Glenys' Handmade Cat Rug
Handmade in Deloraine, Tasmania
Glenys Harcourt, 73. Retired schoolteacher and rug maker from the Meander Valley. Has been making rugs by hand since she was eight years old — the way her grandmother taught her. Available in two shapes — half-moon or rectangular. The workshop closes on 1 November. The last finished rugs ship until they're gone — this is her final collection.
Maker's Tag
Glenys
For most of my life, they were just for the house — for family, for friends, for the odd craft fair. I never sold one online until I was seventy. Now they have to go somewhere — and I'd like them to go to people who'll actually live with them.

Why This Rug
Six Things You Won't Find on a Factory-Made Cat Rug
Every detail below comes out of sixty-five years of making rugs the way her grandmother first taught her in the summer of 1961. Nothing here is an accident.
Real Wool Pile — Not a Print
The seven cats are made fibre by fibre from real wool. The colours, whiskers, and expressions are in the wool itself — not heat-pressed on top of a flat synthetic mat. They won't peel, crack, or wash off, because there's nothing on the surface to come off.
Seven Hand-Stitched Cats
Each of the seven cats is individually stitched into the rug — plum, saffron, charcoal, black, white, mint, and orange. Every whisker stands up from the surface. You can feel each cat under your bare feet on a cold morning.
Non-Slip Cotton-Poly Backing
A bonded cotton-poly underside keeps the rug in place on timber floorboards, tiles, or laminate. No slipping. No curling at the corners after a week. No bunching at the door.
Generously Sized — Two Shapes
At 90 × 60 cm, the rug is sized for the places people actually live with one — a hallway, a kitchen, in front of a chair, beside the bed. Available in two shapes — half-moon or classic rectangle. Same size in both.
Machine Washable on Cool
Made for real life with cats and muddy gumboots. The cotton-poly construction goes through a cool, gentle wash when accidents happen — and they will. Lay flat to dry. No tumble drying. Comes out looking like the day it arrived.
Final Collection — Roughly 400 Remaining
Glenys closes the workshop on 1 November. The 400 finished rugs on her shelves are the last that will ever come out of the Harcourt workshop. They ship until they're gone. No reorders. No second runs.
A Letter Glenys Keeps in Her Biscuit Tin
"Dear Mrs Harcourt — I lost my cat Mabel of seventeen years in February. I ordered your rug because the seven little cats on it looked like every cat I'd ever loved, all together at once. It sits in front of my bed now. My new cat, Toast, sleeps on it every single night. I think she knows. Thank you for making something that holds that much."
A longtime customer — one of dozens of handwritten letters Glenys has kept in an old biscuit tin since 2023.

Glenys's 30-Day Return Policy

A Note From the Workshop
Glenys makes every rug by hand, one at a time, in the stone workshop behind her cottage in Deloraine, Tasmania. Because each rug is made by hand, slight variations in colour, the position of the cats, and the texture of the wool are a natural part of how each one turns out. These are not flaws. This is what handmade looks like.
To keep the rug at its best: machine wash on a cool, gentle wash when needed. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Treat it gently and it will outlast most of what you own.

Message from the Artist:
After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.
We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.
