Ivor’s Penguin Hand Warmer
Final run · last 1,800 on the shelf
“If it’s cold out of the box, it doesn’t leave my counter.” — Ivor
2
halves, 1 for each hand
20 + 20
hours, up to
3
heat levels
Sold over the same counter since 1946
Ivor Hetherington has stood behind the counter of Hetherington’s on Main Street in Haltwhistle, Northumberland since 1985. His grandfather came down from the Cumbrian fells in 1923 and worked underground at the Haltwhistle pits for twenty-three years, then opened the shop on this corner in 1946: paraffin, stove parts, shovels and nails.
In 2016, after one winter too many of customers complaining that throwaway packets went cold before the second school bus, Ivor tested eleven rechargeable warmers side by side. The penguin was the only one he put on his shelf. A little over 9,000 have gone across his counter in the nine winters since, and the model has not changed once.
The building has been sold and the shop closes on 30 November. These 1,800 are the last ones. Whatever is left keeps going out from Bryony’s garage until the shelf is empty.
— Ivor
“Mrs Telford is the lollipop lady out front. Every week she bought a box of packets from me, and every week they were cold before the second school bus. So I tried eleven rechargeable warmers over a whole winter. This penguin was the only one I’d put on my shelf. I didn’t like the face. She came back for four more.”
— Ivor Hetherington, Hetherington’s, since 1985
What arrives at your door
- 1 penguin hand warmer that splits into 2 separate halves
- Switched on and checked on Ivor’s counter before it is boxed
Why it’s the one on his shelf
No. 01
Two warmers in one
The penguin splits into two halves. Keep one in each pocket, one in each hand, or hand one to whoever is next to you in the stand at the football.
No. 02
Up to 20 + 20 hours
Up to twenty hours per half, and there are two halves. That’s a whole double school-bus run, a full day on the riverbank, or a long day out on the hill.
No. 03
Three heat levels
Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. Three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.
No. 04
USB-C rechargeable
Charges from the same type of cable as most new phones. No more boxes of throwaway packets in the van.
No. 05
Pocket size
8.8 cm tall, 5.6 cm wide. It fits in a coat pocket, inside a glove or in a closed hand.
No. 06
Checked by hand
Every warmer is opened, switched on and run through all three levels on Ivor’s counter before it goes in a parcel.
Throwaway packets or Ivor’s penguin?
| Disposable packets | Ivor’s penguin |
|---|---|
| Used once, then into the bin | Recharged again and again over USB-C |
| A new box every week of winter | One warmer, winter after winter |
| Cold before the second school bus | Up to 20 hours per half, and there are two halves |
| One temperature, whatever it decides | Three heat levels at the press of a button |
| Lumpy and stiff once it is spent | A smooth silver front that warms evenly across your palm |
| One packet, one hand | Splits in two: one for each hand or each pocket |
| Off a factory line, nobody checks it | Switched on and checked on Ivor’s counter before it is posted |
How to use it
- Charge both halves fully before the first use, with a USB-C cable, the same kind most new phones use.
- Press the button once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. The three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.
- Pull the two halves apart if you want two warmers: one in each pocket, or one for whoever is standing next to you.
- Put them back together and charge them overnight, ready for the next cold morning.
Ask Ivor — from behind the counter
“Which setting should I use?”
Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. I start on low and press again when I’m standing still in the wind.
“Why two halves?”
Because you have two hands. And because somebody next to you always forgets their gloves.
“Is it heavy?”
No, but it isn’t flimsy either. It has a bit of weight to it, solid in your hand, and each half still disappears into a closed fist.
“Can I charge it in the car?”
Yes, if your car has a USB port and you have a USB-C cable. It charges the same way your phone does.
“Is it a toy?”
No. The face is silly. I didn’t like it either. Then I watched grown men in waxed jackets pull it out of their pockets and grin. It stays.
From someone who is outside every winter morning
“I’ve been the postman out past Bellingham six days a week for nine winters, and this penguin has been in my coat for all nine. One half lives in my left pocket, the other in my right. My hands are in and out of post boxes all morning, and it’s still warm when I finish the round. The only trouble I’ve had with it is my wife pinching it.”
— Rural postman, out past Bellingham, Northumberland · owner since 2017

A note from the counter:
Hetherington’s has stood on Main Street in Haltwhistle, Northumberland since 1946. The building has been sold, and on 30 November the doors close for good. These 1,800 penguins are the last winter order Ivor will ever place. Every one is opened, switched on and checked on his counter before Bryony packs it.
Whatever is left after 30 November is posted from Bryony’s garage until the shelf is empty.
When they’re gone, they’re gone — and so are we.

What Ivor's customers are saying
Spent more on throwaway packets last winter than this cost me. One half in each pocket for the walk to the post office and it’s still going when I’m back. The penguin face sets my grandchildren off every single time.

I do the dog walk on the fells before work and my fingers used to be done in ten minutes. Charged it Sunday, used it most of the week on low. Splitting it in two was the bit I didn’t know I needed.

Alistair W., Keswick
Bought it for my husband’s fishing. He laughed at the face, took it anyway, and now I can’t get it back off him. Ordering a second so I’ve got my own.

Christine L., Penrith
Fits inside my glove without making it tight. Three levels is plenty, I mostly use the middle one. Arrived quickly and well wrapped.

Wendy T., Harrogate
I’m on the touchline every Saturday for my grandson’s football. Used to be frozen by half time. Now I hold the penguin and swap hands at the break. Small thing, big difference.

Keith M., Durham
Got one each for my daughters for their walks to the bus in Edinburgh. Both sent me a photo of it the first week. USB-C means they actually remember to charge it.
