🌳

Cut by hand from a 212-year-old Herefordshire oak, after the February gale brought it down

Alwyn Prothero, seventy-six, Kington, Herefordshire. Forty-four years at the head saw and fifty-three years married to the woman who kept a light in his window. His hands are finished, and 212 bases are all that is left.

β€œA broker from London offered to take every board by the cubic foot, cash, one appointment. It would have ended up as nine-hundred-pound lamps in hotel lobbies, and nobody would ever have been told where it came from. Beryl kept a light in our kitchen window for fifty-three years. That oak isn’t leaving here by the cubic foot.”

β€” Alwyn Prothero, retired sawyer, Kington, Herefordshire

What arrives
🌳
The Lantern
Glass shade with a branching tree inside, on a hand-numbered English oak base.
πŸ“œ
Ring Card
Names the year your ring grew, out of the 212 Alwyn counted on the stump.
πŸ”‹
Cordless Light
Battery-operated. No socket, no cable. Any windowsill, any bedside table.
🎁
Gift Box
Most of these end up in someone else’s window.
Four things that make this lantern impossible to copy
πŸ”’
The Ring Number
Every base is hand-numbered on the underside, one through 212 β€” one for each ring Alwyn counted on the stump. The card names the year your ring grew, starting with 1812. No other lantern comes with a birth year.
πŸͺ΅
The Heart Cut
Only the heartwood is used β€” the dark, dense centre of the trunk, where the rings sit tightest and the grain runs unbroken from edge to edge. Most of a fallen oak never becomes a base.
🌲
The Marches Finish
Sanded by hand and rubbed with oil. No stain, no lacquer, nothing sprayed on. That is why the silver grain still shimmers when the light moves, and why the box smells like oak when you open it.
πŸ”
The Kitchen-Table Test
Don’t take anyone’s word for it. Turn the base over and count the rings, feel how heavy it is for its size, hold it to your nose. Real old oak smells of vanilla and tannin. A moulded copy has no rings, no weight and no smell.
Checked by a forester

β€œThree things tell you what you’ve got: the ring count, the weight and the smell. A moulded base can fake the look of one of them. Nobody fakes all three. And an oak that size and that age, standing alone on a ridge above Kington β€” most foresters go a whole career without seeing one come down. What is on that man’s shelves is the last of it. There is no second tree to go and get.”

β€” Gareth Lyne, retired forester, Welsh Marches woodlands

Who this is for
πŸͺŸ Anyone who leaves a light on for someone πŸ’ Daughters buying for their mothers 🀍 Someone facing the evenings alone 🌲 People who miss the woods πŸͺ΅ Woodworkers and wood people πŸ› Bedside tables, windowsills and reading corners 🎁 Mother’s Day, birthdays and housewarmings 🏑 Herefordshire and Marches locals
What you are actually getting
  • Real Herefordshire oak, not a print. A hand-sanded, oiled base cut from one 212-year-old tree β€” with a kitchen-table test anyone can run in about ten seconds.
  • Yours exists once. The rings, the figure and the silver grain never repeat, so no two bases are the same.
  • A documented year. A hand-numbered base and a card naming the year your ring grew β€” not a generic authenticity slip.
  • No cable, no socket. Battery-operated, so it sits on a windowsill, a bedside table or a bookshelf β€” wherever somebody should see a light.
  • Small on purpose. About 9.5 centimetres tall, made for a windowsill or a bedside table, not a table lamp. Heartwood from a single trunk only goes so far, and Alwyn wanted it to reach 212 homes.
  • 212 exist and there is no restock. The oak came down in February 2024, and Alwyn is out of the workshop on 30 November. After that the rest are posted from Hereford, while stock lasts.
πŸ›‘
30 days, no questions

If it doesn’t make you switch off the big light the first night, send it back within 30 days and get your money back. In forty-four years at the mill, nobody ever sent a board of Alwyn’s back.

Please read before ordering

Every base is cut from a different part of the same trunk. Ring width, colour and silver grain vary from lantern to lantern β€” the photographs show examples, not the exact base you will receive. That variation is the wood, not a defect.

The lantern is small: about 9.5 cm tall and 7 cm wide. It is a windowsill and bedside light, not a room lamp. We would rather say so here than have anyone surprised when the box arrives.

The Final Sale

Message from Alwyn:

The workshop above Kington closes on 30 November. Two hundred and twelve lanterns is everything that is left of the oak my wife watched from the kitchen window for fifty-three years. Every base was cut, sanded and numbered by hand, on the nights I could not sleep. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced.

When they are gone, they are gone β€” and so is the workshop. There is no second oak.

I put it on the kitchen windowsill the night it came and I've not moved it since. My husband always left the porch light on for me, so I'll admit the story got me. Lovely and solid, proper wood on the bottom, not plastic. It goes on every evening now and the kitchen feels a lot less empty.

Bought two, one for Mum and one for me because I couldn't stop looking at it. Colours are exactly like the photos and that green is gorgeous with the big light off. Looks just right on the side table. Arrived really well packed, glass in one piece.

Fifty years making things in my garage, so I bought it expecting to be disappointed and wasn't. The base is real timber with proper weight to it, oiled and nothing sprayed on. The number underneath and the little card with the year is a nice touch. At Β£49 it's fair value, I couldn't make one for that.

Got it for the wife's birthday and it's ended up being my favourite thing in the front room. Runs on batteries so there are no wires trailing down the fireplace, which was the main reason I went for it. Only gripe is she won't let me move it off the mantelpiece.

We live in an old stone cottage with deep windows and it looks like it was made for that sill. I leave it on when I go out so there's a light in the window when I come back up the lane. It smelled of oak when I opened the box, wasn't expecting that.

Not bright enough to read by, and that's not what it's for. It's the perfect glow to wind down with once the big light is off. I was worried the glass would feel cheap but it's thick and the rim is neatly finished. Already sent one to my sister in Cardiff.
