Gerhard's Nutcracker Candle Holder
Gerhard’s Nutcracker Candle Holder
Turned, carved and finished entirely by hand from solid radiata pine, the windbreak his father planted along the vines in 1953. A real candle holder, and a piece you keep for good.
“When this pine is gone, the lathe gets a cover.”
The last of his father’s pines
Heinz Kleemann came out from Germany’s Ore Mountains in 1952 with a painted wooden soldier in his suitcase. The next year he planted a row of radiata pines along the northern edge of the family’s vineyard block outside Tanunda.
When the soldier broke in 1976, his son Gerhard turned him a new one, and has turned at least one every year since. In October 2023 a spring storm brought the whole windbreak down. These nutcrackers are turned from the last of those trunks. There won’t be more.
Gerhard KleemannEvery step, by one pair of hands
-
I
Turned
Head, body, legs and hat turned from blocks of radiata pine on his old lathe.
-
II
Carved
Crown points, jaw and joints shaped by hand with knife and gouge.
-
III
Painted or stained
Every brush stroke on the soldier, every coat of stain on the king.
-
IV
Checked and wrapped
Sanded smooth, checked for cracks, wrapped in tissue at the kitchen table.
Pick one up and you feel it: light, warm, smooth wood. Nothing cold, nothing hollow, nothing plastic.
Two nutcrackers, one pair of hands
The Painted Soldier
The one his father carried out from Germany: red coat, green trousers, a gold crown with small red jewels and a JOY sign in his hand.
- Hand-painted in red, green, black and gold
- Soft white beard and hair
- Candle stands in the open top of his hat
The Natural Pine King
The same turning without paint. A deep walnut stain lets the grain of the pine show through.
- Walnut-stained radiata pine, satin finish
- Jointed arms, square stepped base
- Candle stands in a brass cup in his hand
Turned, not cast
Solid wood, made by hand
Head, body, legs and hat are each turned and carved from pine and fitted together by hand. No resin, no mould, no seam down the side.
A candle that stands straight
Made to hold a standard 22 mm dinner candle upright, so the wax stays off the coat and off your tablecloth.
Feels like an heirloom
Warm and smooth in the hand, satin finish, no sharp edges. Grain and brush strokes differ from piece to piece.
Made to last
If it ever gets knocked off the sideboard, wood can be glued. Resin can’t.
“You can feel the turning rings under the paint, and the candle cup is actually deep enough to use. That’s the old way of making them.”

Candles and care
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from curtains, greenery, open windows on a windy evening and the painted soldier’s beard. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, no water or polish. Because each piece is turned by hand, sizes can vary slightly.

What Gerhard's customers are saying
Opened the box on the lounge and said oh out loud. The painted one is real wood, light and warm in your hands, not that cold heavy resin our old shop one was made of. He went straight on the sideboard and the grandkids have been moving him around the lounge room all week. Not a chip on him.

Ordered the natural pine one for myself. You can see the grain right through the stain and the brass cup is solid. No candle in the box, which they say up front. An ordinary dinner candle from the supermarket stands dead straight in it.

Got the natural one for the front hall. My husband was a carpenter for forty years and the first thing he did was turn it over and look at the grain. He said that's turned on a lathe, not glued together out of a kit. It's taller than I pictured, which I like, and it goes with everything.

Bought both for our two daughters so they'd each have one when they've got their own places. They came wrapped in tissue, not a chip or a scratch. The painted one is smaller than the natural one, and the sizes are right there in the description.

I collect nutcrackers and most new ones are resin now. This one is light and warm in the hand and you can feel the turning rings under the paint. The beard is soft and the little red jewels on the crown are a nice touch.

Turned up in two days and packed carefully. We lit the candle in it for Christmas Eve tea, sun still going down outside, and the whole table went quiet for a second. Ordering another one for my sister before they're gone.

Every nutcracker is turned by hand on the lathe from solid radiata pine, the windbreak Gerhard's father planted along the vines in 1953. Head, body, legs and hat are turned as separate pieces and fitted together. The painted soldier is painted by hand in red, green, black and gold. The natural pine king is stained a deep walnut brown and holds a brass candle cup. Both take a standard 22 mm dinner candle (not included). Never leave a burning candle unattended.
