Rain-proof seed dish · Final batch from Cumbria

Horace’s Covered Bird Feeder

An open dish with its own little roof, so the birds that can’t cling to a tube feeder (robins, blackbirds, dunnocks, wrens) still find dry seed after a week of rain.

What it changes in your garden

Three reasons the birds keep coming back.

Dry seed, whatever the weather

Rain runs off the roof and sleet slides off the edge. The seed underneath stays dry instead of turning to porridge on an open table.

The birds a tube leaves out

Robins, blackbirds and dunnocks eat standing up. An open dish lets them feed at eye level, off the wet lawn and out of reach of the cat.

Cleaner, safer feeding

Damp seed goes mouldy within days and spreads disease among garden birds. A small, dry dish you rinse each morning is the simplest fix there is.

Who you’ll see at it

Ground-feeding garden birds that rarely use a tube feeder, plus the regulars.

Bird table vs. covered dish

After a wet week in November.

Open bird table Horace’s covered dish
The seed Soggy, sprouting, mouldy Dry under the roof
Ground birds Yes, if it’s dry All winter, standing in the dish
Cleaning Scrape and scrub Tip, rinse, hang: 30 seconds
Summer Turns green in the sun A shaded water dish

One dish, all year

Use it for whatever the birds need most right now.

October to April

Dry seed

Sunflower hearts, a seed mix or dried mealworms. The roof keeps rain and sleet off. Fill a thin layer each morning.

May to September

Fresh water

Swill it out and fill it with water. The roof keeps the dish in shade, so the water stays cooler and cleaner for longer.

Two roof shapes

Same roof idea, two looks. Many customers hang one of each, a yard or so apart.

The Umbrella

A ribbed umbrella canopy over a deep, round dish. Weathered rust finish, chain and S-hook.

Dish 17 cm · 36 cm tall

The Cottage Roof

A pitched roof on four slim posts. Rain runs off both sides like a slate roof. Weathered rust finish, chain and S-hook.

Dish 12 cm · 41 cm tall

“Forty-four years I kept the rain off other people’s heads. Never once thought about the robin.”

The Week Keswick Flooded

A note from Horace:

After Storm Desmond in December 2015, my wife Maureen’s bird table was a tray of grey mush for a week, and the robin sat on the wall and stared at it. Forty-four years I kept the rain off other people’s heads. That afternoon I folded a little roof for the robin.

My shoulders won’t take the bender any more. These are the last 112 roofs I cut. When they’re gone, the workshop becomes a shed.

What Horace's customers are saying

Customer photo: Margaret with her Cottage Roof feeder

Hung it in the apple tree on Saturday and it rained solidly all Sunday, as it does. The robin was in it all afternoon eating dry seed under that little roof. My old bird table would have been porridge. Had to take a selfie to show my daughter.

Customer photo: hanging The Umbrella in a Cheshire garden

Bob took this while I was hanging it, I'm smiling because a blue tit was already sat in the cherry tree waiting. It's smaller than I pictured, about the size of a cereal bowl under a brolly, which suits our garden. Lovely weathered finish.

Customer photo: Cottage Roof feeder through a kitchen window

Snapped through the kitchen window, so excuse the rain on the glass. The cottage one is on a bracket by the back door and the tits haven't left it alone. Rain runs straight off the roof. I rinse it under the outside tap every morning, takes seconds.

Customer photo: thumbs up beside The Umbrella feeder

Not one for selfies but the wife insisted. Hung it from the pergola and the robin's taken it over, sees the others off. Well made, heavy enough that it doesn't spin about in the wind. You can tell a proper tradesman made it.

Customer photo: watching the Cottage Roof feeder from the window with tea

Mum is 88 and can't get down the garden now. We hung the cottage one outside her bedroom window and she gives us a full report every morning, robin first. She says it's better than the telly. Worth every penny.

Customer photo: The Umbrella on a Manchester balcony

Third-floor flat, just a balcony. Hooked the Umbrella over the railing bracket. Within a week I had blue tits, and a very fat wood pigeon who sits next to it plotting. It can't fit under the roof. Best £29 I've spent in Manchester.

How are your products made?

Every roof is cut from flat sheet in Horace’s workshop in Braithwaite, Cumbria, folded over a stake and riveted to its hanger by hand. The dish is raised by hand and the chain and hook are fitted at the bench. Both shapes, the Umbrella and the Cottage Roof, have a weathered rust finish. Use it for seed through the autumn and winter and for water from May; rinse it with plain water every morning.
