Thirty-Eight Years, Built by Hand in Mason County, Texas

Doris Kessler, 68. Her father repaired televisions on the square in Mason and sat her at his workbench at six years old. She set her first two hives at thirty and built her first string of bee lights the same summer, at his bench, with the same soldering gun she uses today. Close to three thousand of them since — given away, or handed across her honey table on a Saturday for whatever people pushed into her hand. She never advertised one. This is the last of them. She leaves the place at the end of the month.

“A woman came to my honey table with a little boy who’d been stung that spring. He wouldn’t go in his own back yard anymore — she said he’d stand at the screen door and look at it. I took a string off the frame and gave it to her and wouldn’t take her money. She wrote me that winter to say he’d taken to counting them before bed. I’ve thought about that letter a long while. A child ought to get to love one before something teaches him to be scared of it.”

Why These Lights

Six Things You Won’t Find on a Shelf String

Every point below comes out of thirty-eight years of building the same thing the same way — and of throwing out every version that didn’t survive a Texas summer on her own fence.

⬢ The Work

Every Joint Set by Hand and Sealed on Its Own

There is a connection behind every single bee on the string. On a factory run, each one is made by somebody paid by the hour, at speed, and sealed — if at all — by machine. That is where a bought string dies: one wet winter finds one bad joint, and half the run goes dark. Doris sets hers sitting down and seals each one separately. “Mine were made sitting down,” she says. “The difference is I don’t hurry the joints.”

⬢ The Light

Warm Amber, Not the Hard Blue-White

Most solar strings on a shelf burn a cold blue-white, because blue-heavy LEDs are cheaper and read as “brighter” under shop lighting. In a garden they make the place look like a parking lot. Doris pulled hers all the way to the warm end — the color of a hive at dusk, or of amber held up against a lamp. The bodies glow rather than glare, and from across a yard a fence reads as a swarm at rest instead of a row of bulbs.

⬢ Run Time

Dusk to Daylight, Not Dusk to Ten

“You sit out on a summer evening in this country until eleven, twelve. What good is a light that’s asleep before you are?” So she stopped compromising on the two parts nobody bothers with: the largest panel that fits the head, and the largest cell that fits behind it. A full day of sun puts eight to thirteen hours in it, against the five or six you get from a shelf string. It is still on when you let the dog out.

⬢ Power

Solar — There Is Nothing to Plug In

There was never power anywhere near the fence her first string went on, and she was not about to trench a line out to it. So it ran on a solar head staked in beside the post, and every string she has built since has run the same way. Push the stake in where the sun hits, hang the string where you want it. It charges all day and switches itself on at dusk. No cord across the lawn, no outlet, no timer to set, no switch to remember.

⬢ Size

Three Sizes — 20, 30 or 50 Bees

Size here is counted in bees, because that is what actually tells you how much of a garden a string covers. The twenty is for a doorway, a window box, a single shrub or a balcony rail. The thirty takes a porch rail, a garden bench, an arbour or a small tree. The fifty runs a whole fence line, a hedge or a pergola. Same build, same light, same run time on all three.

⬢ Weather

Proven Through a Texas Summer Before It Was Sold

Every change Doris ever made to the build — the head, the cell, the way a joint gets sealed — went out on her own fence line first and stayed there through a full Texas summer before it went into anything she handed to another person. Heat, dust, and the kind of storm that takes the trash cans down the road. Nothing reached a customer that hadn’t already survived a season at her place.

⬢   Engineer’s Note

“Almost every solar string that fails does so for one of three reasons, and all three are cost decisions made before the thing was ever built. The first is the panel: a small polycrystalline cell converts roughly thirteen percent of what lands on it, where a monocrystalline of the same footprint gets you closer to nineteen. The second is storage — a 600 mAh cell simply cannot hold an evening, so the string dies around ten whatever the panel does. The third, and the one nobody sees, is the joints. On a machine run they are made fast and sealed inconsistently, and moisture only needs to find one of them. That is why a shelf string is bright in June and dark by October. Oversize the panel, oversize the cell, seal every joint individually, and there is very little left in the design that can fail.”

⬢   Before You Order — Three Sizes, Two Things to Check

Every order is one complete string with its own solar head and ground stake. You choose the size, and the size is counted in bees: 20 bees for a doorway, a window box, a single shrub or a balcony rail · 30 bees for a porch rail, a garden bench, an arbour or a small tree · 50 bees for a whole fence line, a hedge or a pergola.

Pick by what you want to light, not by the run. Bee lights want a little slack between fixing points — a string pulled tight looks like cabling, and a string with a gentle dip between posts looks like bees. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one and let it hang looser. Nobody has ever regretted a bit more of it.

And the head has to see the sky. The stake goes wherever the sun actually lands for most of the day, and it does not have to sit next to where the lights hang. A head tucked into the shade of the same hedge it is lighting is far and away the most common reason somebody thinks a solar string is faulty.

Not sure? Send us a note on what you want to light and where the sun sits, and we’ll tell you which to take. We would far rather answer an email than ship a box back and forth.

90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Hang a string and live with it. Give it a bright day and a long evening, and see how the place feels once it comes on by itself. If it doesn’t belong there — the size, the spot, the light, anything at all — put it back in the box within 90 days for a full refund. In Doris’s words: “These ought to only go to people who’ll be glad to switch them on.”

⬢   A Note From the Barn

Doris builds every string herself and looks each one over before it ships. Small variations — in how the bees sit on the lead, in the exact spacing between them, in the finish of a sealed joint — are a natural part of work done one at a time at a bench. No two strings come off it quite alike, and that is by design rather than by accident. Strings arrive coiled, so expect a few kinks: hang them loosely, leave them a day, and they settle out on their own. Give the head a full day in the sun before you judge the first evening — a cell that has been sitting in a box wants one good charge before it does its proper hours. None of this is a fault. It is the maker’s hand at work — thirty-eight years of it.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

800+ Happy Customers

Excellent 4.9

What Doris' customers are saying

I have thrown away three sets of solar lights in four years so I did not have
high hopes. These came on the first night and they have come on every night
since, even the day after that storm came through last week. We eat out on the
deck most evenings now and I think it is because of these. Took a picture the
first night to send my sister and she ordered two the next morning.

Verified

Cheryl M., Sylvania, OH

Opened the box in the kitchen and the first thing I did was hold it up because
they are heavier than I expected. You can tell somebody actually made it, the
wire is thick and the little bees have real weight to them, not that flimsy
plastic feel. I got it out on the fence that evening and it looked exactly like
the pictures, which almost never happens. Ordered a second one for my daughter
before I even had the box off the counter.

Debbie R., Marshalltown, IA

Put these up on the deck rail the same afternoon they came and honestly forgot
about them until it got dark and there they were. I go out to let the dog out
around eleven and they are still going, which none of my old ones ever did. The
color is what I keep noticing, it is soft, not that hard white that makes
everything look like a parking lot. My husband said huh, which for him is a lot.
