Ardith's Berry Washing Bowl
Made by Hand in Suttons Bay, Michigan
Ardith Vanderzee, 69, spent 34 years on the wash lines of a cherry packing plant. She made this bowl for her granddaughter. These are the last bowls from this fall’s firing. The next one won’t be before spring.
People think fruit comes out of the field clean. It doesn’t. It comes out of a field.

What arrives at your door
Why the berries come out clean and whole
Water comes in low through the spout, follows the curved wall and starts circling on its own. The berries turn in it, so every side gets rinsed.
No hard stream hitting the fruit and no rubbing. The water does the moving, so soft berries keep their shape.
Loose dirt, leaves and little bugs go out with the water through the holes around the cone. The berries stay in the bowl.
Ardith sets every spout low and angled along the wall, and tests every bowl under the tap before it ships.
Sized for one serving. Wash only what you’re about to eat, so the rest of the box stays dry in the fridge.
It drains on its own and goes straight to the table as a serving bowl. Each glaze is dipped by hand.

A quick rinse or Ardith’s bowl?
| Rinse under the tap | Ardith’s bowl | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | ✗ Hits the top berries, runs straight out | ✓ Circles around the whole handful |
| Soft fruit | ✗ Raspberries get crushed | ✓ Berries ride in water and stay whole |
| Your hands | ✗ Shaking, turning, rubbing | ✓ Hands-free, just turn on the tap |
| Dirt & bugs | ✗ Often stay on the bottom berries | ✓ Go out with the water |
| Afterwards | ✗ Wet box back in the fridge | ✓ Drains, goes straight to the table |
| Material | ✗ Plastic box or colander | ✓ Hand-glazed ceramic |
“Most fresh berries are packed right in the field, without being washed. The best thing you can do at home is rinse them gently under cool running water just before you eat them, and only as many as you need. Washing the whole container ahead of time adds moisture, and that speeds up mold.”

Ardith’s checklist
- Real ceramic: thrown on the wheel and high-fired. Not plastic, won’t warp.
- Hand-set spout: low and angled, so the water circles.
- Pierced cone: water drains, berries stay in.
- One-serving size: wash only what you’ll eat.
- Tested: every bowl runs under the studio tap before it’s wrapped.
90-Day “It Has to Swirl at Your Sink” Guarantee
If it doesn’t work at your tap, or you just don’t love it, send us a short email within 90 days and you get your money back.
Good to know: The bowl is about 5.1 inches across and holds one good handful at a time. It needs a steady stream of cold water into the spout. A very weak trickle won’t get the water circling. Rinsing with water helps remove loose dirt, leaves and insects. It does not remove residues inside the fruit. Every glaze is dipped by hand, so color and shape vary a little from bowl to bowl.

The Fall Firing
The Fall Firing
A note from the studio:
Ardith Vanderzee worked the wash and flume lines at a cherry packing plant outside Traverse City, Michigan, for 34 years. She learned there that fruit is moved in water, not blasted with it, and that most berries are packed in the field without ever being washed. When her granddaughter Hattie started eating berries straight from the box, Ardith threw a small bowl in her pole-barn studio and set a spout on it, so the tap water would circle the way it did in the plant. The bowls sold at the Saturday market in Suttons Bay for two summers. The market is closed until May, and the bowls left from the September firing are all there is until spring.

What people say about Ardith’s berry bowls
My two year old would live on blueberries if I let her. She stands on her stool and watches them go round and round, then eats them right out of the bowl. I thought it might be a gimmick but there was actual grit in the bottom the first time. Glad I got it.

Bought it for my wife and I end up using it more than she does. It is heavy, real pottery, not one of those plastic things. Strawberries in, cold water on, done. The cobalt looks even better in person.

Dale R., Mansfield, OH
Smaller than I expected, so check the size before you order. It takes one big handful at a time, which suits me fine since I only wash what I am about to eat. Raspberries come out whole every single time. Ordering two more for my sisters for Christmas.

I was the guy in the comments saying these waste water. It is about half a minute of cold water for a bowl of berries, less than I used to run the colander. Now my kids fight over who gets to wash the fruit, so I call that a win.

Did a box of store raspberries this morning and there was a little leaf and some sand left in the bowl when they came out. Those were supposedly ready to eat. Works fine on our regular kitchen faucet.

Came wrapped really well and got here faster than I expected. The blue glaze looks just like the photos, maybe prettier. It sits on the table with fruit in it most days, so it does not feel like one more gadget in a drawer.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Ardith throws each bowl on the wheel herself, then shapes the spout and sets it by hand, low and angled along the wall, so the water catches and circles instead of pouring straight through. After the first firing she dips each bowl in one of four glazes and fires it again. Before it is wrapped, Ardith runs every bowl under the studio tap to make sure the water swirls. No two are identical.
