“For 34 years I patched up the same Christmas injury: a knuckle that met a grater at the last bit of ginger. When my granddaughter scraped hers in my kitchen, I sat down and drew a plate with nothing on it that can cut.”

Dilys Prothero worked in A&E at the hospital in Carmarthen from 1987 to 2021. After she retired she took a pottery evening class and set up a wheel in the back room of her cottage. After one Christmas gingerbread mishap she drew this plate, and now she throws every one on her wheel and cuts every ring of teeth by hand with a small wooden tool. It took twelve tries to get the teeth right. Her own kiln holds only four plates, so they were fired in the big kiln of her friend Emrys Bowen, a potter in nearby Llangadog. That kiln has now been fired for the last time, and what’s left of that firing is all there is.

Made with love in Llandeilo, Wales — Dilys

Fresh ginger in 3 easy steps

No blades, no gripping, no clogged holes

1

Hold it in your hand

A knob of ginger, a garlic clove, a nutmeg, held the way that’s comfortable for you.

2

Rub in small circles

The teeth turn it into smooth paste in seconds. The juice runs into the channel.

3

Spoon & rinse

Scrape the paste off with a spoon, rinse the plate under the tap. Done.

What arrives at your door

Wrapped by hand, tested with fresh ginger first

1 Ginger & Garlic Plate

Glazed ceramic, 11.7 cm across, in the design you choose.

Glazed ceramic teeth

Cut by hand on Dilys’s wheel and fired on, so they can’t wear off or rust.

Juice channel

A smooth ring around the teeth that keeps every drop on the plate.

Packed by hand in Llandeilo

Each plate is tested, wrapped in paper and boxed by Dilys or Carys.

Why it works better than your grater

Six things Dilys got right

NO. 01

Nothing on it can cut you

No blades and no metal edges. The glazed teeth tear the fibres open instead of slicing, so you can grate right down to the last bit.

NO. 02

Every drop stays on the plate

The juice runs into the channel around the teeth. Nothing is lost inside a grater or under a press.

NO. 03

The strings stay behind

Stringy ginger fibres catch on the teeth, so your tea, stir-fry and gingerbread dough get smooth paste, not threads.

NO. 04

Easy on tired hands

Hold the ginger or garlic in your whole hand and rub in circles. No squeezing a garlic press, no gripping a slippery rasp.

NO. 05

Teeth set at the right height

Twelve tries to get them right, and every ring still cut by hand: sharp enough to grip, never sharp enough to cut. The cheap copies get this wrong.

NO. 06

From worktop to table

Pretty enough to leave out. Grate garlic straight into a little olive oil and bring the plate to the table for dipping bread.

A metal grater vs. Dilys’s plate

For ginger, garlic and the small things

Box grater / rasp / press Dilys’s plate
Your fingers ✗ Get close to sharp edges at the end ✓ No edges anywhere
The last bit ✗ Usually thrown away ✓ Grated down to the nub
Juice ✗ Runs onto the worktop ✓ Collects in the channel
Fibres ✗ Clog the holes ✓ Stay on the teeth, rinse off
Grip ✗ Squeeze or hold a handle ✓ Just hold the ginger
Material ✗ Metal or plastic ✓ Glazed ceramic

From 34 years in A&E

“Nobody ever came in hurt from the first half of a ginger root. It was always the end, when the piece got small and their knuckles got close. So I made something where the end doesn’t matter.”

— Dilys Prothero, retired A&E sister, Carmarthenshire

Perfect for

The small jobs in every kitchen

🫚 Fresh ginger tea 🧄 Garlic for sauces & dressings 🍪 Christmas gingerbread 🍋 Lemon & orange zest 🌰 Whole nutmeg 🧀 A little parmesan 👵 Hands that ache 🧒 Little helpers in the kitchen 🎁 A present for the cook

🛡️ Dilys’s 90-Day “It Has to Grate” Guarantee

If it doesn’t turn your ginger into paste, or you just don’t love it, send it back within 90 days and get your money back. No questions asked.

Good to know: The plate is small on purpose, 11.7 cm across, about the size of a saucer. It grates one knob of ginger or a few cloves of garlic at a time. For big jobs like a block of cheese or carrots for coleslaw, keep your box grater. Ceramic is breakable, so treat it like a good mug. Because every plate is finished by hand, the painted border can vary slightly from the photos.

The Last Firing

A note from Dilys:

I throw every plate on my own wheel, cut every ring of teeth by hand and paint the borders myself. My little kiln only holds four plates, so they were fired in Emrys's big kiln, and in October he fired it for the last time. Every plate on this page comes from that firing, and I rub a knob of fresh ginger over every single one before it is wrapped.

When these are gone, there won't be any more like them.

Diolch, and thank you for giving one a good home. — Dilys

What Dilys's customers are saying

Customer holding the Cornflower grater plate in her kitchen

Bought the Cornflower one because it matched my blue kitchen and thought it would mostly sit on the shelf. Not a bit of it. It's proper heavy glazed ceramic, the little flowers are painted even nicer than in the photos, and it grates garlic to paste in seconds.

Bethan L., Cardiff

Customer with the Golden Sun plate and ginger in her conservatory

Do check the size, it's smaller than I'd pictured, about a saucer. But honestly that's all you need for a knob of ginger. The stringy bits stay on the teeth and the paste comes off with a teaspoon. My knuckles are very grateful.

Alison W., Ludlow

Customer holding the Poppy Red grater plate

I've got arthritis in both thumbs and the garlic press had got to be a real chore. Now I just hold the clove and go round in circles, no squeezing at all. Lovely bright red too, it cheers up the kitchen on a grey morning.

Hilary B., Harrogate

Blue Vine plate with grated garlic on a kitchen worktop

Garlic for the spag bol in about twenty seconds and nothing left but the papery skin. A quick rinse under the tap and a brush and it's clean, no garlic smell hanging about. Wish I'd had one years ago.

Dawn K., Newport

Ripple plate with grated ginger next to a mug of ginger tea

Fresh ginger tea every morning now. I grate a small piece right on the plate and scrape it into my mug, juice and all. It's solid and sits flat on the windowsill, doesn't slide about like my old plastic one.

Kirsty M., Bath

Golden Sun plate just unpacked from brown paper

Arrived wrapped in brown paper in a little box, not a chip on it, and quicker than I expected. The yellow is exactly the sunny yellow from the website. Worth every penny for something painted by hand.

How is the plate made?

Dilys throws every plate herself on the potter's wheel in the back room of her cottage in Llandeilo. While the clay is leather-hard she cuts every ring of teeth by hand with a small wooden tool, all at the same height, then paints the border. Her own kiln only holds four plates, so they were fired in the big kiln of her friend Emrys Bowen, a potter in Llangadog. That kiln has now been fired for the last time, and every plate is tested with fresh ginger before it is wrapped.
