“For 34 years I patched up the same Christmas injury: a knuckle that met a grater at the last bit of ginger. When my granddaughter scraped hers at my bench, I sat down and drew a plate with nothing on it that can cut.”

Kaye Treloar worked in the emergency department at the hospital in Clare from 1987 to 2021. After she retired she took a pottery class and set up a wheel in her workroom. After one Christmas baking mishap she designed this plate, and she still throws every one on her wheel and cuts the teeth by hand. It took twelve tries to get them right. The plates are fired in the big kiln of her mate Col Dunstan, a potter in nearby Mintaro, and that kiln has now been fired for the last time. What’s left of that firing is all there is.

Made with love in Burra, SA — Kaye

Fresh ginger in 3 easy steps

No blades, no gripping, no clogged holes

1

Hold it in your hand

A knob of ginger, a garlic clove, a nutmeg, held the way that’s comfortable for you.

2

Rub in small circles

The teeth turn it into smooth paste in seconds. The juice runs into the channel.

3

Spoon & rinse

Scrape the paste off with a spoon, rinse the plate under the tap. Done.

What turns up at your door

Wrapped by hand, tested with fresh ginger first

1 Ginger & Garlic Plate

Glazed ceramic, 11.7 cm across, in the design you choose.

Glazed ceramic teeth

Cut by hand on Kaye’s wheel and fired on, so they can’t wear off or rust.

Juice channel

A smooth ring around the teeth that keeps every drop on the plate.

Packed by hand in Burra

Each plate is tested, wrapped in paper and boxed by Kaye or Kristy.

Why it works better than your grater

Six things Kaye got right

NO. 01

Nothing on it can cut you

No blades and no metal edges. The glazed teeth tear the fibres open instead of slicing, so you can grate right down to the last bit.

NO. 02

Every drop stays on the plate

The juice runs into the channel around the teeth. Nothing is lost inside a grater or a garlic crusher.

NO. 03

The strings stay behind

Stringy ginger fibres catch on the teeth, so your tea, stir-fry and biscuit dough get smooth paste, not threads.

NO. 04

Easy on tired hands

Hold the ginger or garlic in your whole hand and rub in circles. No squeezing a garlic crusher, no gripping a slippery rasp.

NO. 05

Teeth set at the right height

Twelve tries to get them right: sharp enough to grip, never sharp enough to cut. The cheap copies get this wrong.

NO. 06

From bench to table

Pretty enough to leave out. Grate garlic straight into a little olive oil and bring the plate to the table for dipping bread.

A metal grater vs. Kaye’s plate

For ginger, garlic and the small things

Box grater / rasp / crusher Kaye’s plate
Your fingers ✗ Get close to sharp edges at the end ✓ No edges anywhere
The last bit ✗ Usually chucked out ✓ Grated down to the nub
Juice ✗ Runs onto the bench ✓ Collects in the channel
Fibres ✗ Clog the holes ✓ Stay on the teeth, rinse off
Grip ✗ Squeeze or hold a handle ✓ Just hold the ginger
Material ✗ Metal or plastic ✓ Glazed ceramic

From 34 years in the emergency department

“Nobody ever came in hurt from the first half of a ginger root. It was always the end, when the piece got small and their knuckles got close. So I made something where the end doesn’t matter.”

— Kaye Treloar, retired emergency nurse, Clare Valley

Perfect for

The small jobs in every kitchen

🫚 Fresh ginger tea 🧄 Garlic for sauces & marinades 🍤 Christmas prawns 🍪 Homemade ginger nuts 🍋 Lemon & orange zest 🌰 Whole nutmeg 🧀 A little parmesan 👵 Hands that ache 🧒 Little helpers in the kitchen 🎁 A present for the cook

🛡️ Kaye’s 90-Day “It Has to Grate” Guarantee

If it doesn’t turn your ginger into paste, or you just don’t love it, send it back within 90 days and get your money back. No questions asked.

Good to know: The plate is small on purpose, 11.7 cm across, about the size of a saucer. It grates one knob of ginger or a few cloves of garlic at a time. For big jobs like a block of cheese or carrots for coleslaw, keep your box grater. Ceramic is breakable, so treat it like a good mug. Because every plate is finished by hand, the painted border can vary slightly from the photos.

The Last Firing

Message from Kaye:

I throw every plate on my own wheel, cut every ring of teeth by hand and paint every border myself. My little kiln only holds four plates, so I've always fired them in Col's big kiln in Mintaro. In October Col fired it for the last time, and these are the last plates from that firing. I tested every single one with a knob of fresh ginger before it was wrapped. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced.

I'm proud of every one of them. I hope they end up on benches where people cook for the people they love.

When they're gone, they're gone. There won't be another firing like this one.

What Kaye's customers are saying

Customer holding a Golden Sun grater plate

Honestly thought it'd be one of those gimmicks that ends up in the drawer with the egg slicer. Nope. Grated a whole knob of ginger for my stir fry in about a minute and there was nothing left but the skin. The Golden Sun one is even prettier in real life.

Sharon W., Mount Gambier

Customer holding a Cornflower grater plate

I've got arthritis in both thumbs and gave up on fresh garlic years ago. With this I just hold the clove and go round and round, no squeezing. It's small, about the size of a saucer, so read the measurements, but that's all I need for the two of us.

Verified

Wendy K., Port Lincoln

Customer holding a Poppy Red grater plate with ginger

Proper heavy ceramic, not the thin cheap stuff. The red is exactly like the photos and the teeth actually grab the ginger instead of sliding around. Rinsed it under the tap and it came up clean straight away.

Michelle D., Ballarat

Ripple grater plate next to ginger tea on a verandah

Ginger and lemon tea every morning out on the verandah and this little plate has made it so much easier. The stringy bits stay on the teeth and the juice ends up in the cup, not all over the bench. Reckon I've used it every day since it turned up.

Pauline R., Gympie

Blue Vine grater plate with garlic next to prawns

Did the garlic and ginger for the Christmas prawns on it and didn't have to fish bits of skin out of the marinade once. It came wrapped in paper inside a little box with not a chip on it. Already ordered another one for my sister.

Trudy F., Geelong

Golden Sun grater plate next to ginger nuts and tea

Bought it so my granddaughter could help with the ginger nuts without me hovering over the grater. She did the lot herself and her knuckles are still in one piece. Bit more than I'd normally pay for a kitchen thing, but it's worth it, and there's the 90 day guarantee if not.

How is the plate made?

Kaye throws every plate herself on the potter's wheel in her workroom in Burra, cuts the rings of small teeth by hand with a little wooden tool while the clay is leather-hard, and paints every border by hand. Because her own kiln only holds four plates, they were fired in the big kiln of her friend Col Dunstan, a potter in Mintaro, which has now been fired for the last time. Every plate is tested with fresh ginger before it is wrapped. Real glazed ceramic, no metal, no plastic.
