turtle, the wild daisies, the palm trees, the sun and waves, the starfish and shell — is crocheted free-hand, four to seven hours per appliqué, and traces back to one specific summer of Ellie’s life. Each bag ships with a parchment-wrapped keepsake from her Mason jar of 45 summers of beach finds.

No patterns. No two alike. No fiftieth bag.
