Margaret's Sure-Grip Hand-Carved Walking Stick
Hand-carved in a tin shed in the Riverina, New South Wales
Margaret Doyle, seventy-one. Thirty-six years a country nurse on the farms around Lockhart, and nearly four thousand walking sticks since 1994. 172 left, and the shed closes before Christmas.
“Every farmer I visited had a walking stick. And every one of them left it behind the laundry door, because it made them look like a patient. People don’t need a better stick. They need one they’re not ashamed to carry.”
Margaret Doyle · Lockhart, New South Wales
What arrives at your door
Four things that make it different
The grip is shaped to the heel of the hand first. The animal is carved around it afterwards. The weight spreads across the whole palm, not two knuckles.
The handle sits at a slight angle, not flat across. The weight goes into the palm and forearm instead of the wrist.
Oiled by hand, not varnished. Varnish turns slippery with a sweaty hand on a hot day. Oiled wood grips back.
A thick rubber tip on solid wood. It holds on wet tiles and verandah steps and doesn’t click down the hallway at the GP.
Four grips, four different hands
Made for
What you are actually getting
- Solid hardwood. No hollow metal tube, nothing to rattle.
- Cut to your height, once. It ships long on purpose. A fine-toothed saw takes a few centimetres off in under a minute.
- Hand-carved detail. Every feather and every strand of mane cut by hand, not pressed or moulded.
- A finish you can feel through. Hand-rubbed oil, not sprayed varnish, so it doesn’t turn slippery in the heat.
- 172 in total. Across all four grips. The shed is closing, so there is no restock.
Grip preference is personal. If the shape is wrong for the hand it was meant for, send it back within thirty days for a full refund — one email starts it, no explanation needed. A stick that stays behind the door helps nobody.
These are carved by hand from natural hardwood, so grain, tone and the depth of each cut vary from piece to piece. Two Owls are never identical. The stick also arrives longer than you need — that is deliberate, so it can be cut to your exact height.

A note from the shed:
For thirty-six years Margaret Doyle was the district nurse for the farms around Lockhart, NSW. On almost every visit she found the grey hospital walking stick behind the laundry door, unused. In 1994 she carved an owl onto a stick for a sheep farmer who refused to be seen with his, and he used it every day for eleven years. Nearly four thousand walking sticks later, arthritis in both thumbs means she can no longer hold a chisel for long. These 172 are the last ones from her shed. When they are gone, there will be no more.

What people say about Margaret's walking sticks
I’m eighty and I took the owl to my grandson’s wedding under the gum trees. Three people asked where they could get one before the speeches.
Verified
Joan F., Orange NSW
The horse comes apart and lives in the caravan now. My old metal stick never fitted anywhere and rattled the whole trip.
Verified
Graham P., Bendigo VIC
My wrist used to ache after the walk to the shops. With the elephant it doesn’t. The angle of the handle really makes the difference.
Verified
Peter M., Albury NSW
The dog and my husband walk the river track every morning. He refused anything that looked medical. He has named the leopard.

Rosalind T., Geelong VIC
It arrived wrapped in brown paper and string, with the length written on the end in pencil. It felt like a present from a person, not a parcel.
Verified
Barry W., Mildura VIC
It leans by my chair on the verandah now, not behind the door. Getting up from that low cane chair is so much easier with the trunk to hold.

Carol H., Toowoomba QLD
I’m back at the bowls club every Saturday. Mum’s old hospital stick stayed in the hall for two years. This one comes with me.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Margaret starts with the shape, not the animal. She cuts the grip until it sits right in the heel of the hand, at a slight angle to the shaft. Only then does she carve the owl, horse, elephant or leopard into it, cut by cut. The finish is oil, rubbed in by hand, so the grip stays dry and sure in a hot, sweaty hand. Each stick is wrapped in brown paper with its length pencilled on the end.
