Elwood's Bird Feeder

A hanging copper feeding dish for the birds a tube feeder leaves out — juncos, cardinals, tree sparrows and mourning doves. Hangs clear of cats, rats and the mess under a feeder.

☂️ Inverted umbrella design🪝 Hooks over any branch🐦 One sculpted bird on the rim❄️ Built for the winter months
⏰

Please note: this is the last batch. When the current stock is gone, there won't be another run. Ships within Canada in 2–3 business days.

Every yard on our road has a plastic tube feeder, and every one of them is a chickadee-and-finch club. The juncos and the cardinal sit underneath in the snow picking up what falls. I wanted a dish they could actually land in — something I could hang where the cat can't get at it, tip out, rinse, and hang again in half a minute.

Seven things that separate this from a tube feeder

Each one changes which birds come and how safely they feed.

01An open dish the ground-feeders can land in

Juncos, cardinals, tree sparrows and mourning doves can't cling to a tube like a chickadee can. A shallow dish they can stand in is the difference between seeing them at eye level and seeing them scratching in the snow underneath.

02Hanging, so it's not a platform on a post

Clear of the ground on a short rod: cats can't crouch beside it, rats can't climb to it, and there's no pile of mouldy seed and droppings building up underneath.

03Sized for "little and often"

Holds a thin layer, not two weeks' worth. Put out what gets eaten the same day and nothing sits going damp or mouldy — exactly what Birds Canada recommends.

04Clean in thirty seconds

Lift off, tip out, hot water and a rinse, hang back up. No ports, no perches, no corners for old seed to hide in. Birds Canada's first rule: only use feeders that are easy to clean.

05Easy to move — and you should

Moving a feeder now and then keeps the ground underneath clean. A hook over a branch means you can shift it across the yard in the time it takes to pour a coffee.

06Heavy enough not to spin

The iron core gives it weight, so a dish of millet doesn't end up on the snow every time the wind comes off the lake.

07The copper patina

Darkens and greens a little more each season, like an old church steeple. After a winter outdoors no two look the same.

Why most people hang two

Because of how backyard birds actually behave in winter.

The blue jay wants it all

A blue jay will land on any dish and empty it while everything else waits in the lilac. A second feeder a few metres away gives the juncos somewhere to eat in peace.

Spacing cuts crowding

Spreading birds over two small dishes instead of one busy one means fewer birds on the same seed at once — which is how disease spreads at feeders.

Two foods, two dishes

White millet in one, black-oil sunflower in the other. Juncos and sparrows take the millet, cardinals and chickadees the sunflower.

One up, one in the wash

One hanging, one drying after its rinse. The birds never find an empty hook on a minus-twenty morning.

A junco weighs about as much as three loonies and has to refuel every daylight hour in a cold snap. Quantity discount at checkout for a second, third or fourth feeder.
Forty-one years I laid copper on steeples and roofs. It's the one metal I know that sits outside for a century and only gets better looking. The first feeder I made after Bev's umbrella blew over was copper, and every one since.
— Elwood on why it's copper

Tube feeder vs Elwood's copper dish

Same seed, very different birds.

Who can eat from it Tube: clinging birds only · Copper dish: juncos, cardinals, sparrows, doves and the clingers
How much it holds Tube: up to two weeks of seed · Copper dish: one day's seed
Cleaning Tube: ports, perches, corners a brush can't reach · Copper dish: tip, rinse, 30 seconds
Under the feeder Tube: spilled seed and droppings for the ground-feeders · Copper dish: they eat up off the ground
Lifespan Tube: plastic cracks in the cold · Copper dish: patinas and lasts
🛠️

From the workshop

"A handful each morning, let them clear it, tip out anything left before dark. Come May, stop the seed, rinse it out and let it fill with rain — it makes a decent drinking dish through the summer. But I built it for the junco in January."

"Hang it a metre or two from a shrub or a cedar hedge. The juncos like somewhere to dive into when the hawk comes over."

🛡️

30 days, no argument

Hang it, feed from it, watch who turns up. Not happy with it within 30 days? Send it back for a full refund. No forms, no questions.

The Winter Bev's Umbrella Blew Over

A note from Elwood:

One December an early storm turned my wife Bev's old umbrella inside out and dropped it in her flower bed. A week later there was a junco standing in it, eating the seed that had blown in. Forty-one years I laid copper on steeples. That afternoon I made one out of copper for the juncos.

My hand has done enough hammering. These are the last 96 I raised. When they're gone, there won't be more.

What Elwood's customers are saying

Fifteen years of tube feeders and I never once saw a junco on one. They were always underneath in the snow. Hung this on Saturday and there were three in it by Sunday lunch, standing there like they owned it. Had to take a selfie for my sister.

Put it on a bracket at the corner of the deck. Juncos in the dish, a mourning dove pacing the railing beside it. What sold me was the cleaning: I'd stopped feeding after the siskin outbreak. This I rinse in the laundry sink in thirty seconds.

My daughter took this while I was topping it up. The juncos don't even wait for me to get back inside any more. Heavy, well made, doesn't spin around in the wind off the lake, and it's the first feeder I've had that takes ten seconds to rinse.

Came beautifully packed with a little handwritten card. I bought a bag of millet the same day like Brynn suggested and hung it in the crabapple. Chickadee on it before I was back inside.

My father is 88 and can't get out to the yard any more. We hung it outside his bedroom window. He now gives us a full report at breakfast, cardinal first, and he's got his old bird book out again.

How are your products made?

Every bowl is raised from flat sheet over an iron stake in Elwood's workshop in Picton, Prince Edward County. The hook is bent hot, the little bird is riveted to the rim, and the copper finish is burnished and sealed at the bench. It is iron with an applied copper coating, so it has weight and doesn't spin in the wind.
