Thrown by hand in Fort Valley, Georgia since 1981

Hattie Lassiter, 73, made her first fruit fly jar for her mama’s windowsill in the middle of peach country. 6,300 jars later, arthritis has stopped her wheel. These are her last 186.

“Mama kept a glass jar of vinegar on the windowsill and threw a dish towel over it every time company came. So I made her one she didn’t have to hide. From the outside, it’s the prettiest thing on the counter.”

What makes Hattie’s jar different

🔽The One-Way Funnel

A small clay funnel sits in the lid. Fruit flies follow the smell of the vinegar down through the hole and can’t find their way back out.

🪓The Lid That Hides Everything

Solid glazed clay you can’t see through. From the outside it looks like a sugar bowl. Nobody needs to know what’s inside.

🍎The Pantry Recipe

Apple cider vinegar and one drop of dish soap. No poison, no spray. Safe next to the fruit bowl, the grandkids and the dog.

🌊The Georgia Sky Glaze

Blue brushed over red-clay brown by hand. The glaze runs differently in every firing, so no two jars look alike.

♻️Use It for Years

Rinse it out once a week and fill it again. No refills to buy, no cartridges, nothing to throw away.

🎁A Gift People Actually Use

Bought for daughters, new homes and every friend who has ever complained about flies on the bananas.

“Fruit flies find ripe fruit and vinegar by smell from across the room. A narrow funnel lets them in, but they fly upward toward the light to get out, and inside a closed jar there is no light to follow. The drop of dish soap matters too: it breaks the surface of the liquid, so they sink instead of resting on top. Hattie’s jar does exactly what the old vinegar jars on Southern windowsills did, without anybody having to look at it.”

Why Hattie’s jar lasts

  • Real stoneware. Heavy and solid, not plastic, not thin glass.
  • Thrown on the wheel. Jar, lid and funnel are each shaped by hand.
  • Fired twice. Once to harden the clay, once to seal the glaze.
  • Stands steady. A wide round base that won’t tip on the counter.
  • Made to be used. Mama Ida used the very first one every summer for 29 years.
❤️ 30-day money-back guarantee

If the flies aren’t gone from your fruit bowl, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Hattie would rather have it back than have it sit in a cupboard.

Good to know: Every jar is glazed by hand, so the blue and brown fall a little differently on each one. No two are exactly alike. Rinse with warm water, hand wash only.

The Last Firing

A note from Fort Valley, Georgia:

Hattie Lassiter has made her fruit fly jars in an old peach-packing shed behind her house since 1981. The very first one was for her mama, Ida, who ran a peach stand for 31 summers and used to hide her glass vinegar jar under a dish towel whenever company came. Every jar, lid and little funnel is shaped on the wheel by hand and glazed by hand — about five hours of work per jar. About 6,300 jars later, arthritis in her thumbs has stopped her wheel. 186 jars are left from her final firing. When they are gone, there will be no more.

What people say about Hattie’s jars

We had flies all over the bananas for weeks. Two days with this jar and they were gone. And I don’t have to look at them, which was the best part.

Verified

Brenda C., Warner Robins, GA

My grandmother had a vinegar jar with a paper funnel on her windowsill. This is the same idea, just beautiful. The blue glaze is even prettier in person.

Verified

Sandra P., Dothan, AL

Bought one for me and one for my daughter’s new house. Heavy, well made, wrapped so well it took me a while to get it out of the box.

Verified

Cheryl W., Greenville, SC

I’ve tried the plastic traps and the sticky paper. This is the first thing that works and that I’m happy to leave out when people come over.

Verified

Debra H., Savannah, GA

Apple cider vinegar and a drop of soap, that’s it. Mine has more blue on it than the photo and I love it.

Verified

Teresa M., Knoxville, TN

Gave it to my mother, who is 84 and keeps a big fruit bowl on the table. She calls it her sugar bowl and won’t tell her friends what’s in it.

Verified

Pamela R., Columbia, SC

We open a bottle of wine and the little flies show up out of nowhere. Not anymore. It sits by the wine glasses now.

How is it made?

Hattie throws each jar, its lid and the little funnel on her potter’s wheel, lets them dry and fires them once. Then she brushes on the blue-over-brown glaze by hand and fires them a second time — about five hours of work per jar. The glaze runs a little differently every time, so no two jars look exactly alike.
