Gord's Handmade Bronze Bird Bath
Cast in solid bronze in an old maple sugar shack on Lake Superior
Gord Ferrier, 72, poured metal at the steel plant in Sault Ste. Marie for 38 years. Now he casts one thing: a bronze bird bath, so backyard birds have water when everything else is frozen. His eyes can no longer read the colour of the melt. These are his last 47.
“It was minus 34 on the porch and the chickadees were eating snow off my deck rail. The feeder was full. They didn’t want it. They wanted a drink.”
Gord Ferrier · Goulais River, Ontario

What makes Gord’s bird bath special
Each figure comes out of one pour of solid bronze. Just over three kilos, so it won’t blow over in a November gale.
Concrete and ceramic crack when they freeze. Bronze doesn’t soak up water, so it can stay outside all winter.
Shallow on purpose, so chickadees and juncos drink and bathe safely. A kettle of warm water fills it in seconds.
No paint, no chemicals. Every piece sits out through one Lake Superior winter until the soft green grows on its own.
Warm water in winter, rainwater from spring to fall. It looks better every year it stands outside.
Gord files every leaf edge himself. No two figures are exactly alike.
“People keep their feeders full all winter and forget about water. When every pond is frozen, a small bird has to eat snow, and melting it costs body heat it needs to get through the night. A shallow bowl of open water, even for an hour in the morning, makes a real difference to chickadees and nuthatches.”
Dr. Laura Brennan · Wildlife biologist · Volunteer for the winter backyard bird count in Northern Ontario
Perfect for
Why Gord’s bird bath lasts
- Solid cast metal. Heavy and stable, it won’t blow over or crack in the frost.
- Natural patina. The green finish deepens with every season outside.
- Shallow, safe water. Never deep enough to be a danger to small birds.
- Easy to clean. Tip out, brush, refill. Ice simply lifts out.
- Checked one by one. Every figure is inspected in Gord’s workshop before it leaves.
If Gord’s bird bath doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. He would rather have it back than see it sit in a garage.
Tip from Gord: The bowl is not heated. On a cold morning, pour in warm (not boiling) water and set it in a sunny spot near a shrub or spruce, so the birds have cover close by. It stays open for a while, often about an hour. From spring to fall, just keep it topped up.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the workshop:
Gord Ferrier poured metal in the foundry of the steel plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, for 38 years. One January morning, with minus 34 on his porch thermometer and the creek frozen solid, he watched the chickadees eat snow off his deck rail while the feeder sat full. They weren’t hungry. They were thirsty. So he cast a seated girl whose leafy dress becomes a shallow bowl, and let each one weather to green through a Lake Superior winter on his woodpile. Bronze doesn’t crack in the frost, so it can stay outside all year. Gord has always judged a pour by the colour of the melt, and now macular degeneration is taking the centre of his sight. 47 figures from his final pour are left in his old sugar shack. When the ice comes in on Goulais Bay, the furnace goes cold for good.

What people say about Gord's bronze bird baths
I put it by the back steps in November. The chickadees found it the next morning, and now there are three at the bowl most days.

On cold mornings I pour in warm water from the kettle. The nuthatch is hanging off the leaves before I’m back inside.

Heavier and finer than the photos suggest. Under our old maple it looks like it has always been there.

Our old bird bath was too deep and the little ones never used it. This one has juncos in it every morning now.

Two pine grosbeaks showed up the first week of January. You can tell a person made this, not a machine.

Arrived beautifully packed. It was out on the deck within ten minutes, and I ordered a second one for my sister in Halifax.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Gord packs each mould with sand by hand and pours the metal in a single pour, so the figure is one solid piece with no glued seams. He files every leaf edge himself. Then each figure stands outside through one Lake Superior winter, and snow and frost grow the soft green patina on their own, with no paint or chemicals. Every piece is checked in his workshop before it leaves. Bronze doesn’t soak up water, so it won’t crack in a Canadian winter. Small differences from figure to figure are part of the charm.
