Gwen's Cosy-Glow Moggy Lamp
Painted by hand in a little workshop above the canal in Hebden Bridge
Gwen Ashby, 68, has made lamps in West Yorkshire since 1989. Arthritis is ending her fine work — these are the last Moggy Lamps she will ever make.
“People always wanted something with a bit of soul. So I made a lamp that looks like a little cat keeping watch over the room. After 36 years I’m closing the workshop — and I’d like every last one to go to a home where it’s loved.”
Gwen Ashby · Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire

What makes Gwen’s Moggy Lamp special
Deep blue, amber and gold panels framed by dark lines — like a little stained-glass window. Switched on, the whole body glows from within.
Big green eyes shine out of the dark face, framed by tall pointed ears. It really does look like a cat keeping watch.
The LED sits deep inside, so the light comes softly through the panels. Cosy and easy on the eyes — never harsh.
Plug into any USB plug or socket and flick the little switch on the cable. No fiddly wiring, no bulbs, no batteries.
A flat round base keeps it firmly in place on a bedside table, windowsill or sideboard.
Every panel painted and checked one by one in Gwen’s workshop. Small differences from piece to piece are part of the charm.
“Most decorative lamps are made to be looked at for a week. Gwen’s cats are made to be lived with. The light is placed so it glows through the panels rather than at you, which is exactly what you want in a bedroom or reading corner in the evening. It is a lovely example of a craft that is quietly disappearing in Britain.”

Perfect for
Why a Moggy Lamp lasts
- LED inside. Runs cool and lasts for years — nothing to replace.
- Safe low voltage. USB powered, so it is fine for bedrooms and children’s rooms.
- Sturdy body. A solid moulded body with painted panels — not thin glass that chips.
- Switch on the cable. Turn it on and off without reaching behind furniture.
- Checked one by one. Every lamp is switched on and inspected before it leaves the workshop.
If your Moggy Lamp doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Gwen would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.
Please note the size. The Moggy Lamp is a small, cosy lamp — about 17 cm tall and 10 cm wide, roughly the height of a coffee mug. It is made to glow softly, not to light a whole room. A USB plug is not included — any phone charger plug works.
