Melanie's Copper Clock Bird Feeder
Built in a Clock Shop in Woodstock, Vermont
Melanie Calloway, 74, fixed clocks for 41 years. Her eyes won’t let her set the mesh straight anymore. These 184 feeders are the last she will ever finish.
“Clocks wait. Someone else will fix them. Birds don’t wait.”
– Melanie Calloway, clockmaker since 1984What’s in the box
Why the birds stay all morning
Small birds cling to the fine mesh and pull out one seed at a time. The food lasts into the afternoon instead of ending up in the snow.
Hang it from a branch, or stand it on its two legs in a garden bed or on a porch rail. Right where you look every morning.
Sturdy metal with a weatherproof copper finish. Snow, freezing rain and thaw, winter after winter. No wood to rot, no plastic to crack.
The birds sit while they eat instead of fluttering. On a cold morning, every bit of energy counts.
About 10 inches across with raised copper numbers. Easy to see from inside, and you can see through the mesh when it needs a refill.
The clock hands are just for looks. “They’re a reminder,” Melanie says. “Every morning their clock starts ticking.”
“Chickadees, juncos and other small songbirds put on fat during the short winter days and burn much of it overnight just to keep warm. On the coldest mornings, a reliable source of high-fat food like black-oil sunflower seed, close to trees or shrubs for cover, gives them a real head start.”
– Dr. Ellen Marsh, Avian Ecologist, Burlington, VTPerfect for
Melanie’s checklist
- Sturdy metal: no plastic body, no wood that rots.
- Weatherproof copper finish: made to stay outside all winter.
- Fine mesh: one seed at a time, so the food lasts.
- Hang or stand: ring on top, two legs at the bottom.
- Landing rail: a place to sit and eat in peace.
30-Day “Birds at the Window” Guarantee
If the feeder doesn’t bring birds to your window, send us a short email within 30 days and you get your money back.
Good to know: The clock hands are decorative and do not tell time. The feeder is made for small birds like chickadees, juncos, finches and wrens. Fill it with black-oil sunflower seeds or sunflower hearts, and hang it near a tree or shrub so the birds have cover close by.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the clock shop:
Melanie Calloway has repaired clocks in the back room of her shop on Central Street in Woodstock, Vermont, since 1984 — more than 6,000 of them. In the ice storm of January 1998 she found three chickadees on her doorstep, and that week she built her first feeder from the copper case of an old alarm clock. She has counted the birds at her window every morning since — 28 notebooks of them. Macular degeneration means she can no longer set the mesh straight, so there will be no further run — the last 184 feeders are on two shelves in the back room, and when those are gone there are no more.

What people say about Melanie’s clock feeders
It hangs on the maple outside my kitchen window. The first morning after the snow there were four chickadees on it before my coffee was done.

We get real winter up here. Two feet of snow on the porch rail and the juncos still found it every single morning. Solid metal, nothing cracked.

Richard D., Duluth, MN
Bought it for my brother, a retired watch repairman. He laughed out loud when he opened it under the tree — then hung it up the same day.

Susan M., Syracuse, NY
I never had a cardinal at my old feeder. Second week with this one on the shepherd’s hook, there he was on the rail with a chickadee.
Verified
Gloria T., Columbus, OH
We had freezing rain for two days and everything was glazed in ice. The feeder came through without a scratch and the birds never left it.
Verified
James K., Burlington, VT
My grandson calls it the bird clock. Every morning he points at it and asks what time it is for the chickadees.

Nancy B., Lansing, MI
It hangs from the pergola where I can see it from my reading chair. The mesh makes the seed last — I fill it every few days instead of every morning.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Melanie shapes each metal body over a wooden form at her bench and gives it its weatherproof copper finish, sets the fine diamond mesh into the clock window by hand, and fits the perch rail, the two legs and the hanging ring. The clock hands are decorative and don’t move. Every feeder is wrapped in newspaper and packed at her kitchen table. No two are identical.
