Lorna's Sweet-Dreams Moggy Lamp
Painted by hand in a little tin workshop in Castlemaine, Victoria
Lorna Whitfield, 70, has made lamps in the Goldfields since 1987. Arthritis is ending her fine work — these are the last Moggy Lamps she will ever make.
“People always wanted something with a little soul. So I made a lamp that looks like a little cat keeping watch over the room. After 38 years I’m closing the workshop — and I’d like every last one to go to a home where it’s loved.”
Lorna Whitfield · Castlemaine, Victoria
What comes in the box

Built in — no bulbs to change
With its own on/off switch
Safely packed, lovely to give
What makes Lorna’s Moggy Lamp special
Deep blue, amber and gold panels framed by dark lines — like a little stained-glass window. Switched on, the whole body glows from within.
Big green eyes shine out of the dark face, framed by tall pointed ears. It really does look like a cat keeping watch.
The LED sits deep inside, so the light comes softly through the panels. Soft and easy on the eyes — never harsh.
Plug into any USB charger or port and flip the little switch on the cord. No fiddly wiring, no bulbs, no batteries.
A flat round base keeps it firmly in place on a bedside table, windowsill or bookshelf.
Every panel painted and checked one by one in Lorna’s workshop. Small differences from piece to piece are part of the charm.
“Most decorative lamps are made to be looked at for a week. Lorna’s cats are made to be lived with. The light is placed so it glows through the panels rather than at you, which is exactly what you want in a bedroom or reading corner in the evening. It is a lovely example of a craft that is quietly disappearing in Australia.”
Fiona Carmody · Interior lighting designer · Melbourne
Perfect for
Why a Moggy Lamp lasts
- LED inside. Runs cool and lasts for years — nothing to replace.
- Safe low voltage. USB powered, so it is fine for bedrooms and kids’ rooms.
- Sturdy body. A solid moulded body with painted panels — not thin glass that chips.
- Switch on the cord. Turn it on and off without reaching behind furniture.
- Checked one by one. Every lamp is switched on and inspected before it leaves the workshop.
If your Moggy Lamp doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Lorna would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.
Please note the size. The Moggy Lamp is a small lamp — about 17 cm tall and 10 cm wide, roughly the height of a coffee mug. It is made to glow softly, not to light a whole room. A USB wall adapter is not included — any phone charger works.

A note from the workshop:
Bonnie Harlan has made lamps in her little workshop above Main Street in Stillwater, Minnesota, since 1988 — more than 17,000 of them, every one painted by hand. The Kitty Lamp became her most-loved design: a small cat that seems to keep watch over the room when it glows. Now arthritis in her hands means the fine painting is over. Around 480 lamps from her final collection are left, and she closes the workshop for good just before Christmas. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?
Bonnie draws every cat by hand first. The body is molded, then each of the colored panels is painted by hand in deep blue, amber and gold, with the dark lines between them like the lead in a church window. A warm-white LED sits deep inside so the light glows through the panels without blinding you. Every lamp is switched on and checked before it leaves the workshop. Small differences from piece to piece are part of the charm.
