Lavonne's Handmade Christmas Socks
Knit on a Blue Ridge porch for 38 Christmases
Lavonne Kimbrough, 72, has knit Christmas hug socks in Sparta, North Carolina, since 1986 — five little characters whose arms wrap around your leg. Arthritis in her thumbs has ended the work. These are her last 212 pairs.
“I don’t want my last hug socks in a drawer. I want them on a grandchild’s feet on Christmas morning. Not every grandma gets to sit next to her grandkids on Christmas — but she can put a hug in the mail.”
Lavonne Kimbrough · Sparta, North Carolina
What comes in the box
Calf-high, one size for most adults
Face, hat and two hugging arms
Icing waves, snowflakes or boot laces
Packed with care, gift-ready
What makes Lavonne’s hug socks different
Two little knit arms wrap all the way around the leg and keep the sock up. Not a patch — a real hug.
A touch of stretch in the yarn. One size fits almost every grown-up foot, no slipping, no pinching.
Santa, Gingerbread Man, Reindeer, Snowman and Nutcracker — each one knit for someone in Lavonne’s family.
Machine washable. The faces and arms keep their shape, wash after wash.
Light, small and easy to ship — the gift for grandkids who live too far away to hug on Christmas.
Calf-high and soft. Made for Christmas morning by the tree, movie nights and chilly kitchens.
“Older adults and small children lose heat through their feet first, and cold feet make the whole body feel cold. A calf-high sock that stays up keeps the ankles and lower legs covered, which is exactly where most store socks slide down. And there is something else I see every winter: a gift a child can wear and touch connects them to a grandparent far better than anything on a screen.”

Why Lavonne’s socks hold up
- Stretch knit. Soft yarn with a little give, so it fits feet from size 6 to 12.
- Arms that hold. The hug keeps the sock from sliding down.
- Machine washable. Faces and arms come out of the wash looking the same.
- Calf-high. Covers the ankles, where cold gets in first.
- Made to be worn. Brynlee still wears the Santa pattern from 1986 every Christmas Eve.
If they don’t make someone smile, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Lavonne would rather have them back than have them sit in a drawer.
Tip from Lavonne: Wash them inside out on cold and let them air dry — the little faces will thank you. Each character is shaped by hand, so a hat, a scarf or a smile can sit a little differently from pair to pair.

A note from the porch:
Lavonne Kimbrough has knit Christmas hug socks on her back porch in Sparta, North Carolina, since Christmas Eve 1986. It started when her four-year-old granddaughter Brynlee cried in a cold church because her feet were freezing — that night Lavonne knit a little Santa whose arms hold on to the leg. Since then, about 1,400 pairs have gone to her grandkids, her church and the Christmas bazaar, always in the same five characters: Santa, Gingerbread Man, Reindeer, Snowman and Nutcracker. Arthritis in both thumbs no longer lets her knit the tiny faces and arms. 212 pairs are left in her cedar chest, all five characters together. When they are gone, there will be no more.

I sent the reindeer pair to my grandson in Oregon. His mom sent me a video of him walking around the house saying ‘Grandma’s hugging my legs.’ I cried.

Bought the nutcracker pair for my husband as a joke. He has worn them every evening since Thanksgiving. They stretch nicely and don’t slide down.

Soft, warm and they actually stay up. I have the gingerbread pair on right now with my coffee.
