Morwenna’s Quilted Christmas Tote – the bag that comes out every December

Final collection · Net loft closes 19 December

Three layers, quilted all the way through, with a whole little Christmas scene stitched across the front. Made one at a time by Morwenna Trevorrow in her old net loft above Mousehole harbour – and these are the last ones she will ever sew.

“Fill it with presents and carry it proudly.” – Morwenna

“I wanted a bag that did more than carry things. I wanted one that made people happy the second they picked it up.”

– Morwenna Trevorrow (66), quilter in Mousehole, Cornwall, since 1974

What arrives at your door

1 Quilted Christmas Tote

In the design you choose – cardinal, Santa, snowman, Christmas village, winter pines, snowman family or dachshund.

Two padded handles

Quilted handles sewn in with a box-and-cross stitch, long enough to carry by hand or over the forearm.

A roomy, lined interior

Flat bottom and side gusset, so the tote stands on its own – about 40 cm wide and 43 cm tall to the top of the handles.

90-day returns

If it doesn’t win you over, send it back within 90 days and get your money back.

Made by hand in Mousehole

Morwenna Trevorrow learned to sew at fourteen, making plain cotton bags with her mother for the chapel Christmas fair. Fifty-two years and more than 18,000 bags later, she still sits down every morning at the 1981 sewing machine her mother gave her as a wedding present – in the whitewashed net loft above the harbour in Mousehole, Cornwall.

The Christmas Tote is the bag people kept coming back for. Women posted her photos of it at Paddington station, on church pews and under Christmas trees from Penzance to Edinburgh. Her grandson Jory nicknamed them “Nan’s sleigh bags”, because every Christmas Eve he watched her load the car with them, full of presents for the whole family.

This winter, Morwenna is closing her net loft. Her right thumb locks after a few hours at the machine, and there is no one to take over. About 640 finished totes remain from her final run. Her grandchildren Tamsin and Jory are selling them here – and when they are gone, there will be no more.

Six things a printed look-alike doesn’t have

No. 01

Three real layers

Outer fabric, a soft layer of wadding and an inner lining – quilted together, not glued or laminated.

No. 02

Stitched all the way through

Every quilting line goes through all three layers, so the bag stands up on its own and keeps its shape packed full.

No. 03

A picture you can feel

Every line of the scene is traced with stitches, so Santa’s beard and the snowman’s scarf rise up off the fabric.

No. 04

Handles sewn in twice

A box-and-cross stitch where the handles meet the bag – exactly where cheap totes tear first.

No. 05

Room for Christmas

Wrapped presents, a casserole dish, two biscuit tins or a laptop and a book – with space to spare.

No. 06

Made one at a time

Cut, layered, quilted and checked by Morwenna herself. No two come out exactly alike.

Morwenna’s tote vs. a printed look-alike

Choose your Christmas design

CardinalA red cardinal on a snowy branch with frosted evergreens and winter berries, in ivory and silver-grey.
SantaA jolly Father Christmas beside a decorated tree, with poinsettias, presents and red quilted sides.
SnowmanA top-hatted snowman in a red scarf, a little tree and wrapped presents on cream quilting.
Christmas VillageA tall tree in the square, a red-brick church, lit windows and a lamppost with a bow.
Winter PinesSnowy firs across grey, cream and deep-green patchwork panels with a pinecone border.
Snowman FamilyThree cheerful snowmen in knitted hats with a log cabin, in icy blue and white.
DachshundA leaping dachshund in a Nordic scarf, framed by holly panels and a poinsettia border.

The Christmas Tote in three steps

1

Fill it

Presents, biscuit tins, the bring-and-share dish – the flat bottom keeps everything upright.

2

Carry it

By hand or over your arm on the padded handles, to church, the Christmas market or Nan’s door.

3

Keep it out

Hang it by the door. Most customers use it far beyond December.

What a quilter sees in it

MF

“Turn a bag inside out and you learn everything. On Morwenna’s totes the stitching goes through every layer and the wadding is even from corner to corner – that’s what keeps a quilted bag from sagging. Printed ‘quilted’ bags fail the moment you run a finger over them. This is the real thing.”

Rosalind Kitto, quilt historian and guild tutor, Truro, Cornwall

Quality you can check yourself

  • The fingertip test: stroke your fingertips across the front – you should feel soft padding under raised quilting, not a flat sheet.
  • The stitch test: run your fingertips over the picture – the lines are real thread and slightly raised.
  • The stand test: set it down with something inside – it stays upright instead of folding over.
  • The handle test: look where the handles meet the bag – a box-and-cross stitch holds each one.
  • The inside test: turn it inside out – a full lining covers the wadding, no loose fluff.

Morwenna’s 90-day money-back guarantee

“These bags should only go home with people who’ll really love carrying them.” Take your Christmas Tote home, fill it, carry it to church and to Nan’s. If you don’t love it, send it back within 90 days and get your money back. No questions asked.

Dispatched within 1–2 working days · Final collection, no reorders

A note on care and size

Each tote is quilted by hand, so the stitching and the placement of the picture can vary slightly from bag to bag – that is part of what makes it yours. To keep it looking its best, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it air dry. Measurements are approximate and taken flat: about 40 centimetres wide and 43 centimetres tall to the top of the handles.

The Last Firing

Some things are made by one pair of hands, for decades, and then never again.

The Final Series is the last work of craftspeople who are putting down their tools. No factory, no successor, no second batch.

Just the final pieces from their workshops, each one shaped by a lifetime of getting it right.

When they're gone, they're gone.

What people say about Morwenna’s Christmas Totes

Customer photo of a quilted Christmas tote

I'd been eyeing these for weeks and finally treated myself to the Santa one. It's lovely and thick, proper quilting you can feel, not a print. It's been hanging on the kitchen door since it came and I grab it every time I pop to the shops.

Got the snowman family one for carting presents round to my mum's. Two kids, a bag stuffed with gifts and it still kept its shape the whole way. The colours are exactly like the photos, if anything nicer in person.

Of course I had to have the dachshund. Our Bramble sat and stared at it for ages. The little dog is stitched so neatly. Good size as well, my knitting and a flask go in with room to spare.

Filled it with presents for the drive to my sister's and it stood up in the boot the whole way, didn't tip once. The handles are padded and sewn on properly, so they don't dig in when it's heavy.

Two tins of biscuits and the Christmas cake for my sister in law's, and this holds the lot. Already spilt a bit of tea on it and it came off with a damp cloth. Worth every penny.

It lives at the bottom of the stairs now and comes out with me most days. I wasn't sure about the price at first, but you can see the hours that have gone into it. Mine came really well packed too.

How is it made?

Morwenna cuts, layers and quilts every tote herself on her 1981 sewing machine in the old net loft above the harbour in Mousehole, Cornwall. Three layers — outer fabric, wadding and lining — are stitched together all the way through, every line of the Christmas scene is traced with quilting, and the padded handles are sewn in with a box-and-cross stitch.
