Clem's Soft-Ringing Copper Wind Chime
Hand-tuned in a 1911 tin shed on South Australiaās Copper Coast
Clem Pascoe, 74, is a fifth-generation coppersmith from Moonta. He tunes every copper chime by ear against his late motherās tuning fork. His right hand is slowly closing up, and he can no longer tune new ones. These are his last.
āMost wind chimes from the big shops donāt ring. They just rattle. I made these to be out in the wind, ringing every evening on somebodyās veranda.ā
Clem Pascoe Ā· Moonta, South Australia

Two voices with every breeze
A note from Clem in every box
What makes Clemās chime ring, not rattle
Four tubes, four notes that belong together. When the wind moves them, you hear a soft chord, not a clatter.
Copper is heavier and softer than aluminium. The sound is deeper and rounder, like a church organ from down the street.
No paint to peel off. The copper slowly darkens in sun and sea air and looks better every year.
Every chime hangs one night in Clemās pepper tree before it is packed. If it sounds wrong, it goes back on the bench.
Clem checks every tube against the tuning fork his mother, a church organist, gave him in 1966.
Solid copper that handles heat, salt air and a strong southerly without fading or rusting.
āMost cheap chimes have tubes cut to random lengths, so the notes clash. A tuned set is a different thing altogether. Copper gives a warmer, softer tone than aluminium, the kind of sound you can listen to all evening without it getting on your nerves.ā

Why Clemās chime lasts
- Solid copper. No thin, painted tubes that peel after one summer.
- Tuned, not just cut. Every tube is checked by ear before it is hung.
- Tested outdoors. A full night in the wind before it is packed.
- Strong hanging ring. Holds firm through gusty afternoons.
- No power needed. Just hang it up and let the wind do the rest.
Hang it up and listen for 30 days. If it isnāt the sound you hoped for, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Clem would rather have it back than see it sit in a drawer.
Tip from Clem: Hang it where the breeze can reach it but the tubes can swing freely, at least a handās width from a wall or post. The copper will slowly darken outdoors. That is the patina, not damage, and it is part of the charm.
