People think fruit comes out of the field clean. It doesn’t. It comes out of a field.

Hilary Hilary Wellard, 34 years on a packhouse line

Why the berries come out clean and whole

NO. 01🌀 The Packhouse Swirl

Water comes in low through the spout, follows the curved wall and starts circling on its own. The berries turn in it, so every side gets rinsed.

NO. 02🍓 Gentle on Raspberries

No hard stream hitting the fruit and no rubbing. The water does the moving, so soft berries keep their shape.

NO. 03🍃 Leaves & Grit Go Out

Loose dirt, leaves and little bugs go out with the water through the holes around the cone. The berries stay in the bowl.

NO. 04✋ Spout Set by Hand

Hilary sets every spout herself, upright on the side of the bowl, and tests every bowl under the tap before it is dispatched.

NO. 05🥄 One Handful at a Time

Sized for one serving. Wash only what you’re about to eat, so the rest of the punnet stays dry in the fridge.

NO. 06🍽️ Sink to Table

It drains on its own and goes straight to the table as a serving bowl. Each glaze is dipped by hand.

Deep Cobalt

A quick rinse or Hilary’s bowl?

Rinse under the tap Hilary’s bowl
Water ✗ Hits the top berries, runs straight out ✓ Circles around the whole handful
Soft fruit ✗ Raspberries get crushed ✓ Berries ride in water and stay whole
Your hands ✗ Shaking, turning, rubbing ✓ Hands-free, just turn on the tap
Dirt & bugs ✗ Often stay on the bottom berries ✓ Go out with the water
Afterwards ✗ Wet punnet back in the fridge ✓ Drains, goes straight to the table
Material ✗ Plastic punnet or colander ✓ Hand-glazed ceramic
What the food safety expert says

“Most fresh berries are packed right in the field, without being washed. The best thing you can do at home is rinse them gently under cool running water just before you eat them, and only as many as you need. Washing the whole container ahead of time adds moisture, and that speeds up mould.”

Dr Helen Ashworth, Food Safety Scientist, Reading, Berkshire

Perfect for

🫐 Berry-loving kids & grandchildren 🍓 Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries 🍅 Cherry tomatoes & grapes ✋ Hands that don’t like scrubbing 🌿 Plastic-free kitchens 🎁 Christmas presents for the kitchen 🧺 Farmers’ market regulars

Hilary’s checklist

  • Real ceramic: thrown on the wheel and high-fired. Not plastic, won’t warp.
  • Hand-set spout: upright on the side, so the water comes in low and circles.
  • Pierced cone: water drains, berries stay in.
  • One-serving size: wash only what you’ll eat.
  • Tested: every bowl runs under the studio tap before it’s wrapped.
🛡️

90-Day “It Has to Swirl at Your Sink” Guarantee

If it doesn’t work at your tap, or you just don’t love it, send us a short email within 90 days and you get your money back.

Good to know: The bowl is about 13 cm across and holds one good handful at a time. It needs a steady stream of cold water into the spout. A very weak trickle won’t get the water circling. Rinsing with water helps remove loose dirt, leaves and insects. It does not remove residues inside the fruit. Every glaze is dipped by hand, so colour and shape vary a little from bowl to bowl.

The Autumn Firing

A note from the studio:

Hilary Wellard worked the washing and grading lines at a fruit packhouse outside Faversham, Kent, for 34 years. She learned there that fruit is moved in water, not blasted with it, and that most berries are packed in the field without ever being washed. When her granddaughter Isla started eating berries straight from the punnet, Hilary threw a small bowl in the old apple store behind her cottage and set a spout on it, so the tap water would circle the way it did in the packhouse. The bowls sold at the Saturday market in Sheldwich for two summers. The market is closed until May, and the bowls left from the September firing are all there is until spring.

What people say about Hilary’s berry bowls

Customer photo of the berry washing bowl

My two-year-old would live on blueberries if I let her. She stands on her step stool and watches them go round and round, then eats them straight out of the bowl. I thought it might be a gimmick but there was actual grit in the bottom the first time. Glad I got it.

Bought it for my wife and I end up using it more than she does. It’s heavy, proper pottery, not one of those plastic things. Strawberries in, cold tap on, done. The cobalt looks even better in person.

Smaller than I expected, so check the size before you order. It takes one big handful at a time, which suits me fine as I only wash what I’m about to eat. Raspberries come out whole every single time. Ordering two more for my sisters for Christmas.

I was the bloke in the comments saying these waste water. It’s about half a minute of cold water for a bowl of berries, less than I used to run through the colander. Now my kids fight over who gets to wash the fruit, so I call that a win.

Did a punnet of supermarket raspberries this morning and there was a little leaf and some sand left in the bowl when they came out. Those were supposedly ready to eat. Works fine on our ordinary kitchen tap.

Came wrapped really well and arrived quicker than I expected. The blue glaze looks just like the photos, maybe prettier. It sits on the table with fruit in it most days, so it doesn’t feel like one more gadget in a drawer.

How is it made?

Hilary throws each bowl on the wheel herself, then shapes the spout and sets it by hand, upright on the side of the bowl, so the water comes in low, catches the wall and circles instead of pouring straight through. After the first firing she dips each bowl in one of four glazes and fires it again. Before it is wrapped, Hilary runs every bowl under the studio tap to make sure the water swirls. No two are identical.
