Marjorie's Handmade Christmas Scarf
The scarf that walked down Main Street for 32 Christmases
Marjorie Tuttle, 73, has sewn character scarves for the Stowe Holiday Parade in Vermont every December since 1994. Arthritis in both thumbs won’t let her sew the little boots anymore. These are her last 212.
“My son was six and wouldn’t stand still at the parade, so I sewed him a snowman with legs. I don’t want these in a drawer. I want them out on the sidewalk, making somebody laugh.”
Marjorie Tuttle · Stowe, Vermont
What comes in the box
Snowman, Santa or Gnome
Wraps twice, boots still swing at the waist
Stuffed legs on both ends
Folded and packed by hand
What 32 parades taught Marjorie about a scarf
Both ends finish in little legs with stuffed boots. They keep the scarf hanging straight in the wind, and they walk along with every step.
Seven feet long and seven inches wide. Wrap it twice over a heavy winter coat and there is still plenty left to hang.
Soft curly teddy fleece instead of wool. It feels like a stuffed animal and never itches on a bare neck.
Two wooden buttons and a trimmed hem on the other end. Worn together, head and coat make one whole little figure.
The snowman, Santa and gnome heads are soft and padded, not printed on. Hats, beards and noses all stand out from the scarf.
Grandma, Grandpa or a grandchild on a sled. Wear it long and loose or wrapped up tight.
“Small-town parades in Vermont are as much about the crowd as the floats. Every year you see a few people in Marjorie’s scarves, and children follow them down the sidewalk. A scarf like this does what good holiday clothing should do: it keeps you warm and it starts a conversation with a stranger.”
Diane Merriweather · Volunteer coordinator, small-town holiday events · Lamoille County, Vermont
Choose your figure
Perfect for
Why people stop you on the sidewalk
- Soft teddy fleece. Warm, cozy and never scratchy.
- Swinging boots. The little legs walk along with you.
- Generous length. 83 inches, enough to wrap twice.
- Real wooden buttons. A little coat on the other end.
- Three figures only. Snowman, Santa and Gnome, as they have been since 2012.
If it doesn’t make you smile, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Marjorie would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.
Good to know: Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Do not iron the fleece. The little boots and heads are stuffed by hand, so every scarf is a little different from the next.

A note from the sewing room:
Marjorie Tuttle has sewn character scarves for the holiday parade in Stowe, Vermont, every December since 1994 — about 2,600 of them, from the sewing room above her garage. It started with one snowman with legs, sewn the night before the parade for her six-year-old son. Arthritis in both thumbs means she can no longer hand-sew the little boots through four layers of fleece, so this fall she sewed her last one. 212 scarves are left across Snowman, Santa and Gnome, and when those are gone there are no more.

What people say about Marjorie's scarves
I wore the snowman to my church's Christmas fair and could not get ten steps without someone stopping me. So soft, and long enough to wrap twice over my coat.

Bought the Santa for my husband as a joke. He has worn it every day since Thanksgiving, and the grandkids chase the little boots around the house.

Sharon M., Erie, PA
Sent the gnome to my sister in Florida, who has never needed a scarf in her life. She wears it to the boardwalk Christmas parade anyway.

Kathleen B., Worcester, MA
I have a sensitive neck and wool drives me crazy. This one is soft as a teddy bear and keeps me warm on the morning walk with the dog.

Joyce T., Burlington, VT
Ordered all three for my daughters. They wore them together for my Christmas card photo. It is the best card I have ever sent.

Got the gnome for my granddaughter. She has not taken it off since, not even on the sled. Knowing a lady in Stowe sewed it makes it special.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Marjorie cuts each scarf from soft teddy fleece and sews the long seams on her 1979 machine. Everything else is finished by hand: the padded snowman, Santa or gnome head, the hat or beard, two wooden coat buttons and four little boots, each stuffed a pinch at a time so the legs swing when you walk. About six hours go into every scarf, so no two are exactly alike.
