Kelvin's Handcrafted Bird Bath

A shallow hanging copper bath for the small birds — fairy-wrens, silvereyes, thornbills, honeyeaters. Off the ground, in the shade, out of reach of cats.

☂️ Inverted umbrella design🪝 Hooks over any branch🐦 One sculpted bird on the rim☀️ Built for Australian summers
⏰

Please note: this is the last batch Kelvin is making. When the current stock is gone, there won't be another run. Dispatched within Australia in 2–3 business days.

We've got a big concrete bath by the shed and the magpies and wattlebirds own it. The little fellas — the wrens, the silvereyes — wait in the hedge and never get a go. I wanted something small and shallow I could hang in the shade of the gum, where the big birds can't be bothered and the cat can't reach.
— Kelvin Treloar, Lobethal, Adelaide Hills

What arrives at your door

One piece, hand-finished. No assembly.

☂️
The umbrella bath22 cm inverted umbrella bowl, iron with hand-applied copper coating. Eight ball finials, teardrop finial at the centre.
🪝
Integrated spiral hookLoops over a gum branch, pergola beam or verandah edge. Lifts off just as quickly to tip out and rinse.
🐦
One sculpted songbirdA single metal bird on the rim — real birds read it as a safe perch and land beside it.

Six things that separate this from a concrete bath

Each one changes which birds come and whether they're safe while they're there.

01Shallow enough for a fairy-wren

Small birds can drown in a few centimetres of water. 1.5 cm at the rim, about 4 cm at the centre — a wren drinks from the edge, a honeyeater wades in, nothing goes under.

02Too small for the bullies

Dinner-plate size — no room for a magpie to stretch out, so the big birds leave it alone. The wrens and silvereyes that get chased off the big bath finally have their own.

03Hangs in the shade

Birds choose baths in dappled shade, and water in full sun goes warm and green by lunchtime. A hook means you put it exactly where the shade is.

04Off the ground, away from cats

A clear sightline all round, and water where a cat can't crouch beside it. Hang it near a dense shrub and they've got cover to dart back into.

05Fresh water in thirty seconds

Lift off, tip out, rinse, hang back up. The copper also resists the algae film that turns a concrete bath green in days.

06Catches the rain on its own

Go away for the weekend and a shower refills it. Not a substitute for topping up on a 38-degree day — but most days it looks after itself.

Why most people hang two

Because of how backyard birds actually share water.

The honeyeaters guard theirs

Honeyeaters and wattlebirds chase every other bird off a bath they've claimed. A second bath across the yard gives the wrens one they aren't watching.

Several baths, safer birds

Wildlife groups recommend several water points so birds can always pick the one that feels safe — a cat appears, a currawong lands. Two small baths beat one busy one.

Shade moves — so should the water

Morning shade on the east side, afternoon shade under the gum. One in each means cool water somewhere all day.

One hanging, one being rinsed

With two you rotate, and on a heatwave day there's never a dry hook when a bird needs a drink.

Summer heatwaves kill small birds; water in the shade is the most useful thing a backyard can offer them. Quantity discount at checkout for a second, third or fourth bath.

From the workshop

"Hang it in the shade, within a couple of metres of a bush, and change the water every day when it's hot. That's all it needs. Mine hangs off the gum next to the grevillea, and the wrens are in it before I've finished my coffee."

🛡️

90 days, no argument

Hang it, fill it, watch who turns up. Not convinced after three months? Send it back for a full refund. No forms, no questions.

☂️

Handcrafted means one of a kind. Small variations in the copper tone are the mark of a hand finish, and every bath ages differently outdoors.

The Final Sale

A message from Kelvin:

After the best part of fifty years at the bench, my hands have had enough. This is the last batch of bird baths I'll make. Every one was shaped and finished by hand in my shed in Lobethal, slowly, no shortcuts, nothing sent off to a factory.

I hope they end up hanging in the shade of a gum somewhere, with a wren in them before the coffee's finished.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so is the workshop.

kelvin bird bath ugc 1

Turned up well packed, no dings, and it feels solid in the hand. Proper weight to it, not tinny. Hung it off the gum out the back and had a fairy wren in it by the arvo. The little metal bird on the edge is cute without being naff.

Hook over the branch and you are done, no tools. We hit 36 degrees last week and I was topping it up twice a day because the birds were going through it. Water stays cleaner than the old concrete bath, which was green within days. Good buy.

Got it for the backyard, my little bloke is three and now the first thing every morning is checking the birdies. Fairy wrens, silvereyes, a wattlebird that bosses everyone around. It is lighter than it looks but it does not swing about in the wind like I thought it would.

Coffee on the verandah has gone up a level. Two little birds in it most mornings before seven. Only thing I would say is keep it in the shade, the water gets warm quick out here. Otherwise no complaints, reckon it is worth every dollar.

Hung it off the pergola so I can see it from the kitchen sink. Magpie larks, honeyeaters, the lot. I was worried it would be too small but that is actually why the little birds use it, the big ones leave it alone. Arrived quicker than expected too.

Honest take. It is about the size of a dinner plate so do not expect a magpie spa. But for the small birds it is perfect and the copper has already started to darken nicely in the sun. Bought a second one for the shady side of the yard so the wrens get their own.
