Made on the top floor in Winnipeg

Orest Hrynchuk has sewn winter gloves on the same floor of an old Princess Street building in Winnipeg’s Exchange District since 1983. His grandfather took the floor in 1952, in a district that once dressed half of Western Canada. This pair started with a letter carrier whose wrists froze every time he reached into a mailbox — so Orest closed the cuff.

The building has been sold and the floor closes on November 30. These are the last 3,700 pairs he will make. Whatever is left keeps shipping until the shelf is empty.

— Orest

“Everybody thinks cold hands means you need a thicker glove. My grandfather used to say: keep the wrist warm and the fingers take care of themselves. So we close the cuff. Windproof outside, fleece inside, and a zip that seals the wrist. That’s the whole secret, and it’s the part everybody else leaves out.”

— Orest Hrynchuk, glove maker since 1983

What arrives at your door

  • 1 pair of gloves (left and right) in the colour you choose
  • A handwritten card from Tanya
  • Pulled onto Orest’s own hand and checked before it is boxed

Why your hands stay warm in them

No. 01

The Storm Cuff

A zip closes the cuff snug around your wrist. No gap for the wind, and no bellows effect pumping the warm air out every time you move your hand.

No. 02

Windproof, water-repellent shell

Wind is what makes hands cold. It stops at the outer layer, and light snow and drizzle bead off.

No. 03

Brushed fleece lining

Soft on the skin, holds a layer of warm air and breathes, so your hands don’t go clammy and cold.

No. 04

Warm without the bulk

Pre-curved fingers and no stiff padding. Keys, zippers, a leash clip or a car-seat buckle, without taking them off.

No. 05

Touchscreen & grip

Thumb and index finger work on your phone. The palm grips the steering wheel, the shovel and the leash.

No. 06

Easy on, easy off

Open the zip and the cuff opens wide, so the glove slides on even with cold, stiff fingers. Close it and it stays put.

An ordinary winter glove or Orest’s?

Ordinary glove Orest’s glove
Loose knit or elastic band that gaps when you reach Zip Storm Cuff, snug around the wrist
Knit lets the wind straight through Windproof softshell outer
Thin lining, or none at all Brushed fleece that holds warm air
Thick padding and clumsy fingers Slim, pre-curved fingers
Glove off to answer the phone Touchscreen thumb and index finger
Smooth palm that slides on the wheel Grip pattern across the palm
Off a factory line, nobody checks the fit Pulled onto Orest’s own hand before it is boxed

Pick your colour

Sport Black

The Sport Cut: panelled palm, extra stitching where a glove wears first, and a clip loop at the cuff.

Sky Blue

Bright and easy to spot in the snow. Grip pattern across the whole palm. Tanya’s own pair.

Rose Pink

A pink you can see from the street. Grip pattern across the whole palm. The pair the rural route carrier’s granddaughter walked off with.

Ask Orest — from the cutting table

“Will they fit me?”

They’re one size and they fit most adult hands, wrists from about 7 to 9½ inches (18 to 24 cm). The zip pulls the cuff in to yours. If your hands are very small, the fingertips will have a little room. If they’re wrong, send them back.

“Can I drive in them?”

Yes. The palm grips the wheel instead of sliding, and the fingers are slim enough for the turn signal and the radio.

“Are they thick?”

No, and that’s the point. You don’t need bulk when the wind can’t get in and the cuff is closed. You need to be able to use your hands.

Before you decide

  • 60% off: C$49 instead of C$122, only while this final run lasts
  • Ships within 1–2 business days
  • The floor closes on November 30; whatever is left keeps shipping until it is gone
  • No restock. When the count hits zero, there is no new bolt coming behind it

Ninety days to change your mind

Every pair ships with a 90-day money-back guarantee. If they’re wrong for you, just email info@cedarandtinco.com and we’ll make it right.

Good to know: Close the zip after the glove is on, not before. Hand wash cool, close the zip first, and let them air dry away from the radiator. The touchscreen tips work on most phones and tablets.

The Final Sale

A note from the Princess Street floor:

Orest Hrynchuk has made winter gloves on the top floor of the old garment building on Princess Street in Winnipeg since 1983 — the same floor his grandfather took in 1952. The building has been sold and is being turned into condos, and Orest has to be out by November 30. His hands are not up to starting over somewhere new. These 3,700 pairs are the last ones he will ever make. After November 30 they ship from his daughter Tanya’s garage until the shelf is empty.

When they’re gone, they’re gone.

What Orest’s customers are saying

Customer selfie wearing the rose-pink gloves

Bought the pink pair for walking to the bus in January and they’ve been great so far at minus 25. The colour is exactly like the pictures, nice and bright. The zip cuff tucks under my parka sleeve so the wind doesn’t get up my wrist.

Customer selfie wearing the sky-blue gloves

My steering wheel is like a block of ice until the car warms up. These grip the wheel and they’re not so bulky that I can’t feel what I’m doing. I can even change the radio on the touchscreen without taking them off.

Customer selfie wearing the black Sport gloves while walking the dog

Our husky pulls hard on the river trail so I need a real grip on the leash. The palm doesn’t slip even with snow on it. I was worried black would show every dog hair but it brushes right off.

Rose-pink gloves just unboxed with a handwritten card

Came packed nicely in tissue with a handwritten note, which you don’t see much anymore. The material feels sturdier than I expected and the stitching is neat. Really happy with them for the price.

Black Sport gloves clipped to a winter coat

I’m forever leaving gloves at church or in the car. The little clip on the cuff hooks right onto my parka zipper so they come home with me. One size fits my hands and my son’s, which surprised me.

Sky-blue gloves after clearing snow

Cleared the driveway after the big snowfall last week and my hands stayed dry inside the whole time. I didn’t think a touchscreen glove would hold up to a Manitoba winter. The fleece lining is soft and they’re warmer than they look.
