Sold over the same counter since 1946

Lindsay Pethybridge has stood behind the counter of Pethybridge’s on Mackenzie Avenue in Revelstoke, British Columbia since 1985. His grandfather came over from Cornwall in 1923 and worked the railway through Rogers Pass for twenty-three years, then opened the store on this corner in 1946: kerosene, stove parts, shovels and nails.

In 2016, after one winter too many of customers complaining that throwaway packets went cold before the second school bus, Lindsay tested eleven rechargeable warmers side by side. The penguin was the only one he put on his shelf. A little over 9,000 have gone across his counter in the nine winters since, and the model has not changed once.

The building has been sold and the store closes on November 30. These 1,800 are the last ones. Whatever is left keeps going out from Tegan’s garage until the shelf is empty.

— Lindsay

“Mrs. Kowalski is the crossing guard out front. Every week of winter she bought a box of packets from me, and every week they were cold before the second school bus. So I tried eleven rechargeable warmers over a whole winter. This penguin was the only one I’d put on my shelf. I didn’t like the face. She came back for four more.”

— Lindsay Pethybridge, Pethybridge’s, since 1985

What arrives at your door

  • 1 penguin hand warmer that splits into 2 separate halves
  • Switched on and checked on Lindsay’s counter before it is boxed

Why it’s the one on his shelf

No. 01

Two warmers in one

The penguin splits into two halves. Keep one in each pocket, one in each hand, or hand one to whoever is next to you in the stands at the rink.

No. 02

Up to 20 + 20 hours

Up to twenty hours per half, and there are two halves. That’s a whole double school-bus run, a full day on the ice, or a long night at a backcountry hut.

No. 03

Three heat levels

Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. Three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.

No. 04

USB-C rechargeable

Charges from the same type of cable as most new phones. No more boxes of throwaway packets in the truck.

No. 05

Pocket size

8.8 cm tall, 5.6 cm wide. It fits in a jacket pocket, inside a glove or in a closed hand.

No. 06

Checked by hand

Every warmer is opened, switched on and run through all three levels on Lindsay’s counter before it goes in a mailer.

Throwaway packets or Lindsay’s penguin?

Disposable packets Lindsay’s penguin
Used once, then into the garbage Recharged again and again over USB-C
A new box every week of winter One warmer, winter after winter
Cold before the second school bus Up to 20 hours per half, and there are two halves
One temperature, whatever it decides Three heat levels at the press of a button
Lumpy and stiff once it is spent A smooth silver front that warms evenly across your palm
One packet, one hand Splits in two: one for each hand or each pocket
Off a factory line, nobody checks it Switched on and checked on Lindsay’s counter before it is boxed

How to use it

  1. Charge both halves fully before the first use, with a USB-C cable, the same kind most new phones use.
  2. Press the button once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. The three small lights above the button show which level you’re on.
  3. Pull the two halves apart if you want two warmers: one in each pocket, or one for whoever is standing next to you.
  4. Put them back together and charge them overnight, ready for the next cold morning.

Ask Lindsay — from behind the counter

“Which setting should I use?”

Press once for low, twice for medium, three times for high. I start on low and press again when I’m standing still in the wind.

“Why two halves?”

Because you have two hands. And because somebody next to you always forgets their gloves.

“Is it heavy?”

No, but it isn’t flimsy either. It has a bit of weight to it, solid in your hand, and each half still disappears into a closed fist.

“Can I charge it in the truck?”

Yes, if your truck has a USB port and you have a USB-C cable. It charges the same way your phone does.

“Is it a toy?”

No. The face is silly. I didn’t like it either. Then I watched grown men in work parkas pull it out of their pockets and grin. It stays.

From someone who is outside every winter morning

“I’ve carried mail out past Malakwa six days a week for nine winters, and this penguin has been in my jacket for all nine. One half lives in my left pocket, the other in my right. My hands are in and out of mailboxes all morning, and it’s still warm when I finish the route. The only trouble I’ve had with it is my wife taking it.”

— Rural mail carrier, out past Malakwa, BC · owner since 2017

The Final Sale

A note from the counter:

Pethybridge’s has stood on Mackenzie Avenue in Revelstoke, British Columbia since 1946. The building has been sold, and on November 30 the doors close for good. These 1,800 penguins are the last winter order Lindsay will ever place. Every one is opened, switched on and checked on his counter before Tegan packs it.

Whatever is left after November 30 ships from Tegan’s garage until the shelf is empty.

When they’re gone, they’re gone — and so are we.

What Lindsay's customers are saying

Customer photo penguin hand warmer

Spent more on throwaway packets last winter than this cost me. One half in each pocket for the walk to the post office and it’s still going when I get home. The penguin face cracks my grandkids up every time.

Penguin hand warmer on a hi-vis vest in a work truck

I do early shifts on the snow-clearing crew and my fingers used to be done in ten minutes. Charged it on Sunday and used it most of the week on low. Splitting it in two was the bit I didn’t know I needed.

Penguin hand warmer on a tackle box by a frosty lake

Bought it for my husband’s early-morning trout fishing. He laughed at the face, took it anyway, and now I can’t get it back off him. Ordering a second so I’ve got my own.

Fits inside my glove without making it tight. Three levels is plenty, I mostly use the middle one. Turned up quick and well packed.

I’m on the sideline every Saturday for my grandson’s soccer. Used to be frozen by half time. Now I hold the penguin and swap hands at the break. Small thing, big difference.

Customer holding the penguin hand warmer before a ski trip

Got one each for my daughters for their ski trip to Whistler in January. Both already packed them. USB-C means they’ll actually remember to charge it.
