🌳

Cut by hand from a 212-year-old Lanark County maple, after the February ice storm brought it down

Garnet Lacombe, seventy-six, Balderson, Lanark County. Forty-four years at the head saw and fifty-three years married to the woman who kept a light in his window. His hands are finished, and 212 bases are all that is left.

β€œA broker from Toronto offered to take every board by the board foot, cash, one appointment. It would have ended up as twelve-hundred-dollar lamps in hotel lobbies, and nobody would ever have been told where it came from. Verla kept a light in our kitchen window for fifty-three years. That maple isn’t leaving here by the board foot.”

β€” Garnet Lacombe, retired sawyer, Balderson, Lanark County

What arrives
🌳
The Lantern
Glass shade with a branching tree inside, on a hand-numbered sugar maple base.
πŸ“œ
Ring Card
Names the year your ring grew, out of the 212 Garnet counted on the stump.
πŸ”‹
Cordless Light
Battery-operated. No outlet, no cord. Any windowsill, any bedside table.
🎁
Gift Box
Most of these end up in someone else’s window.
Four things that make this lantern impossible to copy
πŸ”’
The Ring Number
Every base is hand-numbered on the underside, one through 212 β€” one for each ring Garnet counted on the stump. The card names the year your ring grew, starting with 1812. No other lantern comes with a birth year.
πŸͺ΅
The Heart Cut
Only the heartwood is used β€” the dark, dense centre of the trunk, where the rings sit tightest and the grain runs unbroken from edge to edge. Most of a fallen maple never becomes a base.
🌲
The Lanark Finish
Sanded by hand and rubbed with oil. No stain, no lacquer, nothing sprayed on. That is why the curl still lights up when the light moves, and why the box smells like maple when you open it.
πŸ”
The Kitchen-Table Test
Don’t take anyone’s word for it. Turn the base over and count the rings, feel how heavy it is for its size, hold it to your nose. Real old maple smells of sap and vanilla. A moulded copy has no rings, no weight and no smell.
Checked by a forester

β€œThree things tell you what you’ve got: the ring count, the weight and the smell. A moulded base can fake the look of one of them. Nobody fakes all three. And a maple that size and that age, standing alone on a ridge above Balderson β€” most foresters go a whole career without seeing one come down. What is on that man’s shelves is the last of it. There is no second tree to go and get.”

β€” Dale Fournier, retired forester, Ottawa Valley

Who this is for
πŸͺŸ Anyone who leaves a light on for someone πŸ’ Daughters buying for their mothers 🀍 Someone facing the evenings alone 🌲 People who miss the woods πŸͺ΅ Woodworkers and wood people πŸ› Bedside tables, windowsills and reading corners 🎁 Mother’s Day, birthdays and housewarmings 🏑 Lanark County and Ottawa Valley locals
What you are actually getting
  • Real Lanark County maple, not a print. A hand-sanded, oiled base cut from one 212-year-old tree β€” with a kitchen-table test anyone can run in about ten seconds.
  • Yours exists once. The rings, the figure and the curl never repeat, so no two bases are the same.
  • A documented year. A hand-numbered base and a card naming the year your ring grew β€” not a generic authenticity slip.
  • No cord, no outlet. Battery-operated, so it sits on a windowsill, a bedside table or a bookshelf β€” wherever somebody should see a light.
  • Small on purpose. About 9.5 centimetres tall, made for a windowsill or a bedside table, not a table lamp. Heartwood from a single trunk only goes so far, and Garnet wanted it to reach 212 homes.
  • 212 exist and there is no restock. The maple came down in February 2024, and Garnet is out of the workshop on 30 November. After that the rest are posted from Kingston, while stock lasts.
πŸ›‘
30 days, no questions

If it doesn’t make you switch off the big light the first night, send it back within 30 days and get your money back. In forty-four years at the mill, nobody ever sent a board of Garnet’s back.

Please read before ordering

Every base is cut from a different part of the same trunk. Ring width, colour and silver grain vary from lantern to lantern β€” the photographs show examples, not the exact base you will receive. That variation is the wood, not a defect.

The lantern is small: about 9.5 cm tall and 7 cm wide. It is a windowsill and bedside light, not a room lamp. We would rather say so here than have anyone surprised when the box arrives.

The Final Sale

Message from Garnet:

The workshop above Balderson closes on 30 November. Two hundred and twelve lanterns is everything that is left of the maple my wife watched from the kitchen window for fifty-three years. Every base was cut, sanded and numbered by hand, on the nights I could not sleep. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced.

When they are gone, they are gone β€” and so is the workshop. There is no second tree.

What Garnet's customers are saying

Customer photo of the hand-made driftwood tree lantern

Honestly I expected something flimsy for the price. It showed up and the base alone has real heft to it, solid wood, and the glass is thick. Nothing wobbles. It has been on the side table for a month and it still looks the way it did on day one.

I read Garnet's story and ordered one the same night. It came well wrapped, nothing broken. The light is warm and soft, not the harsh white you get from most of these. I have it on the counter and it is the last thing I switch off.

I have milled a bit of maple in my time so I looked it over pretty carefully. The rings are right there, the grain is real, and there is no stain hiding anything. Just oil. You do not see that at this price.

Smaller than I pictured, which turned out to be a good thing. It fits on the table beside my chair without taking the whole thing over. No cord running across the floor either, which at my age I appreciate more than I can say.

Mine sits on the kitchen windowsill. Because there is no plug I could put it where I actually wanted it instead of beside an outlet. On a dark afternoon with the snow out there it makes the whole corner feel warmer.

Got it for the bedroom and now it is the only light I turn on in the evening. The branches throw a soft pattern on the wall. I paid sixty nine dollars for something that looks like it cost a lot more, and the fact that the wood came off one tree is the part people ask about.
