Eino’s Penguin Hand Warmer
Final run · last 1,800 on the shelf
“If it’s cold out of the box, it doesn’t leave my counter.” — Eino
2
halves, 1 for each hand
20 + 20
hours, up to
3
heat levels
Sold over the same counter since 1946
Eino Kangas has stood behind the counter of Kangas Hardware on Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan since 1985. His grandfather came over from Finland in 1923 and worked underground at the Quincy Mine for twenty-three years, then opened the store on this corner in 1946: lamp oil, stove parts, shovels and nails.
In 2016, after one winter too many of customers complaining that throwaway packets went cold before the second bus, Eino tested eleven rechargeable warmers side by side. The penguin was the only one he put on his shelf. A little over 9,000 have gone across his counter in the nine winters since, and the model has not changed once.
The building has been sold and the store closes on November 30. These 1,800 are the last ones. Whatever is left keeps going out from Marit’s garage until the shelf is empty.
— Eino
“Mrs. Raisanen works the school crossing out front. Every week she bought a box of packets from me, and every week they were cold before the second bus. So I tried eleven rechargeable warmers over a whole winter. This penguin was the only one I’d put on my shelf. I didn’t like the face. She came back for four more.”
— Eino Kangas, Kangas Hardware, since 1985
What arrives at your door
- 1 penguin hand warmer that splits into 2 separate halves
- Switched on and checked on Eino’s counter before it is boxed
Why it’s the one on his shelf
No. 01
Two warmers in one
The penguin splits into two halves. Keep one in each pocket, one in each hand, or hand one to whoever is next to you on the bleachers.
No. 02
Up to 20 + 20 hours
Up to twenty hours per half, and there are two halves. That’s a whole double bus route, a full day on the ice, or a long night in the stand.
No. 03
Three heat levels
Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. Three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.
No. 04
USB-C rechargeable
Charges from the same type of cable as most new phones. No more boxes of throwaway packets in the truck.
No. 05
Pocket size
3.46 in tall, 2.2 in wide. It fits in a coat pocket, inside a mitten or in a closed hand.
No. 06
Checked by hand
Every warmer is opened, switched on and run through all three levels on Eino’s counter before it goes in a mailer.
Throwaway packets or Eino’s penguin?
| Disposable packets | Eino’s penguin |
|---|---|
| Used once, then into the trash | Recharged again and again over USB-C |
| A new box every week of winter | One warmer, winter after winter |
| Cold before the second bus | Up to 20 hours per half, and there are two halves |
| One temperature, whatever it decides | Three heat levels at the press of a button |
| Lumpy and stiff once it is spent | A smooth silver front that warms evenly across your palm |
| One packet, one hand | Splits in two: one for each hand or each pocket |
| Off a factory line, nobody checks it | Switched on and checked on Eino’s counter before it is boxed |
How to use it
- Charge both halves fully before the first use, with a USB-C cable, the same kind most new phones use.
- Press the button once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. The three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.
- Pull the two halves apart if you want two warmers: one in each pocket, or one for whoever is standing next to you.
- Put them back together and charge them overnight, ready for the next cold morning.
Ask Eino — from behind the counter
“Which setting should I use?”
Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. I start on low and press again when I’m standing still in the wind.
“Why two halves?”
Because you have two hands. And because somebody next to you always forgets their gloves.
“Is it heavy?”
No, but it isn’t flimsy either. It has a bit of weight to it, solid in your hand, and each half still disappears into a closed fist.
“Can I charge it in the truck?”
Yes, if your truck has a USB port and you have a USB-C cable. It charges the same way your phone does.
“Is it a toy?”
No. The face is silly. I didn’t like it either. Then I watched grown men in hunting jackets pull it out of their pockets and grin. It stays.
From someone who is outside every winter morning
“I’ve carried mail out past Calumet six days a week for nine winters, and this penguin has been in my coat for all nine. One half lives in my left pocket, the other in my right. My hands are in and out of mailboxes all morning, and it’s still warm when I finish the route. The only trouble I’ve had with it is my wife taking it.”
— Rural mail carrier, out past Calumet, Michigan · owner since 2017

What Eino's customers are saying
Paid more for a three-pack of the throwaway packets last winter than this cost me. I keep one half in each pocket for the walk to the mailbox and it is still going when I get back from the store. The penguin face makes my grandkids laugh every single time.

I ref high school basketball and stand in cold parking lots half my life. Charged it on Sunday, used it Tuesday and Thursday on low and it still had juice for Friday. Splitting it in two was the part I didn’t know I needed.

Bought it for my husband’s deer stand. He laughed at the face, then took it anyway, and now I can’t get it back. Ordering a second one so I have my own.

Kathy L., Brainerd, MN
Fits right inside my mitten without making it tight. Three levels is plenty, I mostly use the middle one. Came quick and it was already charged a little when I opened it.

Renee T., Syracuse, NY
I walk the dog at 5:30 every morning in January. My fingers used to be done after ten minutes. Now I hold the penguin and switch hands halfway round. Small thing, big difference.

Got one for each of my daughters for their college walks across campus. Both texted me a picture of it the first week. USB-C means they actually remember to charge it.
