Moira's Hand-Tuned Copper Wind Chime
Hand-tuned in an old boat shed above Otago Harbour
Moira Galbraith, 71, built wooden boats at Careys Bay for 38 years. She tunes every copper chime by ear against the bell from her father’s harbour tug. Her thumbs will no longer let her make new ones. These are her last.
“Most wind chimes from the big shops don’t sing. They clatter. I’d just like to know mine are out in the wind somewhere, ringing on somebody’s deck.”
Moira Galbraith · Port Chalmers, Otago
What comes in the box
Cut and tuned to one soft chord
Your choice of five animals on top
Two voices with every breeze
A note from Moira in every box
What makes Moira’s chime sing, not clatter
Every tube is checked against her father’s old tug bell. Four notes that belong together, so you hear a soft chord.
Every tube end is filed dead square, the way Moira finished copper rivets for 38 years. A square end rings on and on.
Copper is heavier and softer than aluminium. The sound is deeper and warmer, like a bell across the harbour.
No paint to flake off. The copper slowly darkens in the weather and looks better every year.
No machine. Moira flicks every tube with a fingernail and listens before it goes on the chime.
Solid copper that handles salt air, sun and a good southerly without rusting or fading.
“Most cheap chimes have tubes cut to any old length, so the notes clash. A tuned set is a different thing altogether. Copper gives a warmer, softer tone than aluminium, the kind of sound you can live with every evening.”
Alistair Mowbray · Piano tuner · Dunedin

Why Moira’s chime lasts
- Solid copper. No thin, painted tubes that peel after one winter.
- Tuned, not just cut. Every tube is checked by ear before it is hung.
- Square-filed ends. A clean ring that carries, not a dull clunk.
- Strong hanging ring. Holds firm through a gusty afternoon.
- No power needed. Just hang it up and let the wind do the rest.
Hang it up and listen for 30 days. If it isn’t the sound you hoped for, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Moira would rather have it back than see it sit in a box.
Tip from Moira: Hang it where the breeze can reach it and the tubes can swing freely, at least a hand’s width from a wall or post. The copper will slowly darken outdoors. That is the patina, not damage, and it is part of the charm.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the workshop:
Moira Galbraith built wooden boats at the Careys Bay yard in Port Chalmers for 38 years, the only woman on the slipway when she started in 1973. Her trade was copper: the rivets that hold every plank of a clinker dinghy together. Since 2012 she has made copper wind chimes in the old boat shed behind her house, checking every tube by ear against the brass bell from her father’s harbour tug. She still rings that bell every morning at half past seven. Now the joints at the base of both thumbs have worn out, and she can no longer grip the tube cutter. The chimes on her rack are the last she will ever make. When they are gone, the shed goes back to being a shed.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Moira cuts each of the four copper tubes, files the ends dead square and checks every one by ear against the old brass bell from her father’s harbour tug, so the four notes sit together as one soft chord. The copper cap and the animal on top are left unpainted, so the patina darkens naturally outdoors. If a tube sounds wrong, it goes back on the bench.
