What arrives at your door

  • One hand-carved serving tray in the shape you choose: Highland Cow, Eagle, Trout, Bass or Bulldog
  • Already oiled with food-safe mineral oil, ready to use
  • Wrapped and ready to give as a gift

Five animals, five stories

Orrin carves the same five animals he has carved for forty years. Every one of them is something off the ridge above Kane.

11.5 × 8.1 in

29 × 21 cm

Highland Cow

The first tray he ever made, in 1988, for his mother. His father kept two shaggy Highland cows behind the barn. Six compartments, the most room of all five.

Best for: cheese boards, holiday spreads

11 × 11 in

28 × 28 cm

Eagle

For the pair of bald eagles that have nested above the Kinzua for as long as he can remember. Wings spread, feathers cut one by one.

Best for: game day, a statement on the coffee table

11 × 7.5 in

28 × 19 cm

Bass

For the creek at the bottom of the woodlot. A wide, smooth body with three deep compartments.

Best for: fruit, after-school snacks, sides

11 × 5.1 in

28 × 13 cm

Trout

The slim one, also from the creek. Narrow enough to sit between the plates on a full table.

Best for: olives, pickles, a dresser catch-all

8.7 × 8.7 in

22 × 22 cm

Bulldog

For Moose, who slept under his bench for eleven years. The smallest of the five, and the one grandkids fight over.

Best for: kids’ snacks, keys and reading glasses

Why it is different

NO. 01

Rescued, not felled

Every tray comes from black cherry that came down on its own in McKean County: storms, ice, lightning, old age.

NO. 02

Carved, not pressed

Each compartment is cut out of the block by hand. Nothing glued on, nothing pressed out of a mold.

NO. 03

No lacquer to peel

Oiled, never sprayed. There is no shiny coat to go cloudy, lift and end up in your food.

NO. 04

Dried slowly, then rested

Months of air drying, a kiln, then rest again before the first cut. That is what keeps cracks out of the compartments.

NO. 05

Darkens with the years

Cherry deepens from warm amber to rich red-brown in its first year in the light.

NO. 06

No two alike

Every tray comes from a different trunk, so color, weight and grain vary. Yours is the only one.

Why most wooden serving trays don’t last

01 · The lacquer

The usual tray

A sprayed-on shine that looks rich in a photo. Olive oil, lemon, a warm dish and a few trips to the sink, and it goes milky, lifts at the edges and flakes into the food.

Orrin’s tray

Oiled, never sprayed. There is no coat on it, so there is nothing to cloud over, peel or end up on your cheese.

02 · Wood dried too fast

The usual tray

Looks perfect the day it arrives. A few weeks later a hairline crack runs straight across a compartment, for no reason you can see.

Orrin’s tray

Black cherry air-dried for months, finished in a small kiln, then rested again before the first cut. One tray in five is thrown out along the way.

03 · The plastic platter

The usual tray

Hot, sour food on melamine: wings, meatballs, warm dips, tomato sauce. In a 2013 study, people passed about six times as much melamine after hot soup from melamine bowls as from ceramic ones.

Orrin’s tray

One solid block of black cherry. Nothing plastic, nothing glued, nothing printed. Wood gives up nothing you would mind eating.

From someone who grades cherry for a living

“Storm-damaged cherry is cracked, twisted and full of tension. Mills won’t touch it, and most of it gets chipped or burned. Getting a sound serving tray out of a log like that means drying it slow and throwing a lot away. That is the part nobody does anymore.”

— Dale Hostetler, hardwood log grader, Warren County, PA

From a burn pile to your table

1931

His grandfather buys the woodlot south of Kane, in the heart of Pennsylvania’s black cherry country.

May 31, 1985

A tornado comes across the ridge. The mills take the straight logs; everything twisted or split goes on burn piles all winter.

Spring 1986

Orrin, 27, pulls one cherry trunk off a pile and takes it home on a borrowed trailer.

1988

The first tray, a Highland cow for his mother. It is still on her counter in Warren, used every day.

Last year

The state takes the woodlot for a highway bypass. A log broker gets the timber rights and asks $1,800 for a single split log.

November 30

The last wood in the barn is the last he will ever get. The shop closes; what is left ships from his niece Britta’s house until the shelf is empty.

Things you can check yourself

  1. Run a thumb inside a compartment. You will feel faint, smooth ripples where the gouge went. A machine-cut tray is router-flat.
  2. Turn it over. No glue line, no joints, no stamped logo. One block of wood, edge to edge.
  3. Tip it toward the window. A soft satin glow, not a plastic shine. That is oil in the wood, not a coat on top of it.
  4. Follow the grain. It bends around the head and the legs, because each animal was laid out on the trunk before the first cut.

“I’ll tell you plainly: this is a serving tray, not a cutting board. Keep the knife on a board and the tray on the table, and it’ll be on that table long after I’m gone.”

  • 90 days to send it back, for any reason or none

90 days, no questions

Fill it, serve on it, put it in front of the whole family. If it is not right, the size, the color, the grain or no reason at all, send it back within 90 days for your money back. No restocking fee.

Care: Hand wash with warm water and a little soap, dry right away. No dishwasher, no soaking. Rub in a few drops of food-safe mineral oil once a month and it will outlast you.

Good to know: Every tray is cut from a different trunk, so color and grain vary from the photos. Small knots and dark streaks are part of the wood, not flaws.

The Final Sale

A note from the barn in Kane:

Orrin Lindquist has carved serving trays from storm-felled black cherry in a pole barn outside Kane, Pennsylvania since 1986. Last year the state took his family’s woodlot for a highway bypass, and the timber rights went to a log broker who now sells every downed cherry for veneer prices. The wood drying in his barn is the last he will ever get, and his hands are telling him it is time. Orrin closes the shop on November 30. Whatever is left after that ships from his niece Britta’s house until the shelf is empty.

When they’re gone, they’re gone.

What Orrin’s customers are saying

Customer selfie with the Highland Cow serving tray filled with cheese

Got the Highland Cow for our anniversary party and it was the first thing everybody asked about. The wood is so rich in person, way darker and prettier than the photos. Held cheese, grapes, salami and crackers with room to spare.

Customer selfie with the Eagle serving tray full of snacks on game day

Bought the eagle for my husband, he’s a retired Marine. It sits on the coffee table every Sunday with his pretzels and peanuts for the game. Solid, heavy and smooth, nothing cheap about it.

Linda R., Knoxville, TN

Bass serving tray with deviled eggs and pickles on a holiday buffet

My old bamboo platter split down the middle after one summer. The bass held the deviled eggs, pickles and olives all through Thanksgiving and it still looks brand new after a hand wash. You can feel it was carved by a person.

Ron K., Wausau, WI

Customer selfie holding up the Bulldog serving tray

The bulldog tray is my favorite thing in the kitchen. We had an English bulldog for twelve years, so this one made me tear up a little. The grandkids get their apple slices and crackers in it every afternoon.

Trout serving tray used as a catch-all on a dresser

Ordered the trout for my dad who fly fishes every weekend. He keeps his reading glasses, wallet and keys in it on the dresser now. Came wrapped beautifully and already oiled.

Kevin M., Bozeman, MT

Highland Cow serving tray freshly unwrapped next to a gift

I own a lot of wooden boards and this is the nicest one by far. No shiny coating, just warm, oiled wood, and the color keeps getting deeper. Ordered a second one as a Christmas gift for my sister.
