Nell's Hand-Tufted Pumpkin Cushion Cover
Hand-Tufted in a Vermont Barn
Made by Eleanor “Nell” Prescott, 71 · Brandon, Vermont · final autumn collection before her workshop is demolished
“There’s nothing wrong with my hands. There’s a wrecking permit on my door. Every last cover gets one more real fall on a real couch before this room comes down.”
— Nell Prescott, in The Maker’s Journal
Why it feels different in your hand
The pumpkin is punch-needle worked, not printed — hundreds of raised loops build a full-relief, plush pumpkin you can run your palm over.
A real length of natural jute rope, coiled and hand-stitched down so the stem stands proud of the fabric.
A heavy natural-fiber ground cloth that feels like a grain sack, not a party balloon. Nothing to crack at the fold.
Cover-only build. It slips over a throw pillow you already own, comes off for a spot-clean, and stores flat out of season.
A true 18-inch (45 cm) square, cut to the insert every couch already has.
Every cover cut, tufted, and finished by hand in Vermont — part of the last batch Nell will ever make.
“You can tell a tufted piece from a printed one across a room. Printed fall decor is a graphic; a hand-tufted cover is a texture — and texture is what actually makes a room feel like the season. Finding someone still doing full-relief punch work by hand, at this price, is genuinely rare now.”
— Diane Foss, interior stylist specializing in seasonal interiors

The Last Autumn
The Last Autumn
A note from the barn:
Nell Prescott has tufted autumn pumpkins at the same north window in Brandon, Vermont since 1984 — more than 20,000 of them, every one punched loop by loop into burlap with a coiled jute rope stem stitched down by hand. The old mill row was sold to an out-of-state development group and comes down over the winter; her keys are due back before the first snow. A tufted pumpkin is an autumn object, so this fall is the last one she gets to make. When these are gone, there is no next batch and no next season.

What people say about Nell’s pumpkins
I have bought the cheap printed ones for years and thrown them out every January. This one actually stands up off the pillow — my whole family kept touching it at Thanksgiving.

It went straight out to the porch chair and it has not moved since. Every neighbor who walks past asks where it came from. I tell them about Nell and the barn.

Sandra L., Columbus, OH
Slipped right over a pillow I already owned, zipped up clean, looked perfect. Heavy fabric, no weird smell. This is my reading corner from October on.

Beth A., Concord, NH
I could not choose, so I got the orange and the cream. Together on the bed they look like something out of a magazine, and they cost less than one from the home store.

Denise F., Ann Arbor, MI
The cat claimed it within an hour, which is the highest review anything in this house ever gets. Nice to know it was made about forty minutes up the road.

Marcy W., Rutland, VT
The tufting has real depth to it — you can see the loops catch the light. It warms up the whole sunroom, and the rope stem is such a lovely detail up close.

Joanne P., Asheville, NC
Put it on the entry bench the first cold morning and the house instantly felt like fall. I ordered a second one for my sister before they run out.
