Edwina’s Handquilted Christmas Basket

“Too pretty to pack away in January.”

— what a customer told Edwina at her parish Christmas fair, fourteen years ago

52years of quilting in the old stable
~3,000baskets made since 2012
426left from the final run

Made by hand in an old stone stable in Rothbury, Northumberland

For fourteen Christmases, Edwina Hetherington made these baskets for the people she knew — her family, her neighbours, the women from church, and friends of friends who asked twice. She never sold them at the fair and never advertised them. They travelled by word of mouth.

Every basket starts the same way: a heavy cotton-blend face fabric over a firm wadded interior, run through her 1973 Bernina in a meandering quilt stitch that wraps all the way around. Then the Christmas design goes on, piece by piece — the Santa’s beard, the snowman’s scarf, every holly leaf and every berry cut, layered and appliquéd by hand.

At the end of November 2026, Edwina is closing her sewing room. The 426 baskets on this page are what’s left. Her grandkids Tamsin and Rory pack and ship every order.

The five designs from the final collection

Santa

A waving Father Christmas with a white quilted beard, red poinsettias, holly and gold stars all around.

Snowman

A smiling snowman in a black top hat and red knit scarf, with snowflakes, pinecones and poinsettias.

Christmas Tree

A full green tree with red bows, ornaments and a gold star, and a pile of wrapped presents underneath.

Reindeer

A proud reindeer with hanging ornaments in his antlers, framed by pine boughs, berries and pinecones.

Gingerbread

Two gingerbread people with candy canes, peppermints, a little tree and holly berries.

Six things that make it Edwina’s

No. 01

Quilted all the way around

Cotton-blend face fabric over a wadded interior, stitched in Edwina’s meandering quilt pattern on every side — not a flat print on thin canvas.

No. 02

Appliquéd, not printed

Every Santa, snowman, reindeer and holly leaf is cut, layered and stitched on. You can run your fingers over the raised pieces. They won’t peel, crack or wash off.

No. 03

Stands on its own

No wire ring, no internal frame. The quilted walls hold the shape, whether the basket is empty or full to the brim with presents.

No. 04

Handles that hold

Doubled canvas handles, bartacked at the stress points — the one detail Edwina has never changed in fifty years of finishing her work.

No. 05

Room for the whole season

At about 41 cm across and 56 cm deep, it takes a pile of wrapped presents, two or three throw blankets, or every stocking in the house.

No. 06

The last of them

426 baskets remain from Edwina’s final run. The sewing room closes at the end of November. When these are gone, there will be no more.

How people use theirs

  • Wrapped presents under the tree
  • Throws by the fire
  • Stockings on Christmas morning
  • A present filled with biscuits and hot chocolate
  • Children’s toys in the playroom
  • Spare-room towels over Christmas
  • Wrapping paper and ribbons

Most customers tell Edwina the same thing: it was supposed to come out in December and go back in the cupboard in January. It never went back.

Questions people ask Tamsin

Is it big enough for real presents?

Yes. At about 41 cm across and 56 cm tall, it fits a good pile of wrapped gifts — shoe boxes, books, jumpers, toys. Taller presents simply stand up out of the top.

Does it really stand up when it’s empty?

It does. The quilted, wadded walls hold the round shape without a frame. It won’t fold over in the corner.

Which design should I pick?

Gran’s pick is the Santa for a front room and the Snowman for a spare room. The Christmas Tree and Reindeer look beautiful next to a fireplace, and the Gingerbread is the favourite in kitchens and children’s rooms.

When will it be dispatched?

Within 2–3 working days of your order, with tracking. Tamsin and Rory keep sending them out after the sewing room closes, for as long as baskets are left.

Is this really the last of them?

Yes. Edwina has no apprentice and isn’t passing the patterns on. There will be no reorders once these 426 are gone.

Edwina’s 30-day money-back guarantee

“These baskets should only go home with people who’ll actually love having them there.” Put it next to your tree, by the fireplace or in the spare room and live with it for a while. If it doesn’t belong there, send it back within 30 days and get your money back. No questions asked — just email info@cedarandtinco.com.

Care & use

Inside: wipe the lining with a damp cloth.

Outside: spot-clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let it air dry standing up. Please don’t put it in the tumble dryer.

Between seasons: most people never put it away. If you do, store it upright in a dry cupboard so the quilted walls keep their shape.

What Edwina's customers are saying

Customer photo 1 of an Edwina Christmas basket

Put the Father Christmas one next to the tree the day it arrived and every present in the house ended up in it. It’s properly thick and quilted, nothing like the flimsy printed ones in the shops. My grandson asked if Father Christmas had come early. Well packed and sooner than I expected.

Customer photo 2 of an Edwina Christmas basket

I was a bit nervous ordering online but it’s even prettier in person. The snowman is raised up off the fabric and you can feel every stitch. Stands up on its own, even empty. It holds all our throws by the wood burner now.

Customer photo 3 of an Edwina Christmas basket

Bought the reindeer for myself and the gingerbread for my daughter’s first Christmas in her own house. She sent me a photo of it full of presents and said it was the first thing that made the place feel like home.

Customer photo 4 of an Edwina Christmas basket

The handles are strong and the stitching is ever so neat. Carried it full of presents up two flights of stairs to my sister’s and it didn’t sag at all. Everyone at Christmas dinner wanted to know where it came from.

Customer photo 5 of an Edwina Christmas basket

I keep the gingerbread one in the hall for the post and the scarves, and I don’t think it’s going back in the cupboard in January. It looks like it was made for the house. Came well wrapped.

Customer photo 6 of an Edwina Christmas basket

Ordered two as presents and kept a third. The quality is the real thing, the kind of handwork you just don’t see any more. So glad I found these before they were all gone.

How is it made?

Edwina quilts every basket on her 1973 Bernina in the old stone stable behind her cottage in Rothbury, Northumberland: cotton-blend face fabric over a wadded interior, quilted all the way round, with every Christmas motif cut and appliquéd by hand. Five designs: Santa, Snowman, Christmas Tree, Reindeer and Gingerbread. This is her final collection.
