Hand-turned from solid cedar in a tin-roof shed in the Missouri Ozarks

Harlan Doss, 73, graded cedar at a sawmill for 38 years and has made woodpecker logs since 1997. Arthritis in both wrists has ended the drilling — this is his final batch.

“In January 1997 a little downy woodpecker pecked at my bare fence post for three days. There was nothing in that wood for him. So I drilled a hole in a leftover post and packed it with fat. The next morning there were three woodpeckers on it. That first log still hangs by my kitchen window.”

What comes in the box

🪵The cedar log

16 in tall, solid cedar

☂️Rain cap

Round cedar lid, already fitted

🪝Hanging hook

Metal hook, already fitted

🕳️Six feeding pockets

Pre-drilled, ready to fill

Six things 29 winters taught Harlan

🌳The Tree-Trunk Stance

An upright 16-inch log. Woodpeckers cling to it and lean on their tail, just like on a real tree. It doesn’t swing like a wire cage.

☔The Rain Cap

A round cedar lid, wider than the log. Rain runs off and the suet stays dry. “Wet fat goes bad. The birds know it before you do.”

🐦The Six-Pocket Layout

Six round holes on two sides. Several birds can eat at once without pushing each other off.

🪵The Heartwood Rule

Solid cedar, no paint, no glue. Cedar keeps rot away on its own. “Cedar doesn’t need paint. Paint needs cedar.”

⏱️Press-and-Go Refill

Push a suet plug, a suet ball or a piece of suet cake into a hole. About ten seconds. No cage to open.

🪝The One-Hook Hang

A sturdy metal hook on top. A branch, a shepherd’s hook or the edge of a porch roof will do.

“Woodpeckers are built to climb a trunk and brace with their tail. An upright log gives them exactly that. Put a lid on it to keep the suet dry, and you have the feeder they would pick for themselves. On my bird walks, the yards with a log like this are the ones where I hear the knocking.”

Why Harlan’s logs last

  • Solid cedar. The wood Harlan graded for 38 years. It stands up to rain and weathers to a soft silver-gray.
  • No paint, no glue. Nothing on the wood that birds could pick at.
  • A real rain cap. The lid overhangs the log, so the suet in the holes stays dry.
  • One design since 1997. Harlan’s first log has hung by his kitchen window for 29 winters.
  • Checked by hand. Harlan looked over every log in his shed before it went into the box.
🛡️ 30-day return guarantee

If the woodpeckers don’t take to it, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. No forms, no questions — Harlan would rather have it back than have it sit in a garage.

Harlan’s one tip. Hang the log 5 to 6 feet high, near a tree or bushes, where you can see it from a window. Suet is not included — any standard suet plugs, balls or pieces of suet cake fit the holes. Give the birds a week to find it.

The Last Winter

A note from the shed:

Harlan Doss graded cedar at the sawmill in Birch Tree, Missouri for 38 years. Since January 1997 he has turned woodpecker logs in a tin-roof shed behind his house outside Eminence — about 1,900 of them. His very first log still hangs on the dogwood by his kitchen window, 29 winters later. Arthritis in both wrists means he can no longer hold the drill steady for the six feeding holes, and his doctor has told him to stop. There will be no further run — the 83 logs left in the shed are the last.

How is it made?

Harlan picks each piece of cedar himself — the wood he graded at the sawmill for 38 years. He turns the log round on his old lathe, drills the six feeding holes, fits the round cedar rain cap and screws in the metal hook. No paint, no glue: cedar keeps rot away on its own. Harlan checked every log in his shed before it went into the box. No two are exactly alike.
