Norbert’s Nutcracker Candle Holder

Turned, carved and finished entirely by hand from solid red pine, the windbreak his father planted in 1947. A real candle holder, and a piece you keep for good.

“When this pine is gone, the lathe gets a cover.”

The story

The last of his father’s pines

Walter Lindemann came home from the Army in 1946 with a painted wooden soldier in his duffel bag. The next spring he planted a row of red pines along the north edge of the farm outside New Ulm.

When the soldier broke in 1976, his son Norbert turned him a new one, and has turned at least one every winter since. In July 2024 a storm brought the whole windbreak down. These nutcrackers are turned from the last of those trunks. There won’t be more.

Start to finish

Every step, by one pair of hands

  1. I

    Turned

Head, body, legs and hat turned from blocks of red pine on his old lathe.

  2. II

    Carved

Crown points, jaw and joints shaped by hand with knife and gouge.

  3. III

    Painted or stained

Every brush stroke on the soldier, every coat of stain on the king.

  4. IV

    Checked and wrapped

Sanded smooth, checked for cracks, wrapped in tissue at his kitchen table.

Pick one up and you feel it: light, warm, smooth wood. Nothing cold, nothing hollow, nothing plastic.

Two nutcrackers, one pair of hands

Painted · 10 in

The Painted Soldier

The one his father carried home: red coat, green trousers, a gold crown with small red jewels and a JOY sign in his hand.

  • Hand-painted in red, green, black and gold
  • Soft white beard and hair
  • Candle stands in the open top of his hat
Natural · 15 in

The Natural Pine King

The same turning without paint. A deep walnut stain lets the grain of the pine show through.

  • Walnut-stained red pine, satin finish
  • Jointed arms, square stepped base
  • Candle stands in a brass cup in his hand
Why it matters

Turned, not cast

i.

Solid wood, made by hand

Head, body, legs and hat are each turned and carved from pine and fitted together by hand. No resin, no mold, no seam down the side.

ii.

A candle that stands straight

Made to hold a standard 7/8-inch taper upright, so the wax stays off the coat and off your tablecloth.

iii.

Feels like an heirloom

Warm and smooth in the hand, satin finish, no sharp edges. Grain and brush strokes differ from piece to piece.

iv.

Made to last

If it ever gets knocked off the mantel, wood can be glued. Resin can’t.

“You can feel the turning rings under the paint, and the candle cup is actually deep enough to use. That’s the old way of making them.”

Candles and care

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from curtains, greenery and the painted soldier’s beard. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, no water or polish. Because each piece is turned by hand, sizes can vary slightly.

The 1947 Windbreak

A note from Norbert:

My dad came home from the Army in 1946 with a painted wooden soldier in his duffel bag, and the next spring he planted a row of red pines along the north edge of our farm outside New Ulm. When the soldier broke in 1976, I turned him a new one, and I have turned at least one every winter since.

A storm took the whole windbreak down in July 2024. These nutcrackers are turned from the last of those trunks. When they are gone, the lathe gets a cover over it.

What Norbert's customers are saying

Customer unpacking the painted nutcracker on her sofa

Opened the box on the couch and said oh out loud. The painted one is real wood, light and warm in your hands, not that cold heavy resin our old store one was made of. He went straight on the mantel and the grandkids have been moving him around the living room all week. Not a chip on him.

Natural pine nutcracker with a lit candle on a fireplace mantel

Ordered the natural pine one for myself. You can see the grain right through the stain and the brass cup is solid. No candle in the box, which they say up front. A regular taper from the drugstore stands dead straight in it.

Customer setting the natural pine nutcracker on his hall table

Got the natural one for the front hall. My husband did woodwork for forty years and the first thing he did was turn it over and look at the grain. He said that's turned on a lathe, not glued together out of a kit. It's taller than I pictured, which I like, and it goes with everything.

Both nutcrackers unpacked on a kitchen table

Bought both for our two daughters so they'd each have one when they have their own homes. They came wrapped in tissue, not a chip or a scratch. The painted one is smaller than the natural one, and the sizes are right in the description.

Collector holding the painted nutcracker in her dining room

I collect nutcrackers and most new ones are resin now. This one is light and warm in the hand and you can feel the turning rings under the paint. The beard is soft and the little red jewels on the crown are a nice touch.

Painted nutcracker with a lit candle on a Christmas Eve dinner table

Shipped in two days and packed carefully. We lit the candle in it for Christmas Eve dinner and the whole table went quiet for a second. Ordering another one for my sister before they're gone.

How are your products made?

Every nutcracker is turned by hand on the lathe from solid red pine, the windbreak Norbert's father planted in 1947. Head, body, legs and hat are turned as separate pieces and fitted together. The painted soldier is painted by hand in red, green, black and gold. The natural pine king is stained a deep walnut brown and holds a brass candle cup. Both take a standard 7/8-inch taper candle (not included). Never leave a burning candle unattended.
