Hank Calloway, 69. Thirty-four years felling old-growth timber, then the mill closed in '09 and he started carving owls to keep his hands busy. Seven years of refining one design later, this is his final batch. The workshop closes for good this spring.

Hank's first owl had a sharp brow and glass eyes. It sat untouched for six weeks. He softened the brow, warmed the eyes, rounded the whole face — and within a season chickadees were moving in within days. Most mass-produced owls are still built to scare birds off.
Grooved Cavity, No Standing Water
Flat molded bowls hold rain, and held rain molds seed. This cavity is cut deep with drainage grooves channeled out by hand — a simple fix nobody making these by the thousand bothers with.
Food-Safe Oil, No Paint or Lacquer
