Stitched by hand in Scone, the horse capital of Australia

Raelene Gosper, 69, has stitched leather since 1973. Since 1995 she has made her little owl bag in the tin shed behind her house. Two of her fingers have curled into her palm, and she can no longer stitch. These are her last 1,126.

“There’s been a powerful owl living in the old red gum by the creek since before I started. I call him the night shift. An owl in a cupboard does nobody any good — I want to see these on shoulders.”

Raelene Gosper · Scone, New South Wales

What makes Raelene’s owl bag special

🪡The Saddle Stitch

Two needles through the same hole, from opposite sides. If one stitch breaks, the rest hold. A machine seam opens like a zip.

🦉The Three-Layer Face

Base, patterned wings and brow are cut and set separately. That is why the owl has a real expression.

☀️The Polished Edge

Every edge sanded, sealed and polished four times. Sweat and dust can’t get in, so it never frays.

👁️The Amber Eyes

Set deep into the leather instead of glued on top, so the owl seems to watch you as you turn it.

📱Small on Purpose

Phone, keys, purse, lipstick, sunnies. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.

👐Hands Free

Worn across the body at hip or waist. Sits flat and doesn’t swing about.

“The saddle stitch is the oldest and strongest seam in leatherwork. It is why a good stock saddle can last a lifetime. Very few people still use it on small bags, because it takes hours instead of minutes. Raelene is one of the last who do.”

Ross Dunstan · Retired saddlery teacher · Upper Hunter, NSW

Why Raelene’s owl lasts

  • Hand-stitched seams. One broken stitch never opens the bag.
  • Sealed edges. No fraying, even after years of heat and dust.
  • Holds its shape. It won’t go floppy after one summer.
  • Gets better with age. The corners soften where your hand rests.
  • Checked one by one. Every owl is looked over in Raelene’s workshop before it leaves.
❤️ 30-day money-back guarantee

If the owl doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. Raelene would rather have it back than have it sit in a cupboard.

Good to know: The owl is small on purpose — about the size of a hardback book. It fits a phone, keys, a slim purse and a lipstick. Every bag is finished by hand, so tiny differences in the beak or claws are normal.

The Last Stitch

A note from the workshop:

Raelene Gosper started stitching saddles in Scone in 1973, aged sixteen. Since 1995 she has made her little owl bag in the tin shed behind her house — more than 8,000 of them, every seam stitched by hand. In the old red gum by the creek lives a powerful owl. She calls him the night shift. Now two of her fingers have curled into her palm and she can no longer stitch, and the workshop closes on 20 December. 1,126 owl bags from her final collection are left. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?

Raelene makes every owl in her workshop in Scone. The face is built from three separate layers, the amber eyes are set into the leather by hand, and every edge is sanded, sealed and polished four times. Every seam is a two-needle saddle stitch, so if one stitch breaks the rest still hold. Small differences from bag to bag are part of the charm.
