“When I was seven, I sat on my grandmother’s rug and looked up at her garland for hours. I’ve spent 39 Christmases trying to make every one look the way hers did. These are the last ones my hands can make.”
– Annis Rawcliffe (73), Ledbury, Herefordshire

What makes it Annis’s
NO. 01
Three tiers, like a real fir
Each little tree is built in three layered tiers. Every tier ends in a soft scalloped edge, so the trees look like branches heavy with snow – not like flat cut-outs.
NO. 02
Beads set one by one
About 130 small beads run along the scalloped edges. Annis sets them by hand, one by one. In the evening, when the lights are on, they sparkle like frost.
NO. 03
Two deer with gentle faces
The deer stand between the trees, each with a little wreath of greenery, tiny pinecones and a silver bead around the neck. Every face is painted by Annis – no two look exactly alike.
NO. 04
Light from the inside
Tiny warm-white lights sit inside all three trees and run on batteries. No cord, no plug socket, no candle near the greenery – just a soft glow that makes a room feel calmer.
NO. 05
Stars, beads and rope
Five silver stars, wooden beads, pine sprigs and pinecones are knotted onto natural jute so the garland hangs evenly across a mantelpiece or along a railing.
NO. 06
Made to come back every year
Unpack it in December, pack it away in January. Annis’s first customers have hung the same garland for more than thirty Christmases.
How to hang it
Choose your spot: a mantelpiece, a staircase railing, a bookshelf, a doorway or the top of a window frame. You don’t need a plug socket nearby.
Fasten both ends of the jute rope – tied around a railing, or over two small hooks or nails. Let the middle hang in a gentle curve.
Straighten the trees and deer so they face forward, and space the stars evenly between them.
Switch on the lights in the evening and turn off the lamps. That’s the moment Annis’s customers write to her about.
A mass-made garland vs. Annis’s
| Mass-made garland | Annis’s garland | |
|---|---|---|
| Made | On a production line, by the thousand | One at a time in a hop kiln in Ledbury |
| Trees | Flat, single-layer shapes | Three layered tiers with scalloped edges |
| Edges | Printed or plain | About 130 beads set by hand |
| Deer | Identical, often plain | Faces painted by hand, each with a little wreath |
| Light | Often none – or a candle next to it | Warm-white, battery-powered lights inside the trees |
| After Christmas | Ends up in the bin | Packed away and handed down |
Made by hand in Ledbury, Herefordshire
Behind Annis Rawcliffe’s cottage stands an old brick hop kiln. For 39 autumns it has smelled of pine and tea, with tins of beads on the windowsill and freshly painted deer drying on a cooling rack. Every garland she sold went from that table to one small stall at the Christmas market in town – never online, never in a shop.
This year, arthritis in her hands has made the finest work impossible, and her doctor has told her to stop. One last batch of 260 garlands, half-finished in different stages, was still in the hop kiln. Annis finished them slowly, with her granddaughter Elodie (26), who now sends them out – the first and the last time anyone outside Herefordshire can buy one.
Thank you for giving one of my last garlands a home. – Annis

Questions people ask Elodie
Does it need a plug socket?
No. The lights inside the three trees run on batteries, so you can hang the garland wherever it looks best.
How long is it?
The jute rope measures 120 cm (47 inches). Hung in a gentle curve, it fits most mantelpieces and many staircases and window frames.
Can I hang it outside?
Annis makes it for indoors – over the mantelpiece, along the stairs, across a window or a bookshelf. Keep it out of rain and snow.
Can I order more than one?
Yes, as long as the last batch lasts. Many customers order one for themselves and one for their mother or daughter.
Will there be more after this batch?
No. These are the last garlands Annis will make. When the 143 left are gone, there will be no more.
Annis’s 90-day money-back guarantee
Try it risk-free. Hang the garland, switch on the lights and live with it for a while. If it doesn’t win you over, send it back within 90 days and get your money back – no questions asked. Every order is dispatched within 1–2 working days.
Care & use
For indoor use only. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or cloth – never wet. Switch the lights off when you leave the house or go to bed, and take the batteries out before you pack the garland away. Store it loosely coiled in its box in a dry place, so the trees and deer keep their shape for next December. Keep it away from open flames and heaters.

The Final Sale
The Final Sale
A message from Annis:
For 39 Christmases I sold my garlands at one small stall at the Christmas market in Ledbury. Arthritis has made the beading too hard for my hands, and my doctor has told me to stop. These are the last garlands I will ever make – shaped, painted and beaded one at a time in the old hop kiln behind my cottage.
My granddaughter Elodie will keep posting them after I close the hop kiln at the end of November, until the very last one has gone.
When they're gone, they're gone.

What Annis's customers are saying
Had to take a photo with it the first evening. Hung it along the mantelpiece, switched the lamps off and the three little trees just glowed. My daughter thought I'd found it in some posh boutique.

It runs along our banister now and the grandchildren take turns switching the lights on before bed. The deer have the sweetest little faces. You can tell someone painted them by hand.

Bought it for myself, no apologies. When the trees are on, the beads along the edges catch the light like frost. It hangs across the top of my Welsh dresser and there's no flex trailing down the side, which is why I never had lights up there before.

We hung it across the top of the kitchen window. Coming up the path in the dark you can see the three little trees glowing. Two neighbours have already asked where it's from.

Mum bought one of Annis's garlands at the Ledbury market years ago, so I knew what I was getting. This one is just as lovely. It arrived well packed, every deer and star in one piece.

Pauline W., Gloucester
The wife made me pose with it, so here I am. Put it up along the beam over the fireplace myself. Two little hooks, five minutes. I'll admit the glow in the evening is rather nice.
