Hand-Torched at the Foot of the Smokies

Dewey Caudill, sixty-seven — two generations of fence-builders before him, and forty years building things for his neighbors' yards before he ever built one for the squirrels. His father raised barns and mended fence line. Dewey just started torching the boards instead of painting them.

“I quit trying to keep them out of everything. Now I just give ‘em someplace better to be, and let them sort out the rest.”

What It Does for Your Yard

🐦
Your bird feeder stops being their only option

A squirrel doesn't raid your feeder out of spite — it just goes wherever the food already is. Give it a stocked spot of its own, and a lot of that traffic moves over on its own. It won't end every visit; nothing reliably does.

🍅
Your tomatoes get left alone

Squirrels don't nibble a tomato where it hangs — they carry the whole thing off and leave a chewed scrap behind. Give them an easier meal a few feet away, stocked and ready, and a lot of that traffic has somewhere better to go.

🌻
Your flower beds stop getting dug up

Tulip bulbs and crocus corms aren't in the way by accident — they're genuine squirrel food, right alongside acorns. A stocked house nearby won't stop a determined squirrel, but it's a much easier meal than digging through your beds for one.

👀
You actually get to watch them

A handful of peanuts on the fence rail is grab-and-run. A house with a ladder to climb turns a quick snack into something worth watching from the kitchen window.

What Arrives at Your Door

🏠 The House Gable roof, hand-torched pine
🪜 The Ladder 30in rope, wooden rungs
🪵 The Perch Railed platform for two
📋 Placement Card Where to hang, what to fill it with

Why This One Actually Gets Used

🔥 The Torched Finish

Every board is held over open flame the way Dewey's father taught him — no paint, no stain, no sealant. The char sheds rain instead of soaking it up, and the wood ages to a natural silver-brown instead of rotting from the outside in.

🚪 The Recessed Entrance

The archway sits back under the roof overhang instead of flush with the front wall, so rain and wind have to turn a corner to get in — the same idea as a covered porch, just scaled down. No door or hinge needed to keep the inside dry.

💧 The Vented Floor

Small gaps between the floorboards let rainwater drain straight through instead of pooling. Standing water and trapped feed are the usual reason a wooden feeder "goes sour" after a few weeks — this one's built not to hold either.

🪜 A Ladder, Not a Leap

Climbing in beats jumping in — it means the house can hang lower and closer, somewhere you can actually see from a window or the porch, instead of stuck high in the canopy like most store-bought boxes.

🧹 The Reachable Refill

Open front, no lid or latch to rust shut outdoors. Reach in, wipe it out, refill it — under a minute, no tools, no fighting a stuck hinge in February.

📏 The Size Dewey Settled On

Not so big it takes a peck of corn to look full, not so small that two squirrels can't share it — the size he landed on after forty years of watching what actually got used, not what looked impressive on a shelf.

“Most of what shows up on a backyard camera isn't a squirrel raiding a feeder out of spite — it's a squirrel taking the easiest food in the yard, which is usually whatever's already sitting out. Give it an easier, closer option of its own, stocked and visible, and a good amount of that traffic moves over on its own. It won't stop every visit — nothing reliably does — but most people notice the difference within a few weeks.”

Quality You Can Check Yourself

  • Solid pine, hand-torched — no paint, stain or laminate anywhere on it, inside or out.
  • Open archway entrance — no hinge, lid or latch to rust or jam shut come winter.
  • Vented floor — built to drain, not to pool water and go moldy underneath the feed.
  • 30in rope ladder, wooden rungs — already hung and ready, nothing to assemble.
  • Hand-built in small batches — every piece made by Dewey Caudill himself, Cosby, Tennessee.

A Full Season, No Deadline

Squirrels don't work on anybody's schedule but their own, so the guarantee isn't tied to a clock either. Hang it, fill it, and live with it through the season. If it's not right for your yard, send it back for a full refund — no explanation needed.

A note on handmade variation and wild visitors: Every house is cut and torched by hand from real pine, so grain, color and small marks vary from one piece to the next — that's the mark of it being handmade, not a flaw. Squirrels are wild: placement and a few weeks' patience make a real difference, but nobody can promise an exact move-in date, or that they'll give up the bird feeder and the garden entirely. Skip bread, and skip anything salted — squirrels can't process salt the way we can.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

800+ Happy Customers

Excellent 4.9

What Dewey's customers are saying

Ordered Dewey's treehouse on a whim after the squirrels kept digging up my tulip bulbs. Didn't expect much, but the char finish is even deeper in person than in the photos — you can tell it was actually torched by hand, not just stained. Been in the ground three weeks now and my flower bed's finally been left alone.

I've been burned by "handmade" online before, so I almost scrolled past. Glad I didn't. Mounting it took ten minutes, no instructions needed, and the joinery is tighter than anything I've bought at the garden center. It's up on the fence now and already looks like it belongs there.

Honestly bought it more for how it looked on the fence than anything else. Wasn't expecting a squirrel to actually move in within the first week, let alone bring its own stash of acorns in there. My bird feeder has had way less traffic since. Didn't see that coming.

Wasn't expecting to care this much about a squirrel house — then it showed up. You feel the hand-torching the second you pick it up, nothing factory about it. Mounting screws were already included, drill went right through the pre-drilled holes, done before my coffee got cold.
