The little pub for your garden squirrels, built by Cumbrian joiner Geoff Hartley to a design by his wife Ann, who has cared for squirrels for decades.

Mild, wet winters keep squirrels active for longer and spoil the nuts they buried in autumn, so by around the third week of January their larder is often empty. The Nuts Bar gives them a dry, safe spot to eat through the lean weeks, and from late summer it helps them stock up for later.

Built on the Sit-Down Principle

"A squirrel that feels safe sits down to eat. A nervous one grabs and runs." Every part of the Nuts Bar is there so squirrels can reach the food safely and easily, and sit down to eat it, right outside your window.

Why it's different

  • Overhanging roof keeps the tray dry, so food doesn't go mouldy
  • Four wooden "bar stools" at just the right height to reach straight into the tray. Squirrels sit in a row like regulars at the bar
  • Solid back board: mounted flat to a fence or tree, so nothing can approach from behind
  • No wire or mesh for claws or teeth to catch on, and a smooth tray that wipes clean in a minute
  • Deep front tray holds several handfuls, so one morning top-up lasts
  • Ventilation slots under the food chamber let air circulate, so damp dries out instead of pooling under the nuts
  • Corn cob spike for an entertaining occasional treat
  • Stainless steel water bowl: frost-proof and easy to rinse
  • Flame-treated wood with a smoky grain and "Nuts Bar" engraving

Specifications

Dimensions 32.8 cm (H) x 37 cm (W) x 17.5 cm (D)
Material Flame-treated wood, stainless steel bowl
Weight 1 lb
Mounting Pre-drilled back board for fence, wall, shed or tree
Included Feeding station, water bowl, corn cob spike

Where to put it

  • 1.5–2 m off the ground, close to trees or hedges for cover
  • Within view of a kitchen or living-room window, so you can watch the regulars
  • Away from spots where cats can lie in wait

What to feed

  • Best: hazelnuts in shells, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts
  • Treats: corn cob, apple or carrot slices
  • Avoid: salted or roasted nuts, bread, bulk peanuts
Have red squirrels nearby? Offer hazelnuts in shells first, clean the tray and bowl weekly with hot water and a mild pet-safe disinfectant (squirrelpox, carried by greys, is deadly to reds), and report any grey sightings to your local red squirrel group.
Final batch. Geoff retires at Christmas, and this is the last run of Nuts Bars from his workshop. Only 240 left, with no restock. Order by 15 November to have it up while squirrels are still learning where the food is.

The Last Winter

Geoff Hartley has been a joiner in Sedbergh for 46 years. His wife Ann has looked after injured and orphaned squirrels for decades, and her notebooks showed him the problem: mild, wet winters leave squirrels with an empty larder by the third week of January. She drew the first Nuts Bar on the back of an envelope, and he built it that weekend. Now Geoff is retiring at Christmas. This is his last batch — 240 are left in the barn, and when those are gone, there are no more.

What gardeners say about Geoff's Nuts Bar

This is Gerald. Second stool from the right, quarter past eight, every afternoon.

Derek H., Harrogate

Second week of January, first hard frost, and look at the tracks on the lawn. I often see the squirrels here

Helen R., Shrewsbury

Put it up for Mum, who's 82. She rings me with squirrel news now.

Karen T., Cheltenham

Roof, a tray you can actually clean, water, off the ground. The squirrels accepted this very well.

How is it made?

Geoff builds each Nuts Bar to Ann's design: a tall back board that fixes flat to a fence, wall or tree, a gabled roof that keeps the rain off, a food chamber with a clear front and ventilation slots underneath so the nuts stay dry, four little round stools at just the right height, a corn cob spike and a stainless steel water bowl. The wood is flame-treated for a dark, weather-resistant finish, and every one is checked by hand before it is packed.
