Pressed by Hand in Lewiston, Maine

Jeannette Pelletier, 73, pressed coconut-fiber doormats for 38 years. Her thumbs can’t pack the fiber tight anymore. These 412 huts are the last she will ever make.

“The birds bring their own warmth. My job is just to keep the wind from taking it.”

– Jeannette Pelletier, making roosting huts since 1994

Why the birds make it to morning

🧱 The Packed-Wall Principle

Fiber laid in by hand, layer after layer, then pressed tight. One door, no gaps. The wind stays outside.

🌨️ The Overhang Roof

The roof reaches past the walls on every side. Snow and rain drip off the edge, not into the entrance.

🐦 The Huddle Size

Only about 8 inches tall on purpose. A small space fills up with the birds’ own warmth. Big boxes stay cold.

🌾 The Fiber Bed

Loose fiber inside for the birds to push into, just like the six chickadees in Jeannette’s flower basket in 1994.

⏳ The Ten-Second Hang

The cotton cord is already tied on. Hang it from a branch, a hook or an eave. No drilling, no tools.

🍂 Hang It in the Fall

Birds pick their winter sleeping spots in late fall. A hut that goes up now gets found before January.

Birdhouse or roost box? Not the same thing

Ordinary birdhouse Jeannette’s roost box
Built for Raising chicks in spring Sleeping through winter nights
Inside Roomy, so a whole brood fits Small, so the birds’ own warmth fills it
Walls Thin boards with air vents and gaps Thick packed coconut fiber, no gaps
Openings Vents to keep chicks cool One door only, no draft
Floor Bare wood Soft bed of loose fiber
When to hang Late winter, before nesting Late fall, before the first hard freeze

“On the coldest nights, small birds like chickadees, wrens and bluebirds look for a sheltered cavity to sleep in. Getting out of the wind makes a real difference, and some species will crowd in together to share body heat. Many modern yards simply have fewer of those natural hiding places left.”

– Dr. Karen Lindqvist, Wildlife Biologist, Orono, Maine

Perfect for

❄️ Helping birds through winter ☕ The view from the kitchen window 🌳 Trees, hooks & porch eaves 🐦 Chickadee, wren & bluebird fans 🏠 Yards without old trees or hedges 🎁 Christmas gifts for bird lovers 👵 Grandparents who love their backyard

Jeannette’s checklist

  • Natural coconut fiber: the same fiber used for doormats that take snow all winter.
  • Tight walls: packed by hand so the wind can’t get through.
  • Overhanging roof: keeps snow and rain away from the door.
  • Small inside: sized so the birds’ own warmth fills it.
  • Ready to hang: cotton cord tied on, no tools needed.

30-Day “Through the Winter” Guarantee

If you are not happy with your hut, send us a short email within 30 days and you get your money back.

Good to know: The hut does not heat anything. It keeps out wind and snow so the birds can hold on to their own warmth. Hang it in a sheltered spot, like under an eave or in a thick tree, with the opening away from the wind. Every hut is pressed by hand, so the shape and fiber vary a little from piece to piece.

The Last Winter

A note from the workshop:

Jeannette Pelletier pressed coconut-fiber doormats at a mat factory on the Androscoggin River in Lewiston, Maine, for 38 years. On January 19, 1994, at 22 below zero, six chickadees flew out of a forgotten flower basket with a coconut-fiber liner on her porch. They had made it through the night inside. That week she pressed her first roosting hut from factory scraps, and she has made them in her garage workshop ever since. Arthritis in both thumbs means she can no longer pack the fiber tight enough, so there will be no further run — the last 412 huts are all there is, and when those are gone there are no more.

What people say about Jeannette’s roosting huts

I hung it under the porch roof the day it came. Three days later a chickadee slipped in at dusk. Now I check every evening.

Carol D., Bangor, ME

Smaller than I expected, and that is the whole idea. The fiber is packed thick and tight. You can tell she knew what she was doing.

Verified

Richard H., Duluth, MN

We only ever had wrens in summer. This December one sleeps in the hut every single night.

Verified

Susan M., Albany, NY

I sent one to my sister in Vermont. By Christmas she had bluebirds lining up on the deck rail next to it at sunrise.

Verified

Margaret L., Concord, NH

I watch it from the kitchen window with my coffee now. Eleven mornings in a row a chickadee came out of that hut.

Verified

Thomas B., Green Bay, WI

After the big snow there was a whole cap of it on the roof, and the door underneath stayed clear. Simple, and it works.

Verified

Linda P., Erie, PA

It hangs in the blue spruce by the sledding hill. The grandkids check on "their" chickadee every time they visit.

How is it made?

Jeannette pulls the raw coconut fiber apart by hand and lays it into a wooden hut-shaped mould, layer after layer, pressing each one down with her thumbs before the old hand press from the mat factory sets the shape. Then she pierces the entrance, tucks loose fiber inside as a bed, and threads the cotton cord through the roof. Every hut is packed in her garage in Lewiston, Maine. No two are identical.
