Stitched by hand in Acton, Ontario — the town they called Leathertown

Gail Ferris, 69, has worked with leather since 1975. Since 1993 she has made her little owl bag in the brick shed behind her house. A tremor in her hands means she can no longer stitch. These are her last 731.

“A great horned owl lives in the old tannery across the creek. I call him the night shift. An owl that sits in a box all winter isn’t doing its job — I want to see these on shoulders.”

Gail Ferris · Acton, Ontario

What makes Gail’s owl bag special

🪡The Saddle Stitch

Two needles through the same hole, from opposite sides. If one stitch breaks, the rest hold. A machine seam opens like a zipper.

🦉The Three-Layer Face

Base, patterned wings and brow are cut and set separately. That is why the owl has a real expression.

❄️The Polished Edge

Every edge sanded, sealed and polished four times. Slush and road salt can’t get in, so it never frays.

👁️The Amber Eyes

Set deep into the leather instead of glued on top, so the owl seems to watch you as you turn it.

📱Small on Purpose

Phone, keys, wallet, lip balm. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.

🧤Hands Free, Even in Mittens

Worn across the body, over a winter coat if you like. Sits flat and doesn’t swing around.

“The saddle stitch is the oldest and strongest seam in leatherwork. It is why a good harness can last a lifetime. Very few people still use it on small bags, because it takes hours instead of minutes. Gail is one of the last who do.”

Ron Henshaw · Retired harness maker · Halton Hills, Ontario

Why Gail’s owl lasts

  • Hand-stitched seams. One broken stitch never opens the bag.
  • Sealed edges. No fraying, even after years of Canadian winters.
  • Holds its shape. It won’t go floppy after one season.
  • Gets better with age. The corners soften where your hand rests.
  • Checked one by one. Every owl is looked over in Gail’s workshop before it leaves.
❤️ 30-day money-back guarantee

If the owl doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Gail would rather have it back than have it sit in a box.

Good to know: The owl is small on purpose — about the size of a hardback book. It fits a phone, keys, a slim wallet and a lip balm. Every bag is finished by hand, so tiny differences in the beak or claws are normal.

The Last Stitch

A note from the workshop:

Gail Ferris started at the tannery in Acton, Ontario in 1975, aged eighteen — the town once called itself Leathertown. Since 1993 she has made her little owl bag in the brick shed behind her house — almost 7,000 of them, every seam stitched by hand. In the old tannery across the creek lives a great horned owl. She calls him the night shift. Now a tremor in her hands means the needle can no longer find the hole, and the workshop closes on December 18. 731 owl bags from her final collection are left. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?

Gail makes every owl in her workshop in Acton, Ontario. The face is built from three separate layers, the amber eyes are set into the leather by hand, and every edge is sanded, sealed and polished four times. Every seam is a two-needle saddle stitch, so if one stitch breaks the rest still hold. Small differences from bag to bag are part of the charm.
