Her name is Gertie, and every six weeks Lorraine changed her outfit, and people on Main Street in Ephrata set their calendar by it. She was never once out there bare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n  \u003cp class=\"pgp-p\"\u003eLorraine taught home economics for eighteen years before she opened the shop. She started sewing goose dresses because her mother kept one on the porch — and when her mother died in 1994, the goose came home with her, and it was February, and the bird had nothing on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n  \u003ch2 class=\"pgp-h2\"\u003eWhat she actually makes\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n  \u003cp class=\"pgp-p\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eShe doesn't make the geese.\u003c\/strong\u003e The birds come in on a pallet, the same as everybody else's, and they always have. What is hers is the pattern, the fabric, the cutting and the sewing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n  \u003cp class=\"pgp-p\"\u003eEvery bolt gets washed twice before she cuts it, so the colours don't bleed and the seams don't draw up. Every hem is double-turned — folded twice, then stitched — so there's no raw edge anywhere to fray. There's elastic at the neckline, which she learned the hard way in 1998, when a dress she'd spent four hours on went over a neighbour's fence and was never seen again. And the wing openings sit slightly forward of where you'd think to put them, because cut where they look right on the table, the dress hangs crooked on the bird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n  \u003ch2 class=\"pgp-h2\"\u003eWhy this is the last one\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n  \u003cp class=\"pgp-p\"\u003eThe building sold in March.
