Dudley's Handcrafted Bird Feeder
Dudley's Handcrafted Bird Feeder
A hanging copper feeding dish for the birds a tube feeder leaves out — robins, blackbirds, wrens and dunnocks. Hangs clear of cats and squirrels.
Please note: this is the last batch Dudley is making. When the current stock is gone, there won't be another run. Dispatched from the UK within 2–3 working days.
Every garden on our lane has a plastic tube feeder, and every one of them is a tit-and-finch club. The robin sits underneath picking up the bits that fall. I wanted a dish he could actually land in — something I could hang where the cat can't get at it, tip out, wipe, and hang again in half a minute.— Dudley Tunnicliffe, Church Stretton, Shropshire
What arrives at your door
One piece, hand-finished. No assembly.
Six things that separate this from a tube feeder
Each one changes which birds come and how safely they feed.
Robins, blackbirds, dunnocks and wrens can't cling to a tube like a blue tit can. A shallow dish they can stand in is the difference between seeing them from your window and never seeing them at all.
Clear of the ground on a short rod: cats can't crouch beside it, grey squirrels can't sit in it, nothing rots in the grass underneath.
Holds a thin layer, not a week's worth. Put out what gets eaten the same day — the way the RSPB now recommends — and nothing sits going damp or stale.
Lift off, tip out, hot water and a wipe, hang back up. No ports, no perches, no corners for old seed to hide in.
Bird charities advise moving feeders regularly. A hook over a branch means you can shift it across the garden in the time it takes to boil the kettle.
Darkens and greens a little more each season, like a church roof. After a winter outdoors no two look the same.
Why most people hang two
Because of how garden birds actually behave in winter.
Robins are fiercely territorial and drive other birds off a dish. A second feeder at the far end of the garden gives the wren and the dunnock somewhere to eat in peace.
The RSPB now advises spacing feeders apart so birds aren't crammed onto one spot where disease spreads. Two small dishes beat one busy one.
Sunflower hearts in one, mealworms in the other. Finches and tits take the seed, robins and blackbirds the mealworms.
One hanging, one drying after its weekly wash. The birds never find an empty hook on a frosty morning.
From the workshop
"A handful each morning, let them clear it, tip out anything left before dark. Come May, stop the seed, swill it out and let it fill with rain — it makes a decent bird bath through the summer. But I built it for the robin in January."
90 days, no argument
Hang it, feed from it, watch who turns up. Not convinced after three months? Send it back for a full refund. No forms, no questions.
Handcrafted means one of a kind. Small variations in the copper tone are the mark of a hand finish, and every dish ages differently outdoors.

A message from Dudley:
After fifty-odd years of bending metal, my hands have decided it's time to stop. This is the last batch of feeders I'll make. Each one was shaped and finished by hand in my workshop in Church Stretton, slowly, the way my grandfather taught me. Nothing rushed, nothing sent off to a factory.
I hope they end up in gardens where somebody stands at the kitchen window every morning and counts the robins.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so is the workshop.

What Dudley's customers are saying
Arrived this morning and I had it out of the box and in my hand before the kettle had boiled. It is heavier than it looks in the photos, proper metal, not the flimsy stuff you get at the garden centre. The little bird on the rim is a lovely touch. Filled it with sunflower hearts, hung it from the apple tree and had a blue tit on it within the hour.

Took me about two minutes up the stepladder, hook over the branch, done. No screws, no faff. I put a handful of seed in each morning and it's gone by lunch. Tipping it out and wiping it round takes thirty seconds, which is more than I can say for my old tube feeder. Thumbs up from me.

Bought it for the garden but really it is for my daughter. She is three and checks on the birdies every morning before nursery. A robin has claimed it as his own. The copper is already going a bit green at the edges and honestly it looks better for it.

My morning cuppa now comes with a show. Blue tits on the rim before I've sat down, and the robin turns up the second I go back inside. Packaging was decent, no dents, and it came quicker than I expected. Would happily pay more for it.

Hung it off the pergola right outside the kitchen window so I can watch from the sink. Blackbirds, sparrows, a wren once. Honestly thought the robin would ignore it like he does the tube feeder, but he's in it every morning. Ever so pleased with it.

Honest review. It is smaller than I pictured, about the size of a dinner plate, so manage your expectations. But that is also why the small birds like it, and a handful of seed is enough for a day. Ordered a second one for mealworms and hung it at the other end of the garden.
