The Bywater · New Orleans

Forged in a borrowed bay at a New Orleans ironworks

Hank Doyle, 78, forged balconies, gates and lantern brackets across the French Quarter for 53 years. He built the first bookshelf lantern in 2022 for his wife Maggie. Worn joints in both hands have ended his time at the anvil. These 284 lanterns are his last.

“

“Nobody hangs a lantern to see by. You hang it so the place looks lived in. Maggie ran a bookshop on Magazine Street for forty-one years with my lantern over the door. When she moved somewhere she couldn't drive a nail, I built her a small one for the shelf. The first night she switched it on, she said, there, the shop's open.”

Hank Doyle · New Orleans, Louisiana

What comes in the box

The lantern

Black metal frame, clear panes, on its chain

The bracket

Scrollwork arm with fleur-de-lis tips

The stand plate

Stands on its own between two books

Warm bulb

Amber LED, already fitted

Six things 53 years at the anvil taught Hank

I The Between-the-Books Stand

The plate stands on its own. Slide it between two books like one more volume. No drill, no hook, no hole in the wall.

II The Magazine Street Bracket

The scroll and the fleur-de-lis are copied from the bracket Hank hung over Maggie's shop door in 1980.

III The Street-Lamp Glow

One warm amber bulb behind the glass. The light falls low across the spines. “White light makes a bookcase look like a store shelf.”

IV The Real Chain

The lantern hangs from a small metal chain, the way the ones over French Quarter doors do.

V No Cord, No Outlet

It runs on small button-cell batteries. No cord to hide and nothing across the floor.

VI The Shelf Size

11.8 inches tall and 2 inches deep. Made for a bookcase, a mantel or a windowsill, not a catalog page.

“No nails, no candles, no cords across the floor. That's the card on almost every door I've walked through in senior living. Nearly everything that makes a room feel like home breaks one of those three rules. People move in with a whole life and get told to keep it off the walls.”

Denise Carter · Occupational therapist in senior living · 29 years in Jefferson Parish

Perfect for

A mother who moved somewhere smaller
Apartments with no-nail rules
A shelf of old favorites
Evenings with the TV off
Rentals where you can't drill
A mantel or windowsill
Gift for someone who downsized
Anyone who misses New Orleans

Why Hank's lanterns stand apart

  • Iron, not plastic. The bracket, the stand plate and the lantern frame are metal, finished in black.
  • Nothing to install. No screws, no tools, no drilling. It stands where you put it.
  • Warm, not white. The amber glow reads like a street lamp, not like a shop display.
  • One design since 2022. Maggie's first lantern still stands on the bookcase in Hank's apartment.
  • Checked by hand. Hank looked over every lantern at the ironworks before it went into the box.

If it doesn't make the room feel different, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. No forms, no questions. Hank would rather have it back than have it sit in a box.

Hank's one tip

Stand it at eye level, on the shelf you see from your chair, and switch the ceiling light off. It runs on button-cell batteries, which are not included. Switch it on after supper and off at bedtime, and the batteries last longer.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

800+ Happy Customers

Excellent 4.9

What Hank's customers are saying

I'll admit I almost skipped this because I figured it'd be one of those flimsy battery lights that looks nothing like the pictures. It's actually heavier and better built than I expected, sits rock solid on my shelf and doesn't budge even when my cat brushes past it. The light is warm and soft, not that cold white glow you get with a lot of cheap LEDs. Showed up in about 6 days and the box was packed really well.

Wasn't sure if this would actually throw enough light to notice or if it'd just be a cute decoration that does nothing. Turns out it gives off a really nice warm glow in the evenings, enough to notice from across the room without being harsh. Arrived quicker than I thought, maybe 5 days, and it was wrapped up really carefully so nothing got scratched.

I've bought a few of these battery lantern type decor pieces before and most of them feel cheap once you hold them. This one has actual weight to the metal and the finish looks like real wrought iron, not painted plastic. Setup was just standing it up between my books, took two minutes total. Only wish I'd ordered a second one for the other end of the shelf from the start.

At 67 I don't have patience for anything complicated so this was a relief, no wiring no drilling, it just stands there like a bookend and lights up on its own timer. Battery has held up well, I'm going on two months now without swapping it out. My daughter saw it on a video call and asked me to send her the link before we'd even hung up.

My wife picked this out and I was skeptical it would just end up being clutter but it's grown on me fast. No cords, no outlets to hide, you just set it on the shelf and it runs off the battery for weeks at a time. The ironwork looks a lot more detailed in person than I expected from the photos. Would've ordered sooner if I knew it was this easy to set up.

Bought this for my reading nook and honestly wasn't expecting much given the price, figured it'd look cheap up close. It's actually really charming in person, the little lantern glow is soft and warm and not annoying at night like some LED stuff can be. Shipping was smooth, tracking updated the whole way and it got here in under a week.
