Ewart's Sunset Lamp
Made in a garden workshop in Old Hunstanton, Norfolk
A Norfolk sunset for a room without a sea view
Ewart Pell made the lit signs along the Hunstanton seafront for fifty-one years. He made this one for his wife Thelma, who spends her evenings in bed now and can’t get to a window, and painted its sky by hand. Pull the red ball and the sun goes down. Pull the black one and it comes back up.
“There she goes.” “Right on time.” Forty-eight years in the same back garden.
“I spent my life putting up lights for people on the seafront. The only light Thelma ever cared about was the one I didn’t make. So I made her that one, small enough to hang beside her bed.”
— Ewart Pell, sign-maker, Old Hunstanton, Norfolk
This is not a projector throwing an orange circle on the wall. The sun sits inside the panel and travels. Every pull on the red cord takes it a little lower, until it slips under the black horizon.
High up, the sun is white-gold and bright. As it goes down it warms and dims, to orange and then to the last red ember you see right before it’s gone. Warm white light, never blue.
Thelma’s right hand could still grip, but it couldn’t manage a small switch any more. So there are no buttons to hunt for and no remote to lose. Two balls on cords, black for up, red for down.
30 by 30 centimetres. Hung beside a headboard, the cords hang right where a hand rests. It also works above a sofa, beside an armchair, on a landing or across from a favourite chair.
Ewart paints each sky himself, layer by layer, with the brushes he once used to letter arcade signs. Pale gold, orange, a deep October red, then the dark line of the land. No two come out exactly alike.
Most owners say the same thing: they pull it down at bedtime and think about wherever it was they used to watch the real one. Thelma is usually asleep before the sun is all the way down.
- After tea, bring the sun up. Pull the black ball a few times. The sun climbs out of the horizon and the wall around it turns warm.
- Leave it there while you talk, read or rest. High up, it fills the corner of the room with a soft gold glow.
- When you’re ready, take it down. Pull the red ball, a little at a time, and watch it go from gold to orange to ember. Then say whatever it is you used to say in the garden.
| Typical sunset lamp | Ewart’s Sunset Lamp | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | A flat coloured circle thrown onto the wall | A sun inside a framed sky, with a real horizon |
| Movement | None, or colour that flashes and cycles | The sun rises and sets as you pull the cords |
| Controls | Small buttons, a remote or an app | Two balls on cords: black up, red down |
| Where it sits | On a bedside table, with a flex to the socket | On the wall, wired in, nothing on the floor |
| Made by | A factory, for anyone | A Norfolk sign-maker, painted by hand, for his wife first |
From 24 years in care homes
“Most of the people I work with haven’t seen a proper sunset in years. By the evening they’re in bed, and the windows look onto a courtyard or the car park. What I see with Ewart’s lamps is the conversation they start. A lady who barely talks will tell you about the beach huts at Wells. It gives the evening a shape again.”
— Gillian Ashworth, activities coordinator, care home near Fakenham, Norfolk
- A sunset you control. Two pull cords move the sun up and down the panel, as slowly as you like.
- Warm light only. Integrated warm white LED, 3000K, the colour of late afternoon, not the blue of a screen.
- Bedside size. 30 × 30 centimetres, metal body, acrylic face with a hand-painted sky.
- Nothing to replace. The LED is built in, with an average life of about 50,000 hours. No bulbs to change.
- Made to stay on the wall. Wired in like a wall light, damp rated, and it works with a dimmer switch (not included).
- 248 lamps and no restock. The cottage is sold and the workshop goes with it in January. When the shelves are empty, that’s the end of it.
If it doesn’t do anything for the person you got it for, send it back within 90 days and get your money back. Ewart hasn’t had one sent back yet. Once someone has pulled it down the first night, they want it again the next.
This is a hardwired wall light. It has no plug. It mounts on a standard wall junction box, the same way a wall sconce does. It should be fitted by a qualified electrician, or by the care home’s maintenance staff. At Thelma’s care home it took the maintenance man one visit.
It is 30 centimetres square, about the width of a pillow. The photos are taken close up, so please check the size. It is made to hang beside a bed or a chair, not to light a whole room.
It looks best in the evening with the other lamps low. In bright daylight it is a quiet picture of a sunset. When the room gets dark, it becomes one.

The Back Garden Lamp
The Back Garden Lamp
A note from Ewart:
For forty-eight years Thelma and I watched the sun go down over the Wash from two deckchairs in our back garden in Old Hunstanton. Since her stroke she spends her evenings in bed in a care home in King's Lynn, and her window looks onto the car park. So I made her a sunset she can pull down herself, the way I made signs for fifty-one years.
Black ball brings the sun up, red ball takes it down. Most nights she is asleep before it is all the way down. The cottage is sold and the workshop goes with it in January. What is on the shelves is what there is.

What Ewart's customers are saying
Mum has been in a care home in Norwich for two years and her window looks at the ambulance bay. I drove it up and the maintenance man fitted it next to her bed the same afternoon. She pulled the red ball and said 'oh, there it goes.' I had a little cry in the car park. Good tears.

Fitted at the head of Dad's bed at the nursing home, right where his hand rests. He farmed in the Fens all his life. Now the carers tell me he asks for 'the sun' after tea. Solid little lamp with a metal back, nothing flimsy.

Bought it for myself, which I never do. It's across from my armchair in the flat. I bring the sun up for the evening news and pull it down when I'm ready for bed. Smaller than I expected but that's what I wanted.

We put it on the landing outside our bedroom instead of a night light. Low on the red it's just enough to see by at 2am and so much nicer to look at. Our electrician fitted it in about half an hour.

Mum is 88 and doesn't get out of bed much now. When I visit we bring the sun up together and she tells me about holidays in Sheringham. I've heard stories this month I never heard in fifty years.

Came quickly and really well packed, lots of padding, not a mark on it. The cords were already attached. The colours are deeper than in the photos, especially when the sun gets low. Ordering a second for my sister.

How are your products made?
Every lamp is a square, metal-backed box with an acrylic face: a gold-to-red sky above a dark horizon, and a warm white LED sun that rises and sets on two pull cords. Ewart checked each one on his bench in the workshop at Old Hunstanton, Norfolk, before it was boxed. It is a hardwired wall light with no plug, so it should be fitted by a qualified electrician or the care home's maintenance staff, like any wall light.
