Knitted by Hand in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire

Ilga Berzins, 66, has knitted slipper socks on the top floor of the old Calder Bank Mill since 1985, in the two-strand method her grandmother brought from Latvia in 1947. The mill has been sold to a property developer. These 609 pairs are the last ones she will ever make.

A foot doesn’t stay warm because of fuzz. It stays warm because of the air you trap. That’s the whole secret, and it takes twice the time.

Ilga Ilga Berzins, 41 years at the Calder Bank Mill

What makes them different

NO. 01🧶 Two-Strand Knit

Every row is knitted with two strands at once. The result is a double layer with warm air trapped in between.

NO. 02☁️ Plush Lining, All the Way Down

A soft, fleece-like lining in the cuff and the foot, so nothing cold touches your skin.

NO. 03🐾 Grip-Dot Soles

Silicone dots on the bottom for wooden floors, tiles and stairs. No more sliding across the kitchen.

NO. 04✨ Cable-Knit Foot

Diamond cables on top add another layer of wool exactly where the cold comes through.

NO. 05🧣 A Cuff That Stays Put

The lined cuff holds at the ankle, so they don’t slip off when you put your feet up.

NO. 06✋ Finished by Ilga

She knits the star band, turns the heels and checks every pair herself before it is boxed.

What the textile expert says

“Stranded knitting is one of the oldest ways to make a garment warmer without making it heavier. The strand that isn’t being used travels along the back of the work, so you get a second layer and still air between the two. That’s why traditional winter mittens and socks from the Baltic and Scandinavia were knitted this way. It is also roughly twice the work, which is why you almost never see it in mass-produced slippers.”

Dr Helen Marchetti, Textile Conservator, York

Perfect for

❄️ Cold wooden & tiled floors 🌙 Night shifts & early mornings 🔥 Evenings by the wood burner 🏡 Draughty old houses & cottages 🦶 Always-cold toes 🎁 Christmas presents for the whole family 👵 Grandparents who are always cold

Ilga’s checklist

  • Knitted by hand: star band, heels and toes by Ilga herself.
  • Double layer: two strands in every row, warm air in between.
  • Plush lining: soft against the skin, cuff to toes.
  • Grip-dot soles: safe on wooden floors, tiles and stairs.
  • Wool blend: warm and springy, without the itch.
  • Checked: every pair pulled on and inspected before it is boxed.

90-Day “Warm Feet or Your Money Back” Guarantee

Wear them all winter. If they don’t keep your feet warm, or you simply don’t love them, send us a short email within 90 days and you get your money back.

Good to know: The knit stretches, so if you are between two sizes, pick the larger one for a roomier fit or the smaller one for a snug fit. Every pair is knitted by hand, so the star band can vary a little from pair to pair. For care, we recommend a gentle cold hand wash and drying flat, away from the radiator.

The Final Sale

A note from the Calder Bank Mill:

Ilga Berzins has knitted slipper socks on the top floor of the old Calder Bank Mill in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire since 1985, in the two-strand method her grandmother brought from Latvia in 1947. The mill has been sold and is being turned into luxury flats, and Ilga has to be out by 30 November. Her hands are not up to starting over somewhere new. These 609 pairs are the last ones she and her knitters will ever make. After 30 November they go out from her daughter Kirsty’s garage until the shelf is empty.

When they’re gone, they’re gone.

I opened the box and they’re properly thick. You can see the two strands running along the inside. The sherpa is ever so soft. Cumbrian winter, I’m ready.

My husband says I only take these off for the bath. Warmest thing I own. They stay put when I’ve got my feet up and the grip dots are brilliant on our laminate.

Bought them for the cottage. The stone floors are freezing by morning even with the wood burner going. These keep my feet warm all evening. My wife says I look daft. I don’t care.

I was worried about slipping on our stairs in socks. The little grip dots really work. And they’re so warm I’ve ordered a second pair for my mum.
