Geoff's Handmade Bronze Bird Bath
Cast in solid bronze in a brick workshop in Shropshire
Geoff Hadley, 72, poured iron in a Black Country foundry for 36 years. In the Ironbridge Gorge he casts one thing now: a bronze bird bath, so garden birds have water in August and in January. His hands are giving out. These are his last 58.
“In the hottest summer they ever measured, I watched three blackbirds crowd one bowl of water and ignore the seed beside it. They weren’t starving. They were thirsty. That’s the day the dress became a bowl.”
Geoff Hadley · Coalport, Shropshire
What comes in the box
Seated girl in a gown of cast leaves
Her raised hem holds about half a litre
Cast perched on her hand
Safely packed, lovely to give
What makes Geoff’s bird bath special
Each figure comes out of one pour of solid bronze. No hollow resin, no glued halves that split in the first frost.
No paint, no chemicals. Every piece stands outside through one Shropshire winter until the soft green grows on its own.
Shallow on purpose, so robins, sparrows and finches can drink and bathe safely.
Overlapping leaves guide rain straight into the bowl. In a wet week it tops itself up.
Solid metal that won’t crack in frost or fade in sun. It looks better every year it stands outside.
Geoff files every leaf edge himself. No two figures are exactly alike.
“People put a lot of thought into feeding garden birds and almost none into water. In a heatwave or a hard frost, a shallow, clean bowl of water does more for blackbirds and sparrows than another feeder. A low, shallow bath near some cover is exactly right.”
Dr. Ruth Ellery · Garden-bird ecologist · Shropshire Wildlife volunteer
Perfect for
Why Geoff’s bird bath lasts
- Solid cast metal. Heavy and stable, it won’t blow over or crack.
- Natural patina. The green finish deepens with every season outside.
- Shallow, safe water. Never deep enough to be a danger to small birds.
- Easy to clean. Tip out, brush, refill. Done in a minute.
- Checked one by one. Every figure is inspected in Geoff’s workshop before it leaves.
If Geoff’s bird bath doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. He would rather have it back than see it sit in a shed.
Tip from Geoff: Stand it on level ground near a shrub or hedge, so birds have cover close by. Change the water every couple of days. On a frosty morning, a splash of warm (not boiling) water thaws the bowl in seconds.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the workshop:
Geoff Hadley poured iron in a Black Country foundry for 36 years. In the hottest summer Britain ever measured, he watched three blackbirds crowd one bowl of water and ignore the seed beside it. They weren’t starving. They were thirsty. So he cast a seated girl whose leafy dress becomes a shallow bowl, and let each one weather to green through a Shropshire winter. Now Dupuytren’s is curling his fingers and he can no longer grip the tongs safely. 58 figures from his final pour are left in his workshop in Coalport. When they are gone, the furnace goes out for good.

What people say about Geoff's bronze bird baths
I put it under the apple tree in our garden. The blackbirds found it the same day, and now there are two at the bowl most mornings.

Margaret T., Harrogate
The robins won’t leave it alone. Two of them splashing about at once is the best start to my day.

David R., Ludlow
My mum has it on her little patio among the geraniums. She watches the sparrows with her morning tea and calls it her little lady.

Linda P., Canterbury
Heavier and finer than the photos suggest. At the end of our gravel path it looks like something from an old country house garden.

Roger G., Cirencester
It really does fill itself up when it rains. After a shower the bowl is full and the goldfinches are straight back.

Susan M., Shrewsbury
You can feel every leaf vein. You can tell a person made this, not a machine. Worth far more than I paid.

Tom B., Norwich
Arrived beautifully packed. It was standing in the border within ten minutes, and I ordered a second one for my sister.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Geoff packs each mould with sand by hand and pours the metal in a single pour, so the figure is one solid piece with no glued seams. He files every leaf edge himself. Then each figure stands outside through one Shropshire winter, and frost and rain grow the soft green patina on their own, with no paint or chemicals. Every piece is checked in his workshop before it leaves. Small differences from figure to figure are part of the charm.
