Orval's Main Street Wooden Birdhouse
Four little Main Street birdhouses. One Kansas carpenter. The last 73.
Orval Kittredge, seventy-seven, built each design after a real building in his life in Council Grove, Kansas. His eyes can no longer follow the fine cuts, so these are the last houses he will make.
Four designs, four different woods and finishes. Orval matched each one to the birds and the season it was built for.
“In 2009 they tore down my grandfather’s feed store. I saved a stack of its boards and built a birdhouse that looked just like it. A pair of wrens moved in that May. I’ve been building them a town ever since.”
— Orval Kittredge, carpenter, Council Grove, Kansas
“Most cheap birdhouses fail on the basics: thin walls, no roof overhang, nowhere to land. A real-wood house with a deep roofline and a wide front ledge is simply more usable for wrens and chickadees. And fresh water next to seed is one of the best things you can do for cardinals in a dry summer.”
— Dr. Corliss Vandermeer, Ornithologist · Flint Hills Songbird Society
If it isn’t everything you hoped, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com within 90 days is enough. Orval would rather have it back than see it sit in a garage.
These are small houses for small songbirds, about 5 to 9 inches wide. The Supper Table has no hanging cord; it mounts flat against a tree trunk or post, or sits on a deck rail. Natural wood, so grain and color vary a little from piece to piece.

The Last Houses on the Shelf
The Last Houses on the Shelf
A note from the workshop:
Orval Kittredge was a finish carpenter in Council Grove, Kansas, for 41 years. In 2009 the town tore down his grandfather’s old feed store, and he built a birdhouse out of its boards. A pair of wrens moved in that May. Since then he has built more than 2,600 houses in four designs, each one taken from a building in his own life. Two winters ago his right eye began to fail, and he can no longer do the fine cuts on the porches and windows. There are 73 finished houses left on the shelves of his workshop. When they are gone, there will not be more.

What Orval’s customers are saying
I am so happy with June’s Cottage. It is real wood and feels solid in your hands, nothing flimsy about it. Hung it in the maple out back on Saturday and a chickadee was already peeking in by Monday. Every time I look out the kitchen window it makes me smile.

Hung it from the old elm by the garden and within two weeks a pair of Carolina wrens moved in. They have been singing about it ever since and we love it. We had three hard rains and the inside stayed bone dry under that porch roof. Already thinking about getting the Christmas House too.

Bought the Christmas House for my porch and ended up ordering two more for my granddaughters. The colors are just like the pictures and the little tree is on there good and solid. It came wrapped like a present. My pair of cardinals found it the first week.

This is the view from my kitchen sink now. The cardinals come every single morning and the steel cups pull right out so I can rinse and refill them. It sits right on the deck rail outside my window and has not budged once. Best money I have spent on the yard.

I ran a lathe for 38 years so I looked it over pretty hard. Square, tight, no glue globs, no staples sticking out. My wife thinks I bought it for the birds but I just liked the porch. It is going on the post by the mailbox.

Got June’s Cottage after reading Orval’s story and I teared up a little. It hangs in our maple where the kids can see it from the trampoline. Chickadees have been visiting all week and the kids have named every single one. It came fast and was packed really well.
