Soup on one side. Your sandwich on the other. One handle to carry it all.

Luetta Kranz has been at the potter’s wheel for 49 years. When her husband Verlyn’s hands started to shake and he quietly gave up on soup, she made him a bowl he could carry with one hand. This is that bowl, from her very last big firing. Her shoulder won’t allow another.

tries to get the handle right

“Everybody thinks the handle is the pretty part. It isn’t. The handle is where you tell the weight to go.”

— Luetta Kranz

What arrives at your door

  • One handmade ceramic soup and sandwich bowl in the glaze you choose
  • Wrapped by hand in brown paper by Luetta and her daughter Marit
  • A short card from the studio

What makes Luetta’s bowl different

No. 01

One piece, one hand

A deep cup and a curved plate thrown as one dish. Nothing slides against anything else on the way to the table or the chair.

No. 02

The handle sits where the weight is

A wide loop right beside the soup, big enough for a thumb and two fingers. The bowl hangs level instead of tipping toward your wrist.

No. 03

A wall between soup and bread

The cup’s high wall keeps the soup on its own side. Grilled cheese stays crisp, crackers stay dry.

No. 04

Steady wherever you eat

A wide, flat foot that sits still on a lap tray, a TV tray or a side table.

No. 05

Microwave and dishwasher safe

Warm the soup right in the cup, eat, and put the whole thing in the dishwasher. One dish to wash instead of two.

No. 06

Real ceramic, made by hand

Thrown on the wheel, kiln-fired and dipped in glaze by hand. Real weight in your hand, and no two bowls exactly alike.

Pick your glaze

Prairie Cream

A warm, speckled white with a toasted rim.

Barn Red

The deep red of the old barns on the road to Sleepy Eye.

Minnesota River Blue

Deep and glossy, with a pale speckled rim.

Sweet Corn Yellow

Warm and sunny, the color of August.

How to use it

  1. Fill the cup with soup, chili or chowder, a finger’s width below the rim. Warm it right in the microwave if you like.
  2. Load the plate with half a sandwich, a grilled cheese, crackers or a slice of bread.
  3. Thumb through the handle, fingers underneath, and carry it close. Your other hand stays free.
  4. When you’re done, it all goes in the dishwasher together.

Made by hand in New Ulm

Luetta throws every cup, shapes every plate and pulls every handle in the old garage behind her house in New Ulm, Minnesota. Before a bowl is wrapped, she lifts it once by the handle. If it doesn’t hang level, it goes on the seconds shelf. Her shoulder won’t allow another big firing, so what’s left from September is her last, on sale until November 30 while it lasts.

Luetta’s standard

  • Thrown, shaped and glazed by hand
  • Every bowl lifted by the handle before it ships
  • Microwave and dishwasher safe
  • Wrapped by hand, ships within 1–2 business days
  • 90-day money-back guarantee

90-day money-back guarantee

“If it doesn’t make lunch easier at your house, I want to hear about it, and I want you to have your money back.” Use it every day for 90 days. If it isn’t right for you, email us and get a full refund. No questions asked.

Care and handling: Microwave and dishwasher safe. Hot soup still makes a hot bowl, so carry it by the handle and fill the cup a finger’s width below the rim. Because every piece is glazed by hand, color and speckling vary slightly from bowl to bowl. This is a serving dish, not a medical or assistive device.

The September Firing

A note from the studio:

Luetta Kranz has been at the potter’s wheel in New Ulm, Minnesota, for 49 years. When her husband Verlyn’s hands started to shake and he quietly stopped eating soup so he wouldn’t spill it, she made him one dish he could carry with one hand: a deep cup for the soup, a curved plate for the sandwich, and a wide handle set right where the weight is. Since May the bowls have sold at the Saturday market in New Ulm. Her shoulder won’t allow another big firing, so the bowls left from September are her last. On sale until November 30, while they last.

What people say about Luetta’s soup bowls

Customer holding her Prairie Cream soup and sandwich bowl with tomato soup and crackers

Bought the cream one for myself after my sister showed me hers. Soup on one side, a few crackers on the other, and I carry it to my chair with one hand. It is heavy in the good way, real pottery. Wish I had found it years ago.

Verified

Marlys B., Owatonna, MN

Barn Red soup and sandwich bowl with chicken noodle soup on a TV tray

My hands shake, so my wife used to carry my lunch to the chair for me. Too proud to let her keep doing that. Now I carry this one myself every day at noon. Not a drop on the carpet since it came. The red is even nicer in person.

Verified

Gary H., Dubuque, IA

Customer with two Minnesota River Blue soup and sandwich bowls at her kitchen table

I got two in the blue for me and my neighbor. We have soup and half a sandwich together on Thursdays and nobody has to juggle plates. Goes right in the dishwasher after, which matters to me.

Verified

Judy K., Fargo, ND

Prairie Cream soup and sandwich bowl with soup in a microwave

Bought it for my dad, who is 84 and lives alone. He heats his soup right in it in the microwave and walks it to the table himself. That alone was worth it to our family.

Verified

Ronald T., La Crosse, WI

Customer holding her Sweet Corn Yellow bowl with tomato soup and grilled cheese

Grilled cheese stays crisp on its side because the soup stays in the cup. Sounds like a small thing until you have eaten soggy bread for years. My wife says the yellow one is mine now and nobody else touches it.

Verified

Dale S., Rochester, MN

Barn Red soup and sandwich bowl unpacked from brown paper next to its box

Came wrapped in brown paper with a little card from the studio and got here faster than I expected. Ordered two more as Christmas presents for my sisters before they sell out.

How is it made?

Luetta throws each cup on the wheel herself, shapes the curved plate and joins the two while the clay is still soft. Then she pulls the handle and sets it right beside the soup, so the bowl hangs level when you carry it. After the first firing she dips each bowl in one of four glazes and fires it again. Before it is wrapped, Luetta lifts every bowl once by the handle. No two are identical. Microwave and dishwasher safe.
