The part of the Christmas tree farm that stays

Bernadette Tibbs, 74, has poured candles on her family’s Fraser fir farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, every fall since 1985. Arthritis won’t let her hold the wax pot steady anymore. These are her last 87.

“Daddy sold trees that went to the curb on January 2nd. I wanted to make the part of the farm that stays. I want it on the tables of folks who will never make it up this mountain.”

Bernadette Tibbs · Tibbs Ridge, Ashe County, North Carolina

What 40 winters taught Bernadette about a candle

🌲The Four-Tier Shear

The tiered tree has four layers, just like a Fraser fir trimmed by hand each July. The ridges catch the light, lit or not.

🌿The Slow-Burn Soy

Soy wax instead of paraffin. It burns calmer and slower and doesn’t leave a black ring on the wall.

⏳The Two-Day Cure

Every candle rests 48 hours before it is trimmed and packed. “Rush it and the scent never settles.”

🔔The Keepsake Tag

A string, a small tag and a little bell. “Half my customers never light them. They hang the tag on the tree.”

🐄Shapes From the Farm

Every shape is something Bernadette sees from her window: the firs, a seedling, the old pine’s cones and Thistle, the Highland cow.

🪟Made for Small Places

Sized for a windowsill, a mantel, a nightstand or the middle of the dinner table. Group a few for a little forest.

“North Carolina’s Fraser firs go to homes in every state, but most families only get to keep a tree for a few weeks. A candle shaped like the farm is a lovely way to bring a piece of it home for longer. Soy wax burns cooler and cleaner than paraffin, which makes it a good choice for small decorative candles that sit close to people at the table.”

Why folks keep coming back every December

  • Soy wax. A calm, clean flame with no black soot.
  • Fine detail. Ridges, scales and a shaggy fringe you can feel.
  • Cured 48 hours. So the scent settles before it ships.
  • Pretty unlit. Looks like Christmas even with the match still in the box.
  • Small and easy to place. Fits anywhere a coffee mug fits.
❤️ 30-day money-back guarantee

If it doesn’t earn a spot in your home, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Bernadette would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.

Good to know: These are small decorative candles, about 2½ to 3½ inches tall, not large pillar candles. Set them on a heat-safe plate, keep them away from drafts, the tree and curtains, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Every candle is poured one at a time, so tiny marks in the wax are normal.

The Last Batch

A note from the candle room:

Bernadette Tibbs grew up on her family’s Fraser fir farm in Ashe County, North Carolina. In 1985 her father told her a Christmas tree only lives in a house for three weeks — so she started pouring candles in the shapes of the farm, the part that stays. About 41,000 of them have gone home with families since then: the tiered Fraser fir, the spiral tree, the little seedling, the pinecone from the old pine by the barn and Thistle, the Highland cow who grazes between the rows. Arthritis in both hands won’t let her hold the hot wax pot steady anymore. This fall was the last batch. Only 87 candles are left across all five shapes. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?

Bernadette melts soy wax in an old enamel pot and pours every candle by hand into a small mould. Each one rests 48 hours so the scent can settle, then she trims it, ties on a string, a little tag and a bell, and packs it. Every shape comes from her farm: the Fraser fir, the spiral tree, the seedling, the pinecone and Thistle the Highland cow. Small marks in the wax from piece to piece are part of it.
