Birdie's Ear-Warming Reindeer Dog Hat
Hand-knit for the dogs of Duluth since 1987
Birdie Brannock, 72, has groomed dogs six blocks from Lake Superior for 39 years. Every winter she knit reindeer hats for her regulars — about 2,400 so far. Arthritis in both thumbs has ended the antler work. These are her last 212 hats.
“I don’t want them in a drawer. I want every one of them on a dog. On a cold walk. In a family photo in front of a tree.”
Birdie Brannock · Duluth, Minnesota
What comes in the box
Brown ribbed knit, pulls on over the head
Crocheted tight so they stand up
With pink insides
From Chihuahua to Husky
What makes Birdie’s reindeer hat different
One piece of stretchy knit covers the ears, the back of the head and the neck. No straps, no buckles, nothing for the wind to get under.
Antlers and ears are crocheted tight, so they stand up instead of drooping. The part everyone takes pictures of.
Three sizes based on one number: the head, measured at the widest part in front of the ears. Between two sizes? Take the bigger one.
No wool and no animal fibers. Soft, stretchy and gentle on sensitive skin. Snow shakes right off.
If your dog doesn’t want the ears covered, roll it down. Then it’s a warm neck scarf.
For 39 years, families have taken their Christmas photo in Birdie’s hats. Now it’s your dog’s turn.
“Short-coated dogs, older dogs and small breeds lose a lot of heat through their ears and neck on winter walks. A snug knit snood that covers both, without straps under the chin, is one of the simplest things an owner can do. Most dogs accept a soft, stretchy snood much faster than a stiff hat. Getting the size right by measuring the head is the key, and that’s exactly how these are sized.”

Why Birdie’s hats stay on and stay warm
- One-piece pull-on knit. Nothing to buckle, nothing to slip off.
- Sized by head, not by weight. The way a groomer measures.
- Antlers that stand. Tight crochet, not floppy felt.
- No wool. Gentle on sensitive skin, no itching.
- Made to be worn. On every snowy walk, not just on Christmas morning.
If it doesn’t fit or your dog won’t wear it, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Birdie would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.
Good to know: Please measure your dog’s head at the widest part, just in front of the ears, before you order. If you’re between two sizes, choose the bigger one. Some dogs need a minute to get used to having their ears covered — it can also be worn rolled down as a scarf.

A note from the shop:
Birdie Brannock has groomed dogs in Duluth, Minnesota, six blocks from Lake Superior, since 1987. That first winter she knit an ear warmer for an old Lab named Moose who was shivering on his morning walks. The next year it got antlers. Since then, about 2,400 dogs have worn her reindeer hats, and their photos cover a whole wall of her shop. Arthritis in both thumbs no longer lets her crochet the tight little antlers. 212 hats are left from her last batch. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?
How is it made?
The hat is knit in soft, stretchy ribbed yarn without wool, so it doesn’t itch. The antlers and ears are crocheted separately, pulled tight so they stand up, and sewn on by hand. It pulls over the head and covers the ears and neck — no straps, no buckles. Small differences from hat to hat are part of it.
